Ian David Luder CBE JP (born 13 April 1951) [1] was the 681st Lord Mayor of London,serving from 2008 to 2009.
Born into a Jewish family as the son of a mathematics teacher, [2] Luder attended The Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School,Elstree before reading Economics and Economic History at University College London (BA). He then worked as a tax accountant for Arthur Andersen and later Grant Thornton. [3] He regularly comments on tax matters and helped to found the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers, [4] and is a liveryman of the Coopers' Company. He entered local government as a Labour councillor on Bedford Borough Council,serving for 23 years from 1976 to 1999. [1] [5] Luder also stood for Parliament as the Labour candidate for Yeovil in 1979.
Luder was Aldermanic Sheriff of London for 2007–08 and was elected Lord Mayor on 29 September 2008,taking office in the "Silent Ceremony" on 7 November. [4] He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours. [6]
In 2008,Luder and his wife were involved in a dispute with their neighbours over the neighbours' cat. Apparently the Luders had refused their neighbours' request to stop feeding the animal,who was overweight and had a heart condition,and in fact had shut the cat in their home for 36 hours while they were away. [7]
On 28 March 2012,Luder was announced as the new chairman of Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He took up the post on 1 July that year. Shortly after his selection in January 2015 as a UKIP candidate for the 2015 general election,Luder stood down as Trust chairman. [8]
In December 2014,Luder was one of five people on the shortlist to become United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) candidate for the constituency of South Basildon and East Thurrock at the 2015 general election. At the initial selection meeting he was not chosen as the candidate. [9] Shortly afterwards,the successful candidate,Kerry Smith,resigned as UKIP's nominee for the seat after he was recorded making offensive remarks about fellow party members in a telephone conversation. A new selection was held in January 2015,which Luder won. [10] Luder contested the general election and came second,polling 12,097 votes (26.5% of the total),7,692 votes behind the incumbent Conservative candidate,Stephen Metcalfe. Smith polled 401 votes and finished in fifth place. [11]

Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provided healthcare for people in south west Essex,in the East of England. There were two hospitals in the trust,a specialist cardiothoracic centre and one clinical centre:Basildon University Hospital,Orsett Hospital,The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre and Billericay St. Andrew's Centre. It became a Foundation Trust in 2004.

Timür Mark "Tim" Aker is a British politician who was a Member of the European Parliament for the East of England region. He was elected as a UK Independence Party (UKIP) candidate in 2014. He was head of UKIP's Policy Unit from August 2013 to January 2015,and was UKIP's candidate for the Thurrock constituency in the 2015 general election,coming third in a close 3-way election. Aker left UKIP and joined the Thurrock Independents where he also successfully sought election a councillor in 2018,before later joining the Brexit Party.
The 2014 Basildon District Council election took place on 22 May 2014 to elect members of Basildon District Council in England. This was on the same day as other local elections and elections to the European Parliament. This election was to elect one third of the council,plus one additional seat which was vacant. These seats were last up for election in 2010.

The 2021 London Assembly election was held on 6 May 2021 to elect the members of the London Assembly,alongside the 2021 London mayoral election. The mayoral and Assembly elections were originally to be held on 7 May 2020,but on 13 March 2020 it was announced the election would be postponed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the sixth election since the Assembly was established in 2000. Due to the previous term being extended to 5 years,those elected would only serve a three-year term until the next election in 2024. The election was held on the same day in 2021 as other elections in the UK;the UK local elections,Scottish Parliament election,and Welsh Senedd election.
The inaugural West of England mayoral election was held on 4 May 2017 to elect the Mayor of the West of England metropolitan area. The area is made up of Bath and North East Somerset,Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Subsequent elections will be held every four years. The election was won by Conservative Tim Bowles. The overall turnout for the election was low,with only 29.7% of the electorate voting.
The 2018 Thurrock Council elections took place on 3 May 2018 to elect members of Thurrock Council in England. Councillors in 16 out of the 20 electoral wards were to be up for election. The council remained under no overall control,with a minority Conservative administration running the council.
