Grinnell Mutual is a property-casualty mutual insurance company and reinsurer based in Grinnell, Iowa, United States.
Grinnell Mutual is the 110th largest property-casualty insurance company in the U.S. Its products are available in 17 states. Grinnell Mutual is the largest direct reinsurer of farm mutual companies in North America. With its member mutuals, it has over $210 billion of total reinsured value.[ citation needed ]

In 1909, the company was formed in Greenfield, Iowa as "Iowa Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Association" by John Evans to provide reinsurance for county mutuals in Iowa. [2] In 1933, the company moved to Grinnell, Iowa, and changed its name to "Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Association". [3] The name changed again in 1948 to "Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Company". The current legal name, "Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company," was adopted in 1963. [4] The company adopted the “Grinnell Mutual” and “Grinnell Re" brands in 2017.
In 2014, Grinnell Mutual was one of first six companies investing in the Global Insurance Accelerator, [5] [6] the first startup accelerator for insurtech.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Grinnell Mutual announced the Trust in Tomorrow Premium Payback. [7] This was one of a series of actions in March–May 2020 to assist policyholders affected by the pandemic, including moratoriums on policy cancellations and other actions to help both auto and commercial policyholders through this unsettled time. The Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Company Building is a historic structure located in Grinnell, Iowa, United States. "The Iowa Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Association was the first statewide organization of its kind in the United States." When it moved to Grinnell from Jefferson, Iowa in 1934 its name was changed to Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Company. It was still a relatively small operation at the time that required only simple rented upstairs quarters. The present building was first occupied in 1951, but only the first two floors were built. The top two floors were completed in 1957, and gave the building its present form. The company rented out the first floor to other commercial businesses. Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Company moved out of building in 1962 to a larger complex south of Grinnell, and at that time became known as the Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company. This building was sold to the General Telephone Company, which occupied the whole building until 1968. The Trustees of Iowa (Grinnell) College, GTE Data of Iowa, and DeLong's Sportswear have all subsequently owned the building.
