The series covers the life of the controversial British reality dating show There's Something About Miriam , as well as the life of its star, Mexican model Miriam Rivera. The series also examines the topics of gender, sexuality, and the decision making process that went into the show's creation and filming. [4] [3]
The series begins with a look into Miriam's early life, from her childhood in Mexico to her time in the United States and participation in the House of Xtravaganza. Miriam was eventually discovered by British television producer Remy Blumenfeld, who planned on making her the focus of a dating game show. He and the other show creators wanted to treat There's Something About Miriam as a social experiment about gender and sexuality. [5] They chose not to reveal that Miriam was a transgender woman until the final episode, upon which point all of the bachelors would be informed. [6] Great effort was taken to keep this secret and to this end none of the contestants were allowed to spend much time with Miriam. Contestants who suspected were quickly eliminated from the show. [5] Miriam became particularly close with Tom despite these limitations. Lysette compares this to a relationship Miriam had while she was a teenager attending high school in the United States as an undocumented immigrant. Miriam did not tell her classmates or the boy she was dating that she was assigned male at birth. Upon discovering this the boy reacted with disgust and told others at school, many of whom reacted similarly. Miriam chose to drop out of school. [5]
As the show's final episode approached the crew brought in a psychiatrist who had experience working with reality shows. According to Lysette, the producers had not brought in anyone counsel the contestants or to ensure that they were appropriate for the show prior to this point. [7] The psychiatrist, who was interviewed for the podcast, felt that this led to the events that occurred after filming was completed; contestant Scott was so enraged by the revelations that he destroyed the set. [8] After the contestants returned home, they were informed that they had a case for a lawsuit, even before the show was aired on television. [9] [1]
Harsh Reality released its first episode on November 29, 2021 and ran for six episodes. [10]

Them praised Harsh Reality, stating that "It’s a rare show of any kind that brings trans talent like this together on every level of production, and the combination pays off, particularly during interviews with the cis people who were involved in creating There’s Something About Miriam." There's Something About Miriam is a British reality television series broadcast by Sky1. The six-episode series premiered on 22 February 2004 and concluded on 24 March 2004. Set in Ibiza, Spain, the series depicted six men in competition for a £10,000 reward over who could make the best impression on 21-year-old Mexican model Miriam Rivera. The men were required to compete in various physical challenges in addition to going on individual and group dates with Rivera. In the final episode, Rivera selected the one contestant who left the best impression on her; upon selection, Rivera revealed to the contestants that she was a transgender woman who had not yet undergone gender-affirming surgery. The series was hosted by Welsh television presenter Tim Vincent.

RuPaul's Drag Race is an American reality competition television series, the first in the Drag Race franchise, produced by World of Wonder for Logo TV, WOW Presents Plus, VH1 and, beginning with the fifteenth season, MTV. The show documents RuPaul in the search for "America's next drag superstar". RuPaul plays the role of host, mentor, and head judge for this series, as contestants are given different challenges each week. Contestants are judged by a panel that includes RuPaul, Michelle Visage, an alternating third main judge of either Carson Kressley, Ross Mathews, or Ts Madison, and one or more guest judges, who critique their progress throughout the competition. She first rose to prominence in 2010 as a contestant on the second season of RuPaul's Drag Race, and later returned to compete on the first and fifth seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, and the first season of RuPaul's Drag Race: UK vs the World (2022), becoming one of the most popular queens from the franchise. Monica Dejesus-Anaya, known by the stage persona Monica Beverly Hillz, is an American drag queen, reality television personality and transgender activist, originally known for appearing on season 5 of RuPaul's Drag Race. She was the second contestant in the show's history to come out as a transgender woman on the show, after Sonique in season 2. Hillz coming out was historic as it was a first for network television.
Transparent is an American comedy-drama television series created by Joey Soloway for Amazon Studios that debuted on February 6, 2014. The story revolves around a Los Angeles family, the Pfeffermans, and their lives after learning that their parent is a trans woman named Maura. Transparent tells the story of Maura's coming out, as well as her family's personal journeys in discovering their own identities and coming to terms with Maura's identity. Transparent moves away from a solely transition-centred narrative and represents Maura's story in her role as a trans parent, grandparent, professor, partner, ex-spouse, sibling, and as an older person transitioning. Transparent also includes other queer representation in the Pfefferman family. Sarah explores her sexuality and works through relationship dilemmas throughout season one while Ali explores their gender and sexuality. Transparent's first season premiered in full on September 26, 2014, and its second season on December 11, 2015, third season on September 23, 2016, and fourth season on September 21, 2017.

Kylie Sonique Love, formerly known as Sonique, is an American entertainer, singer, dancer, model and reality television personality. Love was the first person to ever come out as transgender on any reality TV show.
