Harry M. Tuft (born 1935) is a noted figure in the world of folk music, particularly in the state of Colorado during the American Folk Music Revival. Tuft is the founder and former owner of the Denver Folklore Center, and a musician.

Biography

Harry Tuft was born in 1935 and raised in Philadelphia. His father was a doctor and his mother, a psychologist. Tuft attended West Philadelphia High School. Tuft graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in philosophy and two years post-graduate work in architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Tuft grew up singing and playing a series of instruments including the clarinet, ukulele, and baritone uke.

In the 1950s Tuft became interested in folk music and started playing a six-string guitar. He began performing for youth groups and frequenting Philadelphia's popular folk music coffeehouse, the Gilded Cage. Philadelphia's lively folk scene provided the setting for Harry's first ventures into public singing. While playing Sunday "hoots" at the Gilded Cage Tuft met Dick Weissman, a talented banjo and guitar player, and took an interest in the folk group The Weavers and in folk music.

In 1960 Tuft made a trip to visit Weissman in New York City and see firsthand the folk culture of Greenwich Village. One of the first places Weissman took Tuft was Izzy Young's Folklore Center. Later in 1960 Tuft and Weissman traveled to the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. and then on to Colorado. Weissman headed west to California while Tuft got a job at the Holy Cat in Georgetown, Colorado. The Holy Cat was a restaurant and Tuft's job included waiting and busing tables, bartending, washing dishes, and janitorial duties. Tuft also performed at venues such as the Limelite in Aspen, Colorado.

Tuft's stay in Georgetown allowed him to also pursue his passion for skiing. While working at the Holy Cat Tuft met Hal Neustaedter who was the owner of "The Exodus", a premiere folk club in Denver, Colorado. Neustedter suggested that Tuft look into starting a folklore center in Denver. In 1961 Tuft moved to the west coast and briefly drove a cab for Sausalito Taxi Company while looking for opportunities to perform. Tuft also met up with Weissman in California who was now performing with the folk group, The Journeymen. While in California Tuft performed at venues such as The Fox and the Hound in San Francisco. Tuft returned to the east coast, and with further encouragement from Izzy Young, decided to open a folklore center in Denver, Colorado. Tuft's folklore center would combine the merchandising aspect of Izzy's Folklore Center while also providing the teaching and performing aspect of the Olde Town School of Folk Music. In December 1961 Tuft used his life savings of $900 to buy stock from Izzy Young and loaded his 1951 Dodge truck and headed to Denver. [1]

Denver Folklore Center

Tuft opened the Denver Folklore Center on March 12, 1962, at 608 E. 17th Ave. in Denver's Swallow Hill district. The Denver Folklore Center was a store for instruments, records, books, and everything related to folk music, including music lessons. Hootenanies, called "hoots", also took place on Sundays. Denver Folklore Center resembled the rustic, old, and antique look of the New York Folklore Center and became one of the nations focal points during the American Folk Music Revival during the 1960s and was consistently mentioned in articles and columns in folk music publications such as Sing Out!, the official magazine of the folk movement during the folk revival. The Denver Folklore Center presented concerts by Elizabeth Cotten, Joan Baez, Doc Watson, Muddy Waters, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Mike Seeger, Taj Mahal, Ian & Sylvia, The Mamas and the Papas, and the first ever performance of Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger, among many others.

The Denver Folklore Center also hosted performances, hoots and open mic nights in a performance space next to the store. The Rev. Gary Davis was just one of the artists that performed there. [2] It was also a regular stop for national acts performing in Denver, or traveling from Chicago to Los Angeles, such as Bob Dylan. [3] The Denver Folklore Center sign in book includes signatures from Jim Morrison and Frank Zappa, among many other national artists and music icons. The Denver Folklore Center became a hippie hangout in the late 1960s. In the 1970s folk music popularity and store profits declined. In the late 1970s the nonprofit organization Swallow Hill Music Association was created to reorganize and relieve expenses related to costs associated with concert promotions done by Denver Folklore Center. In 1980 Tuft was forced to close his store after losing the lease after the property owners sold to developers. The Denver Folklore Center name and stock was sold to employee Rick Kerby who reopened the store at a new location. The new location also included Swallow Hill Music Association. Tuft continued to give guitar lessons and served on Swallow Hill's board of directors. In 1983 Tuft returned as owner of the Folklore Center, paid its outstanding debts, and then closed the store. The Denver Folklore Center – Revisited

After working various jobs Tuft reopened the Denver Folklore Center in March 1993 at 1893 S. Pearl St. The new location remains a mecca for local musicians both young and old. Tuft maintained an active performing career both as a solo artist and together with other performers, most notably, for over 40 years with Steve Abbott and Jack Stanesco as the folk trio Grubstake. Tuft has performed hundreds of shows at clubs large and small and Grubstake opened for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Willie Nelson at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

Retirement

On August 16, 2016 Tuft retired as owner of the Denver Folklore Center desiring time to devote to performing and other pursuits. Ownership of the Denver Folklore Center was transferred to Saul Rosenthal and Claude Brachfeld, friends of Tuft who intend to retain the long-time staff and the ideals that have kept the business alive and well and an iconic part of the folk music landscape for nearly seven decades.

In the 1950s and 60s, Cohen was a founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers, a New York-based string band. Cohen made several expeditions to Peru to film and record the traditional culture of the Q'ero, an indigenous people. Cohen was also a professor of visual arts at SUNY Purchase College for 25 years.

Elizabeth "Libba" Cotten was an American folk and blues musician. She was a self-taught left-handed guitarist who played a guitar strung for a right-handed player, but played it upside down. This position meant that she would play the bass lines with her fingers and the melody with her thumb. Her signature alternating bass style has become known as "Cotten picking". NPR stated "her influence has reverberated through the generations, permeating every genre of music."

The American folk music revival began during the 1940s and peaked in popularity in the mid-1960s. Its roots went earlier, and performers like Josh White, Burl Ives, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Big Bill Broonzy, Richard Dyer-Bennet, Oscar Brand, Jean Ritchie, John Jacob Niles, Susan Reed, Paul Robeson, Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey and Cisco Houston had enjoyed a limited general popularity in the 1930s and 1940s. Gerdes Folk City, sometimes spelled Gerde's Folk City, was a music venue in the West Village, part of Greenwich Village, Manhattan, in New York City. Initially opened by owner Mike Porco as a restaurant called Gerdes, it eventually began to present occasional incidental music. It was first located at 11 West 4th Street, before moving in 1970 to 130 West 3rd Street. The club closed in 1987.

Contemporary folk music refers to a wide variety of genres that emerged in the mid 20th century and afterwards which were associated with traditional folk music. Starting in the mid-20th century a new form of popular folk music evolved from traditional folk music. This process and period is called the (second) folk revival and reached a zenith in the 1960s. The most common name for this new form of music is also "folk music", but is often called "contemporary folk music" or "folk revival music" to make the distinction. The transition was somewhat centered in the US and is also called the American folk music revival. Fusion genres such as folk rock and others also evolved within this phenomenon. While contemporary folk music is a genre generally distinct from traditional folk music, it often shares the same English name, performers and venues as traditional folk music; even individual songs may be a blend of the two.

Upon his return to New York in 1959 after a nearly a decade spent based in London, UK, Alan Lomax produced a concert, Folksong '59, in New York City's Carnegie Hall, featuring Arkansas singer Jimmy Driftwood; the Selah Jubilee Singers and Drexel Singers ; Muddy Waters and Memphis Slim (blues); Earl Taylor and the Stoney Mountain Boys (bluegrass); Pete Seeger, Mike Seeger ; and The Cadillacs.

Swallow Hill Music is a Denver, Colorado based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving roots, acoustic and folk music. The school is inspired by the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. Swallow Hill hosts hundreds of concerts a year ranging from national acts, such as Sheryl Crow and Josh Ritter, to many talented local artists and former students.

New York State is a major center for all types of music. Its diverse community has contributed to introducing and spreading many genres of music, including salsa, jazz, folk, rock and roll, and classical. New York's plethora of music venues and event halls serve as popular markers which have housed many noteworthy artists.

Richard Weissman is an American singer, composer, banjo player, author and teacher.

The Colorado Music Hall of Fame is a museum located in the Trading Post at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

Anton Robert "Bob" Yellin is an American banjo player and founding member of The Greenbriar Boys bluegrass music group.

Walter Bell Conley was an American folk singer, Hollywood actor, voice actor, and owner of Denver's folk venue Conley's Nostalgia. The Rocky Mountain News described Conley as the founding father of Denver's folk scene, which began in the late 1950s and stretched into the mid-1960s. Conley shared stages with, and opened for, Josh White, Cisco Houston, Mama Cass Elliot, Floyd Red Crow Westerman, and Judy Collins, among many others. Conley also opened his home to a young and unknown Bob Dylan in the summer of 1960, and introduced Denver to the little-known Smothers Brothers that same year. As the owner of Conley's Nostalgia, Walt brought in big-name performers such as John Fahey and Dave Van Ronk. To those who worked with him, knew him, and wrote about him, he is referred to as Denver's “Grandfather of Folk Music.” Conley remained an entertainer until his death from a massive stroke at the age of 74. At the time of his death, Conley was married to Joan Holden. Conley had four children from previous relationships. Conley's resting place is the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">The Family Dog Denver</span> Former music venue in Denver, Colorado

The Family Dog Denver was a concert dance hall located at 1601 West Evans Avenue in Denver, Colorado. Opened from September 1967 to July 1968, it is regarded as a seminal music venue that launched Denver on its trajectory to its current status as a major concert destination by introducing never-before-seen acts like The Doors, Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Buffalo Springfield, Janis Joplin, Chuck Berry, and many others. Many acts, like The Doors and Van Morrison, for example, had yet to become famous when they played The Dog, evidenced by the poster artists having to stylize the names of their leading songs into the poster art for the shows. The Family Dog is also seen as a cultural turning point in Denver from the conservative, western-minded sensibility of the early and mid-20th century to the current, liberal-minded climate. The venue's history, surrounding drama and ultimate impact had been largely unknown and unrealized until it was unearthed and detailed for the first time in the 2021 documentary The Tale of the Dog, produced and directed by Dan Obarski & Scott Montgomery and distributed by Cinedigm. As there are no useful photos, no video and little written history remaining of the Family Dog Denver, the film's oral history format told in first person by the people who were there serves as a definitive reference for “The Dog.”
