The Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) are a list of 38 academic institutions funded either by the Government of India or the State governments of India that participate in the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) for the admission process into their undergraduate programmes in architecture, planning, sciences, and various branches of engineering and technology.

Process of admission

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is responsible for conducting admission in 38 government funded technical institutes through its website.

The admissions are done on the basis of merit obtained in the Joint Entrance Examination - Main.

The seat allotment is subject to merit whereas seat acceptance is subject to payment of 35,000/- INR for Open and OBC within 2-4 days, and 20,000 INR for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Further seat acceptance does not mean admission, a candidate offered and accepted seat have to personally report to The allotted institute and pay the remaining fees demanded by the respective institute. Joint Entrance Examination – Main (JEE-Main), formerly All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), is an Indian standardised computer-based test for admission to various technical undergraduate programs in engineering, architecture, and planning across colleges in India. The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency for admission to B.Tech, B.Arch, etc. programs in premier technical institutes such as the National Institutes of Technology (NIT) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT), which are based on the rank secured in the JEE-Main. It is usually conducted twice every year. Since mid of 2019, the JEE has been conducted fully online as a computerised test.

In India, Institute of National Importance (INI) is a status that may be conferred on a premier public higher education institution by an act of Parliament of India for such institution which "serves as a pivotal player in developing highly skilled personnel within the specified region of the country/state". Institutes of National Importance receive special recognition, higher autonomy, and funding from the Government of India.

Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) are centrally funded technical institutes located across India. They are a group of 25 interdisciplinary technology-based-engineering research institutions in India which are focused on information technology. Five of them are established, funded and managed by the Ministry of Education (MOE). The other 20 are set up on the public-private partnership (PPP) model, funded by the central government, state governments and industry partners in the ratio 50:35:15.

India has the largest numbers of engineers as well as the largest number of engineering education institutes and infrastructure in the world. As of 2021, India annually produces 1.5 million engineering graduates. India's technical education infrastructure includes 2500 engineering colleges, 1400 polytechnics and 200 schools of planning and architecture.

Indian Institute of Information Technology Kota is one of the Indian Institutes of Information Technology proposed to be located at Ranpur near Kota, Rajasthan. It is spread over 100.37 acres, IIIT Kota is a Joint venture of the Ministry of Education (MoE) Government of India, Government of Rajasthan with Industries in Public-Private Partnership model. First batch of IIIT Kota has graduated in the year 2017. IIITK offers technical courses for CSE and ECE branches, with creative project courses. Every year IIITK celebrates its Foundation Day in April. After the IIIT Act was passed in the Parliament in 2017, IIITK has become an "Institute of National Importance", equalling in status with the NITs and IITs, with power of offering degrees officially.

Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology, Tezpur (GIMT-Tezpur) is a private institute offering degree level technical courses in the State of Assam is a Private college established by Shrimanta Shankar Academy (SSA) Society and Government of Assam, India. The college was established with permission from the state government and approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and is affiliated to Gauhati University (GU), Guwahati, Assam and also to Assam Science and Technology University (ASTU), Guwahati, Assam.

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority, also known as JoSAA, is an agency established by the Ministry of Education formerly known as HRD Ministry to manage and regulate the admission to 110 tertiary institutes administered by the government of India.
