Gregory Jarrett (born December 1952) is an American broadcast journalist who was a longtime news reporter in San Francisco, mostly at KGO (AM). He became the morning drive radio host on WGN (AM) in Chicago in June 2009, a position in which he remained until December 2011.

Professional career

Jarrett was born in San Antonio, Texas; his family moved repeatedly, sending Jarrett to 16 grade schools and 3 high schools. His first radio job was as football play-by-play announcer for KANE (AM) when he was a high school senior in New Iberia, Louisiana. [1]

Jarrett joined KGO-AM in San Francisco in 1986 as an aviation and space reporter. [2] [3] In 1991, Jarrett reported for KGO-AM and KGO-TV from Saudi Arabia during the Persian Gulf War, also filing reports for the ABC Radio Network. [3] In late 1992, Jarrett flew to Somalia to join the mass of media greeting U.S. troops there. [4] In 1993, Jarrett reported from Sarajevo, where mortar fire came through the window of his hotel room while he was elsewhere. [5]

Jarrett left KGO-AM in 1994 to become a staff correspondent at ABC News. [2]

From 1998 to 2000, Jarrett worked at KEWS-AM (now KPOJ) in Portland, Oregon. [2]

Jarrett rejoined KGO in June 2000. [2] [6] In 2003, Jarrett was an embedded journalist assigned to the Purple Foxes (HMM-364) U.S. Marines helicopter squadron in Iraq. [1] [7] Jarrett was laid off from KGO in January 2009. [2] [6] [8] Many of the staff at KGO were laid off by owner Citadel Communications around the same time. [9]

On June 15, 2009, the management of WGN (AM) in Chicago announced that Jarrett would be joining the station on June 22, 2009 as its morning drive host. [2] Jarrett would fill the position previously held by legendary Chicago talkers Wally Phillips, Bob Collins and Spike O'Dell. The most recent WGN personality to hold that slot, John Williams, replaced O'Dell but spent only six months in the slot; he moved to the 9 a.m.–noon slot at the same time Jarrett started as morning host. On December 2, 2011, WGN announced that longtime Chicago radio personality Jonathon Brandmeier would replace Jarrett in the morning time-slot in a shift to a more personality-based program. [11]

KGO operates with 50,000 watts, the highest power permitted AM radio stations by the Federal Communications Commission. But it uses a directional antenna to protect the other Class A station on 810 kHz, WGY in Schenectady, New York. Most nights, using a good radio, KGO can be heard throughout the Western United States east to the Rocky Mountains, and in Northern Mexico, Western Canada and Alaska.

Jim Dunbar was an American radio program director, talk show host and news anchor. Dunbar was associated with KGO Radio in San Francisco for 37 years. According to radio historian Ben Fong-Torres, "He changed the Bay Area radio landscape by helping turn KGO from an also-ran into the greatest powerhouse on the dial, with a 30-year run at the top of the ratings."

Kevin "The Rat" Radich was the weekday afternoon sports reporter on KGO AM 810, in San Francisco. He joined KGO in early 2007, after a year of work as a weekend sports anchor for KCBS 740 AM radio. His wife, Kim Wonderley, works at KCBS as the morning traffic anchor. On June 21, 2015 Ben Fong-Torres' column Radio Waves in the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Radich had been fired by KGO. Radich was honored with an APTRA Mark Twain Award in January 2009. The competition covered California, Nevada, Hawaii, Arizona, New Mexico, Washington, Idaho, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, and Alaska. Judging took place at The Associated Press Bureau in Downtown Los Angeles with a panel of leading broadcast journalists that considered hundreds of entries from the 2008 calendar year.

KSFO is a commercial AM radio station in San Francisco, California. It is owned by Cumulus Media and airs a talk radio format. The station's studios and offices are on Battery Street in the SoMa district of San Francisco, along with five other Bay Area Cumulus stations.

The Marconi Radio Awards are presented annually by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) to the top radio stations and on-air personalities in the United States. He has been a talk show host for several radio stations, and unusual for being a liberal in a genre dominated by conservatives. He also hosted a program on food and wine. From 2005 to 2009, he hosted The Peter B. Collins Show, a syndicated, progressive, radio talk show based at KRXA in Monterey, California. From 2009 to 2020 he produced his show on the internet, via listener-supported podcasts. Occasionally, Collins substitute hosted on KGO-AM in San Francisco. He retired at the end of 2020.

William (Spike) O'Dell a native of East Moline, Illinois, is an American former radio host for WGN Radio in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He joined WGN in 1987 and hosted the afternoon show until 2000, when he took over for the late Bob Collins in the morning slot from 5 to 9 a.m. During the time O'Dell held that slot, his show was consistently the top rated morning show in the Chicago market. O'Dell's tenure with WGN concluded on December 12, 2008 with his final broadcast from the Metropolis Theatre in Arlington Heights, Illinois. The broadcast was part of the WGN HomeTown Voices series, which was originated by O'Dell.

Lloyd Lindsay Young, known as "Double L" is an American weather reporter who gained notoriety for his over-the-top delivery and antics. He is the father of former KGET-TV weatherman George Lindsay Young, with whom he worked for several years in New York.

Gil Gross is an American radio personality. He most recently hosted a weekday radio talkshow on KKSF Talk 910 in Oakland/San Francisco from 10am to 2pm, as well as the syndicated Real Estate Today program on Saturdays. However, that station flipped formats to Spanish language sports on July 23, 2016. He was a news correspondent for the ABC Radio Networks. From 2007 to late 2011 he hosted a show on KGO AM in San Francisco, California, on weekday afternoons. He replaced the San Francisco newscaster Pete Wilson after his death in 2007 as host of the radio show on KGO.

Dennis Willis is an American film critic, radio and television personality, and writer, director and producer of short independent films. He hosts the weekly program Flick Nation Radio, and his At the Movies and Home Media Guide features can be heard on KGO AM in San Francisco. Willis' reviews, features and comments have also been heard on KKSF Newstalk 910, WGN (Chicago), and WNSW and WZHF on the Voice of Russia network. He is the author of the annual Flick Nation Movie Guide and American Popcorn: Hollywood and the War on Common Sense; and is a member of the San Francisco Film Critics Circle and the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
