History

Palink was founded by Belgian brothers George, Oliver and Nicolas Ortiz. [2] The first store was opened in 1992 in Vilnius, Lithuania. [3]

In 2005, Palink opened its first store in Riga, Latvia.

In 2014, Palink sold all IKI stores in Latvia (51 stores) to local company Mego, stating that Palink is not interested in investing in Latvia anymore. IKI was 5th largest supermarket chain in Latvia. [4] [5]

The company currently operates over 240 "Iki", "Iki Cento" and "Iki Express" stores in more than 70 cities and is the second-largest retail grocer in Lithuania. [6]

In 2016, the Iki Cento brand of stores was discontinued. [7]

In mid-March 2018, Rimi Lietuva submitted nominations of potential buyers to the Competition Council. The council did not support them, on the grounds that these buyers "would not provide stable and at least as effective competition" as the current company provides until the transaction is implemented. In April, the Competition Council announced that the sale of Iki to Rimi was terminated. [8]

In July 2018, the German company REWE increased its stake in Palink to 93.75% of the capital. [9] [10] [11] The second owner was E. Leclerc group Unilec.

In 2021, Palink made acquisition of the "LastMile" delivery service. [12]

Palink was renamed to IKI Lietuva on 2 September 2022. [12]

Several Soviet OMON assaults on Lithuanian border posts occurred after Lithuania declared its independence from the Soviet Union on 11 March 1990. As a Soviet republic, the Lithuanian SSR did not have a state border with customs or checkpoints. The newly declared Republic of Lithuania began establishing the State Border Guard Service, before it was internationally recognized on 27 August 1991 by the states of the European Community. These posts also became a symbol of its struggle for independence. The Soviet government viewed the customs posts as illegal and sent the OMON troops to harass the posts, especially those along the eastern border with Byelorussian SSR. The unarmed customs officers and armed policemen were intimidated, beaten or killed, their cars were stolen or bombed, the posts were burned down or wrecked, and work of the checkpoints was otherwise disrupted. Two of the incidents resulted in the deaths of a total of eight Lithuanian citizens. In total, about 60 officers were attacked and injured, and 23 border posts were burned or destroyed.
