Hubertus Matheus Maria van Megen (born 4 October 1961) is a Dutch prelate of the Catholic Church who works in the diplomatic service of the Holy See.

Biography

Hubertus van Megen was born on 4 October 1961 in Eygelshoven, the Netherlands. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Roermond on 13 June 1987.

Diplomatic career

He joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See and filled positions in Somalia and Brazil. As a Nunciature Council, he was at the Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations in Geneva. In Malawi he was Chargé d'Affaires beginning in 2010. [1]

On 8 March 2014, Pope Francis appointed him Titular Archbishop of Novaliciana and Apostolic Nuncio to Sudan. [2] He received his episcopal consecration from Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin on 17 May. [3] On 7 June 2014, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Eritrea as well. [4]

Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya on 16 February 2019. [5] On 19 March 2019, he was named Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan as well [6] On 25 May 2019, Pope Francis appointed him in the Permanent Observer at the United Nations Environment Program and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). The Holy See established what has evolved into its Apostolic Nunciature to the Nordic Countries on 16 March 1960 under the title Apostolic Delegation to Scandinavia with responsibility for representing the interests of the pope and the Catholic Church in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. It was originally located in Vedbæk, Denmark; since 2002 its office has been in Djursholm, Sweden, a suburb of Stockholm. The Holy See now has diplomatic relations with each of those countries and the Holy See appoints a nuncio, to date always the same person, to each of them.

The Apostolic Nunciature to South Sudan is the diplomatic mission of the Holy See to South Sudan. The Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan is an ecclesiastical office of the Catholic Church in South Sudan, with the rank of an ambassador. The nuncio serves both as the ambassador of the Holy See to the Republic of South Sudan and as the point-of-contact between the Catholic hierarchy in South Sudan and the pope.
