Gordon R. Hall (born 1926) [1] was a justice of the Utah Supreme Court from 1977 to 1993. [2] He served as chief justice from 1981 to 1993,which is longer than any chief justice in Utah history. [2]
Hall practiced law in Tooele,Utah. He was attorney-adviser for the commanding officer at the Tooele Army Depot from 1953 to 1958. At different points in his career,he was town attorney for Wendover and Stockton,and Grantsville city attorney. [3] He was elected three times as Tooele County Attorney. [2]
Hall was appointed to the Third District Court in 1969. [2] Governor Scott M. Matheson appointed him to the Utah Supreme Court in 1977. He became chief justice following the death of his predecessor in that office,Richard Johnson Maughan. [4] During Hall's tenure as Chief Justice,the Utah Constitution was changed to make the judiciary independent. [2] [4] Utah's Judiciary gave him the Distinguished Jurist Award in 1988. [5] He served as President of the Conference of Chief Justices, [1] chairman of the Utah Judicial Council,and chairman of the board of the National Center for State Courts. [5]
In 2007,the new Tooele County Courthouse was named in his honor. When it opened,it was the only Utah courthouse named for a judge. [2]
Byron "Whizzer" Raymond White was an American lawyer and professional football player who was an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1962 to 1993. Born and raised in Colorado,White played college football,basketball,and baseball for the University of Colorado,finishing as the runner up for the Heisman Trophy in 1937 and was a consensus All-American. He was the fourth overall selection of the 1938 NFL Draft,taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates,and led the National Football League in rushing yards in his rookie season. White spent a year at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar,then was admitted to Yale Law School in 1939 and played for the Detroit Lions in the 1940 and 1941 seasons while still attending law school. During World War II,he served as an intelligence officer with the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre. After the war,he graduated from Yale Law ranked first in his class and clerked for Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson.
The chief justice of Canada is the presiding judge of the nine-member Supreme Court of Canada,the highest judicial body in Canada.
