Hugh Acheson (born November 5, 1971) is a Canadian-born chef and restaurateur. He has owned four restaurants in Georgia, and serves as a judge on the reality cooking competition show Top Chef , and as an Iron Chef on Iron Chef Canada. [1]

Early life

Acheson was born on November 5, 1971, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. [2] The youngest of four children, Acheson has three older sisters. [2] His father was a professor of economics at Ottawa's Carleton University, while his mother was a reading tutor. [3] Acheson's parents divorced when he was young, [2] and he was raised primarily by his father in the Manor Park and Centretown neighbourhoods of Ottawa, [3] with the exception of two years that he spent living with his mother and stepfather in the American cities of Clemson, South Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia. Career

Acheson took his first kitchen job when he was fifteen years old, [3] as a dishwasher at Ottawa's Bank Street Café. [2] [4] He subsequently worked at other well-known Ottawa restaurants, before moving to Montreal, Quebec, to attend Concordia University. [2] There he studied political philosophy, but he soon dropped out to work in Italian restaurants in Montreal. [4] In 1994, Acheson moved back to Ottawa with his future wife, Mary Koon, and began working at Café Henry Burger, [2] an iconic restaurant that closed in the 2000s after over 80 years of operation. [5] At Henry Burger, Acheson learned about French cuisine, wine and etiquette under chef Rob McDonald. [6] Later in the 1990s, Acheson moved with his wife from Ottawa to her hometown of Athens, Georgia [3] so she could attend graduate school at the University of Georgia. [2] [4]

On the basis of his experience in French and Italian cuisine, Acheson became the head chef and manager at the Last Resort Grill upon moving to Athens. [4] Following his wife's graduation, the couple moved to San Francisco, California, where Acheson took a job at restaurant Mecca. He subsequently worked as a sous chef for San Francisco chef Gary Danko, [2] helping him to open his eponymous restaurant. [4]

After approximately two years in San Francisco, Acheson and his wife returned to Athens at the request of Melissa Clegg, the owner of Last Resort, who wanted Acheson to help her open a restaurant. [4] In turn, Acheson opened his first restaurant, Five and Ten, in Athens in 2000. [3] [4] In the following years, his endeavors have included:

In April 2024, Acheson announced his was selling his only remaining Georgia restaurant, Five and Ten, to long-time partner Peter Dale. [14]

Television

In 2011, Acheson competed on season 3 of Top Chef Masters , a reality competition show in which experienced celebrity chefs compete against each other in various challenges. He was eliminated in the first round, but subsequently returned in the second episode after another chef withdrew. He ultimately finished in fifth place out of twelve competitors. [2] [15] He was then invited to become a judge on season 9 of Top Chef , of which Top Chef Masters is a spin-off. Top Chef is a cooking competition show in which lesser-known chefs compete and are judged by more experienced chefs. [2] [3] Season 9 aired from November 2011 to February 2012. [16] Acheson also served as a judge on season 10 of Top Chef, which ran November 2012 to February 2013. [17] In 2013, he returned as a judge on Top Chef season 11 and as host and judge of "Battle of the Sous Chefs", a component of season 5 of Top Chef Masters. [18]

In 2020 he appeared as a judge on the Food Network Canada competition series Wall of Chefs .

Books

Acheson published his first cookbook, A New Turn in the South: Southern Flavors Reinvented for Your Kitchen, in 2011. [4] The book was awarded the 2012 James Beard Foundation award for "Best Cookbook in American Cooking." He was also co-winner of the 2012 James Beard Award for best chef, Southeast. [19] Hugh published his second cookbook, entitled Pick a Pickle: 50 recipes for Pickles, Relishes and Fermented Snacks, in the spring of 2014. His third cookbook was released in the spring of 2015 under the title The Broad Fork. [20] In the fall of 2017, his fourth cookbook was published, The Chef and the Slow Cooker. [21] In his fifth cookbook, Sous Vide: Better Home Cooking, published in October 2019, Acheson introduces many home cooks to the sous vide method of food preparation with 90 recipes to choose from. Awards

Acheson is a James Beard Foundation award winner as both a chef and cookbook author. He has been nominated nine times, with two wins.

Acheson was named one of the best new chefs in the United States by Food & Wine magazine in 2002. [3] [4]

Personal life

Acheson was married to Mary Koon, [2] a Georgia native [3] who worked as an editor at the Georgia Museum of Art. [19] They first met in middle school, when Acheson briefly lived in South Carolina with his mother. [4] They reconnected while at university in Canada, and married two years later. [4] Acheson and Koon divorced [25] quietly in 2017 and both still live in Athens, Georgia. They have two daughters, [2] Beatrice and Clementine. [4]

The media awards are presented at a dinner in New York City; the chef and restaurant awards were also presented in New York until 2015, when the foundation's annual gala moved to Chicago. Chicago will continue to host the Awards until 2027.

Kevin Gillespie is an American chef, author and former Top Chef contestant. He is a former co-owner and executive chef at Woodfire Grill in Atlanta. He opened Gunshow, a restaurant in Atlanta, in 2013 and Revival, a restaurant in Decatur, Georgia, in 2015. Gillespie also started Red Beard Restaurants, allowing Gillespie to expand and provide consulting services to other start-ups. Kevin Gillespie's Gamechanger opened in August 2017 on the 200 concourse western end zone of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Michael Voltaggio is an American chef, restaurateur, and author. He is a Top Chef television series alum and the winner of season 6. His brother Bryan Voltaggio is also a celebrity chef. He resides in Los Angeles, California.

Jonathan Waxman is an American chef who was one of the pioneers of California cuisine and is credited with being the first to bring its style, fusing French cooking techniques with the freshest local ingredients, to New York.

Michael Solomonov is an Israeli chef known for his restaurants in Center City, Philadelphia. His first restaurant Zahav, founded in 2008, has received national recognition including the James Beard Foundation "Outstanding Restaurant" in 2019. Solomonov was also awarded Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic in 2011, Cookbook of the Year in 2016, and Outstanding Chef in 2017 from the James Beard Foundation. Naomi Pomeroy is a professional chef and restaurateur. In an interview, Pomeroy explains that she began cooking at the age of three and created her first recipe at the age of four. She graduated from Lewis & Clark College in 1997 with a degree in history. Pomeroy has no formal culinary or business training; she developed her skills by watching other food-industry professionals. In 2007, she opened the restaurant Beast in Portland, Oregon. Previously, she started Gotham Tavern, Gotham Coffee shop, and ClarkLewis restaurant with Michael Hebb. In 2013, Working Mother magazine featured an article which details Pomeroy's experiences as a working single parent.

Ford Fry is an American chef and restaurateur based in Atlanta, Georgia. His team consists of 13 restaurants in Georgia, three restaurants in Houston, two in Charlotte and two in Nashville. Collectively, he owns 23 restaurants across America. Fry's portfolio of restaurants includes JCT. Kitchen & Bar, no. 246, The Optimist, St. Cecilia, Little Rey, Superica, Marcel State of Grace, BeetleCat, and La Lucha. Several of Fry's restaurants have received various accolades. In October 2015, CBS This Morning described Fry as "one of the most prolific chefs and restaurateurs" in the United States. In March 2021, Atlanta Eats dubbed Fry "a peerless restaurateur with many beloved brands."

Gregory Gourdet is an American chef, writer, restaurateur, and former finalist on the twelfth and seventeenth seasons of Bravo's American reality television series, Top Chef. He is of Haitian descent. He is the owner of the restaurant Kann and the former executive chef and culinary director of Departure at The Nines in Portland, Oregon. His book, Everyone’s Table: Global Recipes for Modern Health, is a national bestseller.

Mei Lin is a Chinese-born American chef and television personality, best known as the winner of the twelfth season of the Bravo television network's reality television series, Top Chef. After winning Top Chef in 2014, Lin worked as a personal chef for Oprah Winfrey before going on to open her first restaurant, Nightshade in Los Angeles in 2019. She became engaged to her fiancé Andrew Skala on January 14, 2023. On April 9, 2023, Lin won the fourth season of Food Network's Tournament of Champions.
