Hull Rugby Union Football Club is one of two rugby union clubs based in Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. They currently play in National League 2 North.

History

The club was formed in 1992 as a result of two clubs – Old Hymerians RUFC and Hull & East Riding RUFC (1989). The club initially played at the Old Hymerians ground at Haworth Park (capacity 1,200) until the 2008–09 season when they moved to their current home; the Ferens Ground located at Chanterlands Avenue. The club has progressed up the rugby union pyramid, beginning life in the old North East 2, and won promotion to National League 2 North in 2009. In 2009 a women's team was founded and the women and girls section is continuously growing. [1]

In 2015, after six seasons in National League 2 North, Hull were relegated to the northern regional leagues. [2] In 2019 the club won the North Premier (tier 5) league title for the first time, making a return to National League 2 North [3] and in 2022 the club were champions of National League 2 North, winning promotion to National League 1. This was the first time the club had reached the national level of the English club game.

Ground

The Ferens Ground is next to Hull Sports Centre, on Chanterlands Avenue, about 2.5 miles from Hull Paragon Interchange and the city centre, with parking available both in and around the ground. Capacity is around 1,500, most of which is standing but there is also seating for up to 288. [4]

Regional 1 Midlands is a level five semi-professional league in the English rugby union system. It is one of six leagues at this level. When this division began in 1987 it was known as Midlands Division 1. The format of the league was changed at the beginning of the 2009–10 season following a reorganisation by the Rugby Football Union (RFU), and the name change from National League 3 to Premier was introduced for the 2017–18 season by the RFU in order to lessen confusion for what is a series of regional leagues. Regional 1 Midlands is the highest regional rugby union league in the English Midlands.

Counties 2 Yorkshire, previously known as Yorkshire 2 is an English rugby union league at the eighth tier of the domestic competition for teams from Yorkshire. Club rugby in Yorkshire operates without promotion play-offs meaning that the top two teams are automatically promoted to Counties 1 Yorkshire and the bottom two teams are relegated to Counties 3 Yorkshire. Each season a team from Yorkshire 2 is picked to take part in the RFU Senior Vase - a national competition for clubs at level 8.

Bury St Edmunds RUFC is a rugby union club based in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. Founded in 1925 as Bury and West Suffolk Rugby Football Club, the men's 1st XV currently play in the fourth tier of the English league system, National League 2 East. The club has four senior men's sides, and a women's side as well who play in the 3rd tier of the RFU system, Championship Midlands 2.

The Yorkshire Rugby Football Union is the governing body responsible for rugby union in the historic county of Yorkshire, England. It is one of the constituent bodies of the national Rugby Football Union having formed in 1869, the union was formerly called Yorkshire County Club.

The 2014–15 National League 2 North is the sixth season of the fourth tier of the English domestic rugby union competitions since the professionalised format of the second division was introduced. New teams to the division include Hull Ionians, Broadstreet, Huddersfield and Stockport. Ampthill was also transferred back to the division after spending the 2013–14 season in National League 2 South. At the end of the season the champions are promoted to National League 1 while the second placed team will play against the runners-up from the 2014–15 National League 2 South, with the winner also promoted. The bottom three teams, depending on geographical location, are usually relegated to either National League 3 North or National League 3 Midlands.

Terry Garnett is a former rugby union player who played as a flanker or hooker for Hull and East Riding, Wakefield, Rotherham, Yorkshire and the North of England. He also represented an England XV in the RF Oakes memorial game.
