Honey, Wheat and Laughter is the third studio album by Canadian singer Anne Murray issued in 1970 on Capitol Records.

Contents

Honey, Wheat and Laughter contained work by, among others, James Taylor and Gene MacLellan. The album was released only in Canada; however, after Murray's single "Snowbird" gained traction in the United States, several of its tracks were re-released on the 1970 compilation Snowbird . [1]

MacLellan's "Put Your Hand in the Hand" would become a top-ten hit for the band Ocean in 1971.

Reception

The album won the 1971 Juno Award for Best Produced MOR Album. [2]

Gene MacLellan was a Canadian singer-songwriter from Prince Edward Island. Among his compositions were "Snowbird", made famous by Anne Murray, "Put Your Hand in the Hand", "The Call", "Pages of Time" and "Thorn in My Shoe". Elvis Presley, Lynn Anderson, Loretta Lynn, Joan Baez, and Bing Crosby were among the many artists who recorded MacLellan's songs.

The Juno Awards of 1971, representing Canadian music industry achievements of the previous year, were awarded on 22 February 1971 in Toronto at a ceremony in the St. Lawrence Hall. These would be the first awards to be formally titled the Junos as decided by RPM Magazine in 1970 following its first formal music awards event. George Wilson of CFRB radio was master of ceremonies for the awards for the second consecutive year.

A single release of "Snowbird" was issued in the U.S. in 1970, where it reached the top ten and started Murray's career there. Two singles were released from the album: "The Call", which reached #19 and #6 on the U.S. country and A/C singles charts respectively, and "Sunday Sunrise", which reached #49 on the country singles charts, and #13 on the A/C singles charts. "The Call" was a rerecording of a song, which Murray had originally included on her Honey, Wheat and Laughter album in 1970.
