Homestead is a city within Miami-Dade County in the U.S. state of Florida, between Biscayne National Park to the east and Everglades National Park to the west. Homestead is primarily a Miami suburb and a major agricultural area. It is a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area of South Florida, which was home to an estimated 6,012,331 people at the 2015 census. It is located approximately 26 miles (42 km) southwest of Miami, and 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Key Largo.The population was 80,737 as of the 2020 census.

The school was a pioneer of bilingual education in 1963, when it began teaching through the mediums of English and Spanish with two groups of students. Marcus A. Milam K-8 Center, usually referred to as M.A. Milam K-8 Center, or Milam, is located at 6020 West 16th Avenue Hialeah, Florida 33012. M.A. Milam serves as an elementary middle school or "K-8 center". Established as an elementary school in 1961 to serve the West Hialeah area, the school was expanded to serve as a K-8 school in 1998. It was named after Marcus A. Milam, a dairy pioneer and businessman. The school mascot is the colt. A lifelong educator and public school administrator, Crew served as Oregon's first Chief Education Officer in 2012 and 2013. He was appointed superintendent in September 2008. In February 2014, the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) named Carvalho the 2014 National Superintendent of the Year. On February 28, 2018, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio named Carvalho as the city's next Department of Education Chancellor, but he refused the offer the following day.

He also served three terms in the Florida House of Representatives from 2012 to 2018, which encompassed parts of Hialeah and Northwest Miami-Dade County, Florida.

Carey-Shuler, public servant, community activist and educator served as the first African American woman on the Board of County Commissioners for Miami-Dade County, Florida when she was appointed by then-Governor Robert Bob Graham on December 10, 1979. She was elected to the Commission in 1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, and 2004 while serving as the Chairwoman of the Board of County Commissioners from 2002-2004, when she became the first African-American to hold the position in the 60 years of Miami-Dade County governance.
