Gordon Biersch Brewery is an American brewery founded by Dan Gordon and Dean Biersch. Gordon, a graduate from the five-year brewing engineering program at Weihenstephan, Germany, and Biersch opened their first brewery restaurant in Palo Alto, California, in July 1988. In 1999, the restaurants were sold to what ultimately became CraftWorks Restaurants & Breweries. [1]

In November 1995, the two founders and their original investors, wanting to expand their then $20 million business, accepted a $11.2 million investment from the Fertitta family of Las Vegas. [2] [3] Lorenzo Fertitta became the controlling owner. As of June 2014, Gordon Biersch brews beer for Costco and Trader Joe's under contract. [4] The Gordon Biersch brewery and bottling plant is located in Japantown in San Jose, California. [5] [6] In 2016, Gordon Biersch released a dry-hopped red ale called "Chum" in honor of the San Jose Sharks. [7]

Awards

Gordon Biersch Brewing Company has won several American awards. At the Great American Beer Festival, they won gold in the category of Bohemian-style pilsner in 2004, [8] and in the category of German Style Schwarzbier in 2007, [9] and the Rauchbier brewed at the Gordon Biersch Restaurant in Annapolis, Maryland, won gold in 2014. [10] In 2018, Gordon Biersch at Tysons Corner, by brewer Justin Damadio, won a gold medal in the Bohemian Pilsner category at Great American Beer Festival. [11] At the World Beer Cup 2002, they won gold in the category of sweet stout and bronze in the category of Vienna style lager, [12] and at the World Beer Cup 2006, they won gold in the German style schwarzbier category. The company owned several casual dining restaurant chain brands, including Logan's Roadhouse, Old Chicago, Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurants, and Rock Bottom Restaurants Breweries. As of November 2019, CraftWorks owned and operated over 390 restaurants in the United States, but all of its owned-and-operated locations closed by March 2020, after a Chapter 11 bankruptcy followed immediately by the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, and CraftWorks and terminated its 18,000 employees, leaving fewer than 25 employed. On June 12, 2020, SPB Hospitality purchased Craftworks businesses out of bankruptcy for $93 million.

In 2016, the company was purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev, meaning that Devils Backbone Brewing Company would no longer meet the Brewers Association definition of a "craft brewery", since ownership by Anheuser-Busch InBev exceeds the definition's 25% maximum ownership by a non-craft brewery.

Marble Brewery is a brewery in Albuquerque, New Mexico, founded in 2008. Its main brewhouse is located in downtown Albuquerque on Marble Avenue, which gave the brewery its name. The 30 barrel brewhouse is responsible for brewing all classic and seasonal styles, including Marble's most popular brew, Double White. As of 2018, it was the second largest brewery in New Mexico with an annual production volume of 23,000 US barrels. In 2016, the brewery completed a major expansion which increased the production capacity to 30,000 barrels. Its beers have won several awards and it was named Small Brewery and Brewmaster of the Year at the 2014 Great American Beer Festival.

The Nashville Brewing Company originally operated from 1859 to 1890 in Nashville, Tennessee. It was later renamed the Gerst Brewing Company and operated until 1954. The brewery was revived in 2016 by beer historian Scott R. Mertie, who had written a history of the Nashville brewing industry a decade earlier.
