History
Hanze UAS was founded in 1986 as the merger of various local institutes for professional education, the oldest of which is the Academie Minerva, founded in 1798, which was the first multi-sectoral institute for practical higher education in the Netherlands. The mission of the Academy Minerva was “The improvement of Drawing, Construction and Nautical Sciences, together with the aligned Arts and Sciences, within all ranks of society, and in particular to improve the skills of the disadvantaged." [4] Throughout the centuries that followed many more institutions, engaged in a wide range of different fields, were established.
In 1986, Groningen was the first city in the Netherlands where 16 of the 24 vocational schools merged into a larger institute, as recommended in the government paper “Expansion, Division of Tasks, and Concentration in the Higher Educational System”. [4] Hence, Hanze became quickly one of the biggest Universities of Applied Sciences in the nation and data suggests it is growing every year. [5] In 1989 the university joined the Erasmus Programme and in 2014 Hanze became holder of the Erasmus Charter of Higher Education 2014–2020. [6] [7]
The name of Hanze UAS is linked to the Hanseatic League (Dutch: Hanze). Groningen, the city hosting the majority of the university's facilities, was member of the Hanseatic League between 1282 and 1669. [8]
Groningen is the capital city and main municipality of Groningen province in the Netherlands. The capital of the north, Groningen is the largest place as well as the economic and cultural centre of the northern part of the country; as of December 2021, it had 235,287 inhabitants, making it the sixth largest city/municipality in the Netherlands and the second largest outside the Randstad.

With over 27,000 students and over 3,000 staff at sites in Zwolle and Almere, Windesheim is one of the more prominent universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands. Elsevier and Keuzegids HBO have ranked Windesheim second among the universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands for several years in a row.
The International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam is an independent international graduate school of policy-oriented social science. ISS was established in 1952 by Dutch universities and the Netherlands Ministry of Education. The ISS is located in The Hague, Netherlands.
The Dutch National Students Association is one of two national representations and spokesman of students in the Netherlands at the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, VSNU, Association of Higher Professional Education, DUO, etc. The purpose of ISO is to improve the quality of higher education, protection of students' interests and representation of 688.000 students in higher education.
Fontys University of Applied Sciences is a Dutch university of applied sciences, located in the southern Netherlands. It has over 44,000 students in several campuses. The three largest Fontys campuses are located in the cities of Eindhoven, Tilburg and Venlo. The name Fontys comes from the Latin word "fons" which means "source". Fontys offers 200 bachelor's and master's study programmes in the fields of economics, technology, health care, social work, sports and teacher training. A selection of these programmes is offered in German and English. In the independent Dutch ranking known as Keuzegids, Fontys is among the top-ranked large universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands. In 2014, former Fontys Chairperson Nienke Meijer was named the "Most Influential Woman in the Netherlands".
The Hague University of Applied Sciences is a university of applied sciences with its campuses located in and around The Hague in the Randstad metropolitan region in the west of the Netherlands. The city is home to the Dutch government, royal family and many major international legal, security and peace institutions. Since the university was founded in 1987 it has expanded to four campuses in the near-side cities of The Hague, Delft and Zoetermeer. The main campus in The Hague is located behind The Hague Hollands Spoor railway station by the Laakhaven Canal.
The International Business School Groningen is the business school of the Hanze University Groningen in Groningen, Netherlands.
The Prince Claus Conservatoire is one of the nine conservatoires in the Netherlands. It is a constituent of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen.
University of Applied Sciences Leiden, is a vocational university in the western Netherlands, located in the city of Leiden. It currently has approximately 12,000 students, mainly studying towards associate and bachelor's degrees. The school also offers master's degrees in nursing and physical therapy.
The Institute of Engineering Assen is part of the Hanze University Groningen in the Netherlands. The institute is based in Assen where it offers a Bachelor Programme in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and a Master Programme in Sensor System Engineering. It started in September 2008 as a European pioneer in the field of sensor technology education, and is working closely together with partners such as Astron and the Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij BV (NAM) / Shell. From 2019, the first year students of the Bachelor were moved in Groningen's Zernike Campus, were the majority of the Hanze faculties are present.
Metropolia University of Applied Sciences is the largest University of Applied Sciences in Finland. The university offers a total of 93 degree programs in the fields of Business, Culture, Health Care and Social Services, and Technology.
Founded in 1996, the Frank Mohr Institute is the Institute for Graduate Studies and Research in the Arts and Emerging Media of the Hanze University Groningen in the Netherlands. In cooperation with the University of Groningen, the institute accommodates three MFA courses: Painting, Media Art and Design Technologies (MADTECH), and Scenography. The institute also provides an international programme of courses in the field of new media for university graduates, artists, designers, and participants from the business world. Notable artists include: Ottokaji Iroke, Kimball Holth, Salim Bayri, Kevin Alan Swenson, Paraskevi Frasiola, Anika Mariam Ahmed, Michiel Burger, Susanna Inglada, Lee McDonald and Luca Grimaldi.

Åland University of Applied Sciences is a university of applied sciences in Mariehamn, Åland. It is housed in three different buildings, the North building, the Western Building and the South Building. It has approx. 550 full-time students, mainly from Åland and Sweden. The number of employees is around 60. Åland UAS is maintained by the Government of Åland. It is the only higher education institution in the Åland Islands. The education in the Åland University of Applied Sciences is conducted in Swedish.
Saxion University of Applied Sciences is a Dutch university of applied sciences with three campuses in the eastern Netherlands. It provides more than 100 courses in study fields as archaeology, finance, law, engineering, hospitality, business, IT, broadcasting, health and digital media. With over 27,000 students, it is one of the largest institutions of higher education in the Netherlands. Saxion offers bachelor & master education and research focused on living technology.
Egbert Jan Louwerse (1975) is a flautist from the Netherlands. He is a professor of flute at the Prince Claus Conservatoire Groningen, part of the Hanze University, Groningen.
Sabrina Vlaškalić was a Serbian classical guitarist. Unusually gifted, she saw music and numbers as colours and she was compared to the French child prodigy Ida Presti. By 23 she was teaching music at a conservatory and a university.
