The Professor of Divinity at Gresham College, London, gives free educational lectures to the general public. The college was founded for this purpose in 1597, when it created seven professorships; this was later increased to ten. Divinity is one of the original professorships as set out by the will of Thomas Gresham in 1575. [1]

Gresham College is an institution of higher learning located at Barnard's Inn Hall off Holborn in Central London, England. It does not accept students or award degrees. It was founded in 1597 under the will of Sir Thomas Gresham, and hosts over 140 free public lectures every year. Since 2001, all lectures have also been made available online. The current Provost is Professor Martin Elliott.

Professors of Physic and more recently visiting Professors have been giving public lectures on major topics in medicine in London since 1597; recently these have also been put on line as a free resource for a wider public including outside the UK. Gresham Professors have included some of the leading scientists in Britain including Sir Christopher Wren and Robert Boyle. Gresham Professors of Physic listed below included leaders in medicine, public health, surgery and clinical science. In addition eminent medical scientists and physicians were Gresham Professors of other disciplines, such as Sir William Petty, one of the founders of demography.

Dr Samuel Brooke (1575–1631) was a Gresham Professor of Divinity, a playwright, the chaplain of Trinity College, Cambridge and subsequently the Master of Trinity (1629–1631). He was known to be an Arminian and anti-Calvinist. In 1631 he was appointed archdeacon of Coventry.
