The First Church of Christ, Scientist was established in Davenport in 1892 by 16 practitioners as a branch of the mother church in Boston. [2] They built this building, which was designed by the prominent Davenport architectural firm of Clausen & Clausen, in 1912. A Christian Science Reading Room was opened downtown. First Church moved in the 1970s to a new facility on Fairhaven Road in Davenport.

The Harvest Time Family Worship Center was founded by the Revs. James and Cecelia Lee as the Pentecostal Deliverance Church in 1972. It was located in the 1500 block of Fillmore Street at the time. The congregation moved to this location in 1980. [3]

Architecture

The historic structure is a severe example of the Neoclassical style. The cross plan of the building is the only religious symbolism employed. It is very similar in that way to the original St. Anthony's Catholic Church (1836) downtown. [2] The main facade is dominated by the tetrastyle temple front with columns in antis that follow the Doric order. The main entrance into the church is recessed behind the tetrastyle "screen" and it is surmounted by a fanlight. The entry itself is made up of three openings and follows a Palladian motif. The central opening features a rounded arch. At the crossing in the center of the structure is a polygonal belvedere. The wood and concrete structure is covered with stucco.

The former First Church of Christ, Scientist, also known as The City Church, is located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States. Christian Science began in Boston in 1866 and it was introduced to Cedar Rapids twenty years later. A Sunday School was established in 1887 and it met at the old Dows Auditorium at Third Avenue and Third Street SE. The congregation was established in 1891 as an official branch of The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston. It was the first Christian Science congregation established in Iowa. They held their Wednesday evening services at the Peoples Unitarian Universalist Church. The congregation began construction on this building in 1914 and it was dedicated on Easter Sunday the following year. It is a red brick structure in the Neoclassical style. The rectangular building features a portico with four columns in the Doric order on the main facade, and a centered raised gable roof with cornice returns. The architectural style was chosen to "attract non-churchgoing people that may be intimidated by traditional religious structures." The Priester Building is a historic building located just north of Downtown Davenport, Iowa, United States. The low-rise office building was built for the headquarters of Priester Construction Company, and its real estate division, in 1958. The well-preserved structure is significant as an excellent example of the late International Style. It was designed by San Francisco architect John ("Jack") W. Kruse, formerly of Davenport, and the local architectural firm of Parish and Richardson. That firm has its roots in the architectural practice of prominent Davenport architect Frederick G. Clausen. It is believed that this was the first modernistic commercial design in Davenport, and it brought West Coast cutting-edge architecture to the Midwest. It is also noteworthy for its location in the side of a hill and the difficulties that presented for construction, and the first-ever use of a plastic shell for winter-time construction in the city. The T-shaped building rises three-stories to the height of 39.29 feet (11.98 m). It features perimeter landscaping, a curved mosaic wall on the west elevation to deflect traffic noise from Brady Street, views to the south and west that reflected weather and sun conditions on design and operating conditions, and it is fully air conditioned.
