HMS Enterprise (sometimes spelled Enterprize) was a 24-gun sixth-rate (named Enterprise [1] or L'Entreprenante [2] ) of the French Navy captured by HMS Triton (also spelt as Tryton [3] ) on 7 May 1705. [4] She was registered as a Royal Navy ship on 1 June 1705 and commissioned shortly afterwards. She served in the Mediterranean and with Admiral Byng's squadron at the Downs. She was wrecked in 1707 with the loss of all hands. [5]

She was the first vessel in the Royal Navy to be named Enterprise. [6]

Specifications

She was captured on 2 May and registered as a Royal Naval vessel on 1 June 1705. Her gundeck was 93 feet 0 inches (28.3 metres) with her keel for tonnage calculation of 79 feet 9 inches (24.3 metres). Her breadth for tonnage was 27 feet 6 inches (8.4 metres). Her tonnage calculation was 320+7594 tons. Her armament was twenty 6-pounders on the upper deck and four 4-pounders on the quarterdeck, all on wooden trucks. [7]

Commissioned service

She was commissioned in 1705 under the command of Commander John Paul, RN for service in the Mediterranean then was assigned to Admiral Byng's squadron for the winter of 1706/07 in the Downs. On 17 May 1707 Commander William Davenport assumed command. [8] [9]

Loss

She was wrecked off Thornton, Lancashire, (near Blackpool) with the loss of all hands on 12 October 1707. [10]

HMS <i>Hampton Court</i> (1678) Ship of the line of the Royal Navy

HMS Hampton Court was a 70-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched at Deptford Dockyard in 1678. Her initial commission was to move her to Chatham where she spent in the next ten years in Ordinary. HMS Burford was a 70-gun third rate ship of the line built at Woolwich Dockyard in 1677/79 as part of the Thirty Ships Programme of 1677. She fought in the War of the English Succession, including the Battle of Barfleur, before being rebuilt at Deptford in 1699, remaining as a 70-gun third rate. During the War of Spanish Succession she was mostly in the Mediterranean fleet and fought at the capture of Gibraltar and the Battle of Málaga in 1704 before being extensively repaired between 1710 and 1712 at Portsmouth Dockyard. Burford served in the Baltic in 1715 and 1717 before returning to the Mediterranean to fight the Spanish at the Battle of Cape Passaro in 1718. She was wrecked on the Italian coast in a storm on 14 February 1719.

HMS <i>Suffolk</i> (1680) Ship of the line of the Royal Navy

HMS Suffolk was a 70-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built by contract of 20 February 1678 by Sir Henry Johnson at Blackwall. She participated in the War of the English Succession 1689 - 1697, in the Battles of Beachy Head and Barfleur. She was rebuilt in 1699. She was actively involved in the War of Spanish Succession 1702 - 1713. Her later career was as guard ship duties, deployments to the Baltic Sea and the West Indies. She was finally broken in 1765 after lying in Ordinary for almost twenty years.

Before 1688 no sixth rate carried more than 20 guns. At the start of the Anglo-French War in 1688 the British captured four 20 plus gunned French vessels, that were rated by the French as sixth rates. The British Admiralty submitted a requirement to the Navy Board for a 'standard' sixth rate of 20 guns on the upper deck with four smaller guns on the quarterdeck. The vessel proposed by the Navy Board had an estimated cost of £1,676.10.0d per ship with another £2,513 for materials for completion. Initially fourteen ships were ordered, Batch 1 of four vessels in July 1693, Batch 2 of eight vessels in spring 1694, Batch 3 of two vessels in March 1695 with a further four in 1696. This first standardized group of sixth rates became known as the Maidstone Group.

HMS Seaford was purchased from Richard Herring of Bursledon. Richard Herring had built this vessel on speculation to a similar specification as the Maidstone Group. After she was commissioned she sailed as part of the expedition to recapture Fort York on Hudson Bay. She was also part of Symond's squadron in the West Indies where she was captured and burnt by the French in 1697.

HMS Sun Prize was a 22-gun sixth rate take by HMS Litchfield on 13 May 1704. She was registered as a Royal Navy Vessel on 1 July 1704. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1704 for service in the English Channel. She was recaptured by a French 36-gun privateer off St Albans Head in 1708.

HMS Medway's Prize was a 28-gun sixth rate take by HMS Medway on 17 August 1704. She was registered as a Royal Navy Vessel on 6 September 1704. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1705 for service in Home Waters then Jamaica. She was sold in late 1713.

HMS Triton's Prize was a 30-gun French privateer, Le Royal of St Malo taken by HMS Triton on 3 February 1705. She was purchased on 3 March 1705. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1705 for service in the English Channel. She went to the American colonies of New York and Virginia, remaining there until sold in 1703.

HMS Fox Prize was a 24-gun French privateer, Le Behringhen taken by HMS Triton on 2 May 1705. She was purchased on 19 May 1705. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1705 for service in Ireland. She was wrecked in Holyhead Bay in 1706.

HMS Dunkirk's Prize was a 26-gun French privateer, Le Hocquart of St Malo taken by HMS Dunkirk in September 1705. She was purchased and registered on 15 November 1705. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1706 for service in the West Indies. She was grounded and lost while chasing a French privateer which also went aground and was captured. She was lost in 1708.

HMS Child's Play was a 24-gun French privateer, Le Jeux of St Malo taken by HMS Tartar on 7 June 1706. She was purchased on 6 July 1706. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy on 10 July 1706 for service in the West Indies. She was wrecked in a hurricane in 1707.

HMS Orford's Prize was a 24-gun French privateer, Le Gaillarde taken by HMS Orford on 2 October 1708. She was purchased and registered on 21 October 1708. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1708 then retaken by the French in 1709.

HMS Fame was a 24-gun French privateer, La Renommee taken in the Mediterranean in July 1709. She was surveyed at Port Mahone 6 July 1709 and fitted out as per Admiral Byng's order. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in July 1709 for service in the Mediterranean. She was retaken by three French ships off Port Mahone 21 September 1710.

HMS Glasgow was the Royal Scottish Navy vessel Royal Mary transferred to the Royal Navy by the Act of Union of 1707. Her design was based on the standardize 20-gun sixth rates. After commissioning she was assigned to Home Waters. She took a privateer in 1708 and another in 1712. She was sold in 1719.

The Modified 1719 Establishment Group of sixth rates were basically identical to the 1719 Establishment Group except they were two feet wider. One ship would be a rebuild of an earlier vessel and one vessel of new construction. These vessels like the 1719 Establishment Group would have no lower gun ports, however, would have ten oar ports per side on the lower deck. These ships would be constructed between 1729 and 1732.

HMS Scarborough was a 32-gun fifth rate vessel built at Woolwich Dockyard in 1693/94. Shortly after commissioning she was taken by two French privateers and went under French service. She was recaptured in 1697 and renamed Milford. She spent some time off Africa then the West Indies. She was rebuilt in 1705. She was in the North Sea, the Mediterranean and finally the West Indies where she was wrecked in 1720.

HMS Tartar was a 32-gun fifth rate built by the Woolwich Dockyard in 1702. Her initial commissioning was in time for the War of the Spanish Succession. She partook in the Battle of Velez Malaga in 1704. She spent the rest of her career on counter piracy and trade protection patrols. She was rebuilt as a 20-gun sixth rate in 1733. She was finally broken in 1755.
