Gwyneth Denver Davies MBE ,FLSW (born 1959),known professionally as Gwyneth Lewis,is a Welsh poet,who was the inaugural National Poet of Wales in 2005. She wrote the text that appears over the Wales Millennium Centre.
Gwyneth Lewis was born into a Welsh-speaking family in Cardiff. Her father started teaching her English when her mother went into hospital to give birth to her sister. [1]
Lewis attended Ysgol Gyfun Rhydfelen,a bilingual school near Pontypridd,and then studied at Girton College,Cambridge,University of Cambridge,where she was a member of Cymdeithas Y Mabinogi. She was awarded a double first in English literature and the Laurie Hart Prize for outstanding intellectual work. Lewis then studied creative writing at Columbia and Harvard,before receiving a D.Phil. in English from Balliol College,Oxford,for a thesis on 18th-century literary forgery featuring the work of Iolo Morganwg. Lewis was made a Harkness Fellow and worked as a freelance journalist in New York for three years. She then returned to Cardiff as a documentary producer and director at BBC Wales. [2] She left the BBC in 2001 after receiving a £75,000 grant from the National Endowment for Science,Technology and the Arts to carry out research and sail to ports linked historically with the inhabitants of her native Cardiff.
Lewis later wrote the words which appear over the Wales Millennium Centre,which opened in November 2004. The same words form the title of Karl Jenkins's cantata In These Stones Horizons Sing ,which is partly set to lyrics by Gwyneth Lewis. In 2005 she was elected Honorary Fellow of Cardiff University. The same year she was made the first National Poet of Wales. [3] [4]
Lewis was a judge for the 2011 Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine. On 6 August 2012,Gwyneth Lewis won Y Goron (the Crown) at the National Eisteddfod at Llandow for a collection of poems on the set title of Ynys (Island).
In 2013,Lewis was elected as a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. [5]
Lewis was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2022 Birthday Honours for services to literature. [6] She returned to Balliol College to serve as Artist in Residence in 2023 and again in 2024. [7]
Lewis entered the world of music in partnership with Richard Chew. Redflight/ Barcud was her first libretto,commissioned and presented by Welsh National Opera with pupils from Ysgol Capel y Cynfab,Cynghordy and Ysgol Cil-y-cwm. The Most Beautiful Man from the Sea is an oratorio for 600 voices,with music by Chew and Orlando Gough. It was given its world première at the Wales Millennium Centre by the Chorus of Welsh National Opera and 500 amateur singers.
Married to Leighton,a former bosun with the Merchant Navy,Lewis has had a well documented battle in the past with clinical depression and alcoholism. [8] [9] Her personal battles inspired her first book,Sunbathing in the Rain:A Cheerful Book on Depression and also a collection of poems,Keeping Mum –Voices from Therapy.
Having agreed to change their lifestyles for their own good,Lewis and her husband bought the small yacht Jameeleh,taught themselves to sail,and set out to cross the Ocean to Africa. The journey inspired her 2005 book Two in a Boat –The True Story of a Marital Rite of Passage. [9]

Urdd Gobaith Cymru is a national voluntary youth organisation, which claimed over 56,000 members in 2019 aged between 8 and 25. It provides opportunities for children and young people across Wales to take part in a range of experiences through the medium of Welsh. The Urdd turned 100 on 25 January 2022 and celebrated by breaking two Guinness World Records.
The Wales Book of the Year is a Welsh literary award given annually to the best Welsh and English language works in the fields of fiction and literary criticism by Welsh or Welsh interest authors. Established in 1992, the awards are currently administered by Literature Wales, and supported by the Arts Council of Wales, Welsh Government and the Welsh Books Council.
Literature Wales, formerly named the Academi, is the Welsh national literature promotion agency and society of writers, existing to promote Welsh-language and English-language literature in Wales. It offers bursaries for writing projects, runs literary events and lectures, and provides financial assistance for creative mentoring and other literary-based ventures. The organisation also selects the National Poet for Wales, and manages competitions including Wales Book of the Year, the Cardiff International Poetry Competition, and the Rhys Davies Short Story Competition.
Menna Elfyn, FLSW is a Welsh poet, playwright, columnist, and editor who writes in Welsh. She has been widely commended and translated. She was imprisoned for her campaigning as a Welsh-language activist.
Gwyn Thomas, FLSW was a Welsh poet and academic. He was the second National Poet of Wales, holding the role between 2006 and 2008.

Paul Griffiths is a Welsh writer, theatre critic and director. He won the Drama Medal at the National Urdd Gobaith Cymru Eisteddfod three times in succession between 1995 and 1997 – the only person ever to do this. Between March 2006 and December 2013 he contributed a controversial weekly theatre column to the National Paper of Wales Y Cymro. He is also a regular contributor on the Welsh language Television Channel S4C and BBC Radio Cymru.
Grahame Clive Davies CVO is a poet, author, editor, librettist, literary critic and former journalist. He was brought up in the former coal mining village of Coedpoeth near Wrexham in north east Wales.
Fflur Dafydd is a Welsh novelist, singer-songwriter and musician. Though mainly publishing in Welsh, she also writes in English. She contributes regularly in Welsh to Radio Cymru.
The Urdd National Eisteddfod is an annual Welsh-language youth festival of literature, music and performing arts organised by Urdd Gobaith Cymru. It is the youth counterpart to the National Eisteddfod of Wales. Arguably Europe's largest youth festival, it is usually held during the last week of May, coinciding with schools' half term holiday. Locations alternate between north and south Wales. The Eisteddfod consists of competitive singing, recitation, art, composition, dance and instrumental events for contestants aged between 7 and 24 years. Regional qualifying heats are held in advance around Wales.
Angharad Tomos is a Welsh author and prominent language activist. She is a recipient of the Tir na n-Og Award.
Norah Isaac was a Welsh author, drama producer and campaigner for Welsh-language education. She became head of the country's first Welsh-medium school, Ysgol Gymraeg yr Urdd, in 1939.
Alice Matilda Langland Williams, more commonly known as Alys Mallt and Y Fonesig Mallt, was a Welsh political writer and celtophile. She was born in Brecknockshire to an English-speaking family, but learned the Welsh language when influenced by the circle of Welsh heiress Augusta Hall, Baroness Llanover.
The Urdd Peace and Goodwill Message has been relayed each year without fail since 28 June 1922. It is a message of peace and goodwill from the young people of Wales that is sent to the children and young people of the world on Goodwill Day, which is May 18. The message theme, authorship and broadcast is organised by Urdd Gobaith Cymru which is a Welsh language youth organisation also established in 1922.
Guto Dafydd is a Welsh poet and novelist, who writes in the Welsh language. He has twice won the Crown at the National Eisteddfod of Wales and is twice winner of the Daniel Owen Prize for a novel.
John Berwyn Rowlands is a Welsh creative producer who founded and continues to lead the Iris Prize LGBT+ Film Festival. Previously he was chief executive of Sgrîn, Media Agency of Wales from 1997 to 2006 and director of the Welsh International Film Festival from 1989 to 1997.
Gwenllian Jenkins is a Welsh Rugby Union player who plays prop for the Wales women's national rugby union team and Scarlets. She made her debut for the Wales national squad in 2019, and represented them at the 2021 Women's Six Nations Championship.
Bardd Plant Cymru is the poet laureate of Welsh-language children's literature. It is one of the two national children's literature roles in Wales, alongside the English-language Children's Laureate Wales role. It is run by Literature Wales, and supported by the Welsh Government, S4C, the Welsh Books Council and Urdd Gobaith Cymru.
