Gordon Clair Helsel,Jr. (born January 9,1947) is a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates and former mayor of Poquoson,Virginia. He represented the 91st district,which includes Poquoson and part of the neighboring city of Hampton. A retired businessman,Helsel previously served on the city council (1982–1990),as vice mayor (1990–1994),and as mayor (1996–2010) of Poquoson. [1]
While serving as a member of the House of Delegates,Helsel's voting record angered many conservative Republicans,including his vote to expand Medicaid in Virginia, [2] and his vote to defeat the "Tebow Bill". [3] He retired before facing a primary challenger in 2019.
Poquoson,informally known as Bull Island,is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census,the population was 12,460. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Poquoson with surrounding York County for statistical purposes.

Thomas Donald Gear was an American politician of the Republican Party. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2002 until 2010. He represented the 91st district on the Virginia Peninsula,made up of the city of Poquoson plus parts of York County and the city of Hampton. He resigned his seat on December 31,2010 citing health problems.

Elaine Goodman Luria is an American politician and US Navy veteran serving as the U.S. representative from Virginia's 2nd congressional district since 2019. Luria's congressional district includes most of Hampton Roads,including all of Virginia Beach,Williamsburg,and Poquoson and parts of Norfolk and Hampton. Before running for Congress,she served as a naval officer for 20 years. Luria rose to the rank of commander and spent most of her career aboard ship. She defeated Republican incumbent Scott Taylor in 2018 and was reelected in a rematch against Taylor in 2020,before losing her bid for a third term to Republican Jen Kiggans in 2022.

The 2021 Virginia gubernatorial election was held on November 2,2021,to elect the next governor of Virginia. The election was concurrent with other elections for Virginia state offices. Incumbent Democratic Governor Ralph Northam was ineligible to run for reelection,as the Constitution of Virginia prohibits governors from serving consecutive terms. Republican businessman Glenn Youngkin won the party's nomination at the party's May 8 convention,which was held in 37 polling locations across the state,and was officially declared the nominee on May 10. The Democratic Party held its primary election on June 8,which former Governor Terry McAuliffe easily won. In the general election,Youngkin defeated McAuliffe,50.6%-48.6%,to become the 74th Governor of Virginia. Youngkin's win was seen as an upset because McAuliffe led polls until the closing weeks of the campaign. The economy,education,public health,and cultural issues were centerpieces of Youngkin's campaign. Youngkin promised to ban the teaching of critical race theory within state schools on "day one",push back against certain COVID-19 mandates and restrictions,and advocate for small government within the state of Virginia.
