HMTV is an Indian 24-hour Telugu news channel launched on 12 February 2009. [1] The channel is operated by Hyderabad Media Pvt. Ltd, which also runs the English newspaper The Hans India . [2] [3] HMTV is a part of Kapil Group, promoted by K. Vaman Rao. [4] [5] [6] Kapil Group is a business conglomerate of over 30 companies whose first company, Kapil Chit Funds was started in 1981. [7] [5] [8] The current CEO of the channel is Mrs. Lakshmi Rao. [2]

History

HMTV launched on 12 February 2009 as a 24-hour Telugu news channel. It is operated by Hyderabad Media House Ltd. [9] [10] [6] [11] K. Ramachandra Murthy, a veteran journalist was the first CEO and chief editor of the channel. [1] [9] The slogan of the channel is "Vaartha Aagadu, Nijam Daagadu". [2]

HMTV is also the first Telugu news channel to have an ombudsman to carry out a critical review of its content and provide a conduit for viewers. [12]

In July 2014, Rajasekhar became the MD and chief editor of the channel replacing K. Ramachandra Murthy who previously served in those roles. [13] As of 2017, the channel was not profitable. [14]

Ownership

The channel is owned by Kapil Group, promoted by K. Vaman Rao. [1] [9] [4] Kapil Group is a conglomerate of over 30 companies having presence in over 16 business activities. [7] [8]

Kapil Chit Funds, the first company of the group started in 1981 at Karimnagar by K. Vaman Rao, a Chartered Accountant by profession. [7] [8] It later diversified into sectors like construction, property management, hospitality, manufacturing, media, energy, agriculture, healthcare, finance, IT. [7] [5] [8] [11]

Programming and reception

The channel broadcasts shows such as "Jordar Varthalu", and "Nela Thalli". [2] The public discussion program 'Dasa Disa' was widely acclaimed. [12] K. Ramachandra Murthy, CEO of Hyderabad Media House at the time, mentioned that the acclaim for 'Dasa Disa' on the channel gave them the confidence to venture into print media with The Hans India in July 2011. [9] The channel has also been lauded for taking up issues like the girl child, building toilets in government schools, drinking water etc. [12]

Padmaja Shaw of The Hoot, a media watchdog noted that HMTV maintained an apolitical stance unlike most other Telugu news channels. She also mentioned that the channel performed better in the Telangana region. [11]

Andhra Prabha - Journalism first is a Telugu language daily newspaper of India sold mostly in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The newspaper is one of the oldest running Telugu-language daily newspapers of India. The newspaper and website (www.prabhanews.com) were owned by the New Indian Express Group of Companies but the newspaper was sold to entrepreneurs from Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The newspaper is owned by Mootha Gopalakrishna, former M.L.A of Kakinada city. The newspaper publishes neutral news not in support of any political organisation and is the one of the most balanced and close-to-reality Telugu language daily newspapers.

TV5 is popular for its incisive business reportage.

ABN Andhra Jyothy is an Indian Telugu-language 24-hour news channel launched on 15 October 2009. Aamoda Broadcasting Network is the holding company of the channel and is promoted by Vemuri Radhakrishna. The media house also owns the Telugu daily newspaper Andhra Jyothy.

It was marketed as an independent channel with a co-operative type ownership, free from the influences of big businesses. In 2018, there was a change in the ownership of the channel. It was reportedly bought by business houses close to some politicians.
