Hannah Blythyn (born 17 April 1979 [1] [2] ) is a Welsh politician who served as the Minister for Social Partnership in the Welsh Government from 2021 to 2024. [3] She was previously the Environment Minister from 2017 to 2018 and the Deputy Minister for Housing and Local Government from 2018 to 2021. A member of Welsh Labour and Co-operative Party,she has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Delyn since 2016. [4]
Hannah Blythyn was born on 17 April 1979. [5] Blythyn is a proud North Walian [6] and grew up in a working-class community in Connah's Quay,North Wales. [7]
Blythyn went to St Richard Gwyn school in Flint. [8] After leaving school,she studied English Literature at De Montfort University in Leicester. [9] Blythyn also has a Masters in International Politics and Human Rights from City University London,which she studied for part-time whilst working.
Blythyn is a Welsh learner, [10] who first started learning Welsh as an adult whilst living in London and has delivered speeches and oral statements in Welsh in the Siambr. [11]
Hannah Blythyn’s first job was working in McDonald’s,before working in the charitable sector as a communications and events officer for Student Action for Refugees. [12]
Whilst studying for her Masters,Blythyn worked as a parliamentary assistant for Alyn and Deeside Labour MP Mark Tami. [13]
Blythyn went on to work for Amicus (trade union),then the second largest trade union in the UK before merging with TGWU to form Unite the Union. Blythyn worked as a political officer for Unite at their head office in London before becoming the first political and policy head for Unite Wales. She was active in a number of successful campaigns that led to legislative action and positive change both in Wales and across the UK. [14]
Hannah Blythyn joined the Labour Party in 2000 and is a former co-chair of UK Young Labour and LGBT Labour. [15] She first represented the UK in 2003 as part of the UK delegation to the European Community Organisation of Socialist Youth (ECOSY),now known as Young European Socialists (YES),where she became the Vice President a couple of years later.
Hannah Blythyn was selected as the Welsh Labour candidate for the Delyn constituency of the Senedd. On 5 May 2016,she was elected a Member of the Senedd;she had received 9,480 of the 23,159 votes cast (40.9%). [4] On 6 May 2021 she retained the seat in the 2021 Senedd election;she received 12,846 votes,48.1% of the 26,443 votes cast. [16]
Blythyn is a former co-chair of LGBT Labour. [17]
Hannah Blythyn was first appointed to the Welsh Government in 2017 and served in junior ministerial roles under First Ministers Carwyn Jones and Mark Drakeford. She was appointed Deputy Minister for Social Partnership in 2021 by Drakeford,before her role was retitled to Minister by Vaughan Gething upon his appointment as First Minister in March 2024. [18] She was dismissed from her position as Social Partnership Minister on 16 May 2024. [19] This was following allegations of leaked text messages to the media. [20]
Hannah Blythyn became one of the first three openly gay and lesbian Members of the Welsh Assembly upon her election in 2016. [21] She featured in the 2017,2022,and 2023 Pinc List of leading Welsh LGBT figures. [22]
Blythyn lives in Mold,in her North Wales constituency of Delyn with her wife,Laura,and their dog Scout. Her granddad (maternal) worked at the steelworks in Shotton and Taid (paternal granddad) worked at the Point of Ayr Colliery. [23]
Outside of politics,Blythyn likes spending time outdoors and now labels herself as a lapsed cyclist,having previously taken part in a charity bike ride across Kenya. [24]

Mair Eluned Morgan,Baroness Morgan of Ely is a Welsh Labour politician serving as Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care in the Welsh Government since 2021. Morgan has served as a Member of the House of Lords since 2011 and as a Member of the Senedd (MS) since 2016. She was previously Minister for the Welsh Language from 2017 to 2021,Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing from 2020 to 2021,and a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1994 to 2009.
Jane Elizabeth Hutt is a Welsh Labour Party politician serving as Welsh Government Chief Whip since 2023 and Trefnydd of the Senedd since 2024. She has served as the Member of the Senedd (MS) for the Vale of Glamorgan since 1999.
Susan Lesley Griffiths,known as Lesley Griffiths,is a Welsh Labour politician serving as Cabinet Secretary for Culture and Social Justice since 2024. She previously served as Trefnydd of the Senedd and Minister for North Wales from 2021 to 2024,and Minister for Rural Affairs from 2016 to 2024. She worked as a secretary to John Marek and the constituency assistant to Ian Lucas,successive Members of Parliament for Wrexham,and was elected to the Senedd from the Wrexham constituency in 2007. She has held a number of cabinet positions in the Welsh Government. In December 2009 she was appointed Deputy Minister for Science,Innovation and Skills.
Mick Antoniw is a Welsh Labour and Co-operative politician,serving as Counsel General for Wales since 2021,having previously served in the position from 2016 to 2017. He previously served as Minister for the Constitution from 2021 to 2024. He has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Pontypridd since 2011.
Humphrey Vaughan ap David Gething is a Welsh Labour and Co-operative Party politician who has served as First Minister of Wales and the leader of Welsh Labour since 2024. He previously served as the Minister for Health and Social Services from 2016 to 2021 and Minister for the Economy from 2021 to 2024. He has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Cardiff South and Penarth since 2011.
Jeremy Miles is a Welsh Labour Co-op politician,serving as Cabinet Secretary for Economy,Energy and Welsh Language since 2024. He previously served in the Welsh Government as Counsel General for Wales from 2017 to 2021,Brexit Minister from 2018 to 2021,and the Minister for coordinating Wales’recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2021. Miles has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Neath since 2016.
Mark Drakeford is a Welsh politician who served as First Minister of Wales and Leader of Welsh Labour from 2018 to 2024. He previously served in the Welsh Government as Cabinet Secretary for Finance from 2016 to 2018 and Minister for Health and Social Services from 2013 to 2016. Drakeford was first elected as the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Cardiff West in 2011 and is considered to be on the soft left of Labour.
Jenny Ann Rathbone is a Welsh Labour and Co-operative politician who has been a Member of the Senedd (MS) since 2011.
Kenneth Christian Skates is a Welsh Labour politician who has served as Cabinet Secretary for North Wales and Transport since 2024. Skates has represented the constituency of Clwyd South in the Senedd since the election of 2011. He is an alumnus of the University of Cambridge,and worked as a journalist prior to becoming a politician. In September 2014 he became the deputy minister for Culture,Tourism and Sport. From May 2016 to December 2018 he was the Cabinet Secretary for Economy,Infrastructure and Skills,and was the Minister for Economy,Transport and North Wales until he stood down on 13 May 2021.
Julie James is a Welsh Labour politician serving as Cabinet Secretary for Housing,Local Government,and Planning since 2024. James has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Swansea West since 2011. She served as Minister for Housing and Local Government from 2018 to 2021.
Rebecca Mary Evans is a Welsh Labour and Co-operative politician who has served as Cabinet Secretary for Finance,Constitution and Cabinet Office since 2024. She was previously Minister for Finance from 2018 to 2024. Evans has served as the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Gower since 2016,and a Member for Mid and West Wales from 2011 to 2016.
Dawn Alison Louise Bowden is a British Labour Party politician and trade unionist serving as Minister for Social Care since 2024. She previously served as Chief Whip of the Welsh Government from 2021 to 2023 and Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport from 2021 to 2024. Bowden has been the Member of the Senedd (MS) for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney since 2016.

The 2018 Welsh Labour Party leadership election took place between 9 November and 6 December 2018 to elect a successor to Carwyn Jones as leader of the Welsh Labour Party.
The next Senedd election is due to be held on or before 7 May 2026 to elect 96 members to the Senedd. It will be the seventh devolved general election since the Senedd was established in 1999. It will also be the second election since the Senedd changed its name in May 2020,and the first following reforms to the voting system which increased the size of the Senedd from 60 members to 96 and shortened its term from five years to four.
The 2024 Welsh Labour leadership election took place between February and March 2024 to select Mark Drakeford's successor as leader of Welsh Labour,who in turn would become First Minister of Wales. Drakeford announced his resignation and retirement on 13 December 2023,five years after his election. Voting began in February 2024 with the new leader announced on 16 March 2024. Vaughan Gething won the election with 51.7% of the vote. The next scheduled Senedd election is due on or before 7 May 2026.
