Ocean County is a county located along the Jersey Shore in the south-central portion of the U.S. state of New Jersey,and the southernmost county in the New York metropolitan area. The county borders the Atlantic Ocean on the east and in terms of total area is the state's largest county. Its county seat is Toms River. The county is part of the Jersey Shore region and the South Jersey region of the state.
Lakewood Township is the most populous township in Ocean County,in the U.S. state of New Jersey. A rapidly growing community,as of the 2020 United States census,the township's population was 135,158,its highest decennial count ever and an increase of 42,315 (+45.6%) from the 2010 census count of 92,843,which in turn reflected an increase of 32,491 (+53.8%) from the 60,352 counted in the 2000 census. The township ranked as the fifth-most-populous municipality in the state in 2020,after ranking seventh in 2010,and 22nd in 2000,placing the township only behind the state's four biggest cities. The sharp increase in population from 2000 to 2010 was led largely by increases in the township's Orthodox Jewish and Latino communities. Further growth in the Orthodox community led to a sharp increase in population in the 2020 census,with a large number of births leading to a significant drop in the township's median age. The Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program calculated that the township's population was 139,506 in 2022,helping the fast-growing town surpass Elizabeth as the fourth-most-populous municipality in the state.

The 2009 New Jersey gubernatorial election took place on November 3,2009. Incumbent Democratic Governor Jon Corzine ran for a second term against Republican Chris Christie,Independent Christopher Daggett,and nine others,in addition to several write-in candidates. Christie won the election,with about 48.5 percent of the vote,to 44.9 percent for Corzine and 5.8 percent for Daggett. He assumed office on January 19,2010. This was the first election to fill the newly created office of lieutenant governor,with the candidates for governor choosing their running mates. Kim Guadagno,Christie's running mate,became New Jersey's first lieutenant governor following her inauguration.

Some counties and municipalities may have had local ballot questions as well. Incumbent Democratic Governor James Florio was narrowly defeated by Republican former Somerset County freeholder and 1990 U.S. Senate nominee Christine Todd Whitman. Primary elections were held on June 8,1993. In the Democratic primary,Governor Florio's only challenger,anti-tax activist John Budzash,was disqualified from the ballot due to invalid petition signatures. In the Republican primary,Whitman defeated W. Cary Edwards and James Wallwork.

The 2017 New Jersey General Assembly elections were held on November 7,2017,to elect members to all 80 seats of the New Jersey General Assembly. Prior to the elections,Democrats held a 52–28 majority in the lower house. Overall,the Democrats increased their majority by 2 to a super-majority at 54–26,due to holding all their seats as well as picking up open seats in District 2 and District 16. This tied Democrats for their largest majority since 1979.
The 1981 New Jersey State Senate elections were held on November 3. The New Jersey legislature reapportioned its state legislative districts in advance of the 1981 election. The new districts resulted in many senators running for re-election in newly re-numbered districts. The election coincided with a tightly contested gubernatorial election between Thomas Kean and James Florio. Republicans gained five seats,narrowing the Democratic majority to 22-18.
