Harry Charles Katz (born March 11,1951) is an American university professor and academic administrator. He is the Jack Sheinkman Professor of Collective Bargaining at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations. From November 14,2014,to July 31,2015,he served as the interim Provost of Cornell University.
Katz was born in The Bronx,New York,and grew up in Northern California. He received an A.B. (1973) and Ph.D. (1977) in Economics from the University of California,Berkeley,after which he taught at MIT until 1985. He then went to Cornell,was appointed the Kenneth F. Kahn Dean of the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations in 2005,and became the interim Provost in 2014.
His research focuses on new structures for labor-management relationships in the United States,and his work argues the need for a more cooperative system. He is an expert on labor relations in the automobile and telecommunications industries both in the U.S. and abroad,and is often invited to lecture about those industries and about current labor-management relationships in general.
Katz is the author of several books,including Shifting Gears:Changing Labor Relations in the U.S. Automobile Industry,The Transformation of American Industrial Relations,Converging Divergences:Worldwide Changes in Employment Systems,and the widely used textbook An Introduction to Collective Bargaining and Industrial Relations.
In 2012,Katz was named a Scholar Fellow by the Labor and Employment Relations Association. [1] He is the current president of the International Labor and Employment Relations Association [2]
Industrial relations or employment relations is the multidisciplinary academic field that studies the employment relationship;that is,the complex interrelations between employers and employees,labor/trade unions,employer organizations,and the state.
Collective bargaining is a process of negotiation between employers and a group of employees aimed at agreements to regulate working salaries,working conditions,benefits,and other aspects of workers' compensation and rights for workers. The interests of the employees are commonly presented by representatives of a trade union to which the employees belong. The collective agreements reached by these negotiations usually set out wage scales,working hours,training,health and safety,overtime,grievance mechanisms,and rights to participate in workplace or company affairs.
The New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University (ILR) is an industrial relations school and one of the four New York State contract colleges at Cornell University,located in Ithaca,New York,United States. The School has six academic departments which include:Economics,Human Resource Management,International and Comparative Labor,Labor Relations,Organizational Behavior,and Social Statistics.
John Thomas Dunlop was an American administrator,labor economist,and educator. Dunlop was the United States Secretary of Labor between 1975 and 1976 under President Gerald Ford. He was Director of the United States Cost of Living Council from 1973 to 1974,Chairman of the United States Commission on the Future of Worker-Management Relations from 1993 to 1995,which produced the Dunlop Report in 1994. He was also arbitrator and impartial chairman of various United States labor-management committees,and a member of numerous government boards on industrial relations disputes and economic stabilization.
Kate Bronfenbrenner is the Director of Labor Education Research at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations. She is a leading authority on successful strategies in labor union organizing,and on the effects of outsourcing and offshoring on workers and worker rights.
The Martin P. Catherwood Library,commonly known as the Catherwood Library or simply the ILR Library,serves the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. One of over a dozen libraries within the Cornell University Library system,the Catherwood Library is considered the most comprehensive resource of its kind in North America. The Catherwood Library's stated mission is to serve as a comprehensive information center in support of the research,instruction,and service commitments of the Industrial and Labor Relations School and Cornell community. The Catherwood Library is an official Depository Library of the International Labour Organization (ILO),one of only two in the country to be so designated;the other is the Library of Congress.
The Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA),was founded in 1947 as the Industrial Relations Research Association. LERA is an organization for professionals in industrial relations and human resources. Headquartered at the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign,the organization has more than 3,000 members at the national level and in its local chapters. A collective agreement,collective labour agreement (CLA) or collective bargaining agreement (CBA) is a written contract negotiated through collective bargaining for employees by one or more trade unions with the management of a company that regulates the terms and conditions of employees at work. Kleiner received his M.A. in Labor and Industrial Relations,and Ph.D. in economics from the University of Illinois and his undergraduate degree in economics from Bradley University. He is a professor and the inaugural AFL-CIO chair in labor policy at the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota,Minneapolis. From 1974 to 1987 he was an assistant and later full professor at the School of Business at the University of Kansas.

Michael H. Belzer is an internationally recognized expert on the trucking industry,especially the institutional and economic impact of deregulation. He is a professor in the economics department at Wayne State University. He is the author of Sweatshops on Wheels:Winners and Losers in Trucking Deregulation. Along with Gregory M. Saltzman,he coauthored Truck Driver Occupational Safety and Health:2003 Conference Report and Selective Literature Review,National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health,2007. He has written many peer-reviewed articles on trucking industry economics,labor,occupational safety and health,infrastructure,and operational issues.
Francine Dee Blau is an American economist and professor of economics as well as Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University. In 2010,Blau was the first woman to receive the IZA Prize in Labor Economics for her "seminal contributions to the economic analysis of labor market inequality." She was awarded the 2017 Jacob Mincer Award by the Society of Labor Economists in recognition of lifetime of contributions to the field of labor economics.

Clair Brown is an American economist who is Professor of Economics and Director of the Center for Work,Technology,and Society at the University of California,Berkeley. Brown is a past Director of the Institute of Industrial Relations (IRLE) at UC Berkeley. Brown has published research on many aspects of how economies function,including high-tech industries,development engineering,the standard of living,wage determination,poverty,and unemployment.
Jean Trepp McKelvey was an American economist specialising in arbitration and industrial relations. McKelvey was an esteemed tenure professor at Sarah Lawrence College (1932–1945) and Cornell University (1946–1976) where at the latter she was a founding faculty member for the School of Industrial and Labor Relations,developing the curriculum and teaching five courses including arbitration,labor law and labor practices. Coined the "mother of arbitration",in 1947 McKelvey was the first woman admitted to the National Academy of Arbitrators,in 1970 became its first woman president and established an arbitration training program for women and minorities. In addition to her successful published research career,McKelvey served on the New York State Board of Mediation (1955–1966) and Federal Services Impasses Panel (1979–1990) and received numerous accolades including the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service's Special Award for Distinguished Service in Labor Management Relations (1973) and Arbitrator of the Year Award from the American Arbitration Association (1983).
