Ice hockey in Israel started as a minor sport. Until the construction of the new arena in Holon, many Israeli hockey players were members of the Canada Israel Hockey School (since renamed the "Hockey Academy of Israel") housed at the Canada Centre in Metulla. [1]
Ice Hockey has been played in Israel since 1986 when Israel's first ice rink opened in Kiryat Motzkin. In 1988 after the second rink opened in Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv, the Israel Ice Hockey and Figure Skating Association was founded in 1988 by immigrants from Canada , America, Europe and the former Soviet Union. Israel joined the International Ice Hockey Federation in 1991 and first participated in an IIHF world championships in 1992. During the 1990s there was a large influx of Russian immigrants to Israel, some of whom were professional ice hockey players. Boris Mindel, one of these immigrants, established a junior program at the Canada Centre in Metulla, in northern Israel. [2]
Roger Neilson, former coach in the National Hockey League, helped to create summer ice hockey camps in Metulla in 1998. [3]
The Canada Israel Hockey School (recently renamed the Hockey Academy of Israel) runs a recreational program at the Canada Centre that is open to youngsters of all faiths. In 2014, it had an enrollment of 450 Jewish and Arab youngsters. In 2014, forty players were Alawites from Ghajar on the Lebanese border. [1]
The Ice Hockey Federation of Israel is recognized as the governing body of Ice Hockey in Israel by the Ministry of Education's Sports Authority. [4]
The Israeli League is the top tier hockey league in Israel. It was founded in 1990 with 6 teams.
Currently (2019) the Senior-A top division consists of 12 teams, divided into upper and lower group, from 10 major clubs: [5]
The IcePeaks arena in Holon created a major impact on the number of senior teams in Israel.
The Israel national ice hockey team has been a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation since 1 May 1991. The men's team is currently ranked 34th, and the women's team is not ranked. [6] As of April 2017 Israel had 901 total players: 345 Male, 513 Junior and 43 females. Additionally they have 29 referees and 4 indoor rinks. [7]
The national team, in the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division II Group B, won the gold medal. As a result, the team was promoted to Division II Group A. [8] In 5 games played they were able to defeat China, Turkey, New Zealand and Bulgaria while suffering their only loss to Mexico. [9]
In 1997, during the 15th Maccabiah Games Ice Hockey was included for the first time, with Team Canada winning the inaugural gold medal. Once again in 2013, Ice Hockey joined for the 19th Maccabiah Games as an official sport. [10]
Funding was extremely low for the Ice Hockey team and the sport was nearly removed from the games. Owners of 6 NHL teams (Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks, Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning) funded the sports, enabling it to officially join for the first time. [11]
Several NHL team owners also helped fund the hockey program in the 20th Maccabiah games in 2017, in which three tournaments took place – an open tournament, a junior one (for players up to 18 years of age), and a senior one (for players 40 years of age and over). For the sake of the tournament, a temporary full-size rink was established at the Pais Arena basketball hall in Jerusalem. The capacity of the arena (10000 for hockey) and its proximity to population centers in Israel made the tournament an attraction for thousands of fans, with the final game of the open tournament, in which Canada beat the United States 7:2, attracting an attendance of 7000 and becoming the highest attended hockey game in history on Israeli soil.
Currently there are two main rinks in full-time ice hockey use in Israel. Canada Centre in Israel is the original and biggest ice hockey arena in Israel. [12] In 2010 it was announced that Israel would be getting their second rink, in Eilat. [13] The Ice Park & Mall Eilat offers a full ice rink on the main floor, along with other entertainment features, and a full mall on the upper level, [14] but that rink is not equipped for hockey and hockey activity does not take place there. Additionally a third, smaller rink, is located in Ma'alot, [15] and another one in Holon. The rink in Hollon which is a smaller rink is used constantly for the Leagues Games run by the Federation. An Olympic size rink is in the process of being built with a hope to open in 2023.There is another rink which opened in 2018 called OneIce which is situated in Tnuvot.
The Canadian Friends of the Israel Ice Hockey Federation was founded in 1991 by David Lisbona and Larry Markowitz. After meeting immigrant and Canadian ex-pat Paul Shindman, the founder of the IIHFSA, Lisbona and Markowitz set up the Canadian Friends in order to provide skates and equipment, and help popularize the sport in Israel. It now focuses all of its efforts on the Canada-Israel Hockey School program. While it is based out of Montreal, there are other collection efforts throughout the country, primarily in Ottawa. The organization has an affiliation with the Hockey without Borders program [16]
In December 2017, the organization collected and sent hundreds of jockstraps to Israel. [17]
The Ice Hockey World Championships are an annual international men's ice hockey tournament organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). First officially held at the 1920 Summer Olympics. The IIHF was created in 1908 while the European Championships, the precursor to the World Championships, were first held in 1910. The tournament held at the 1920 Summer Olympics is recognized as the first Ice Hockey World Championship. From 1920 to 1968, the Olympic hockey tournament was also considered the World Championship for that year.
The Israel Ice Hockey Federation is recognized as the governing body for amateur ice hockey in Israel and is a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). It is often called the Ice Hockey Federation of Israel in order to differentiate it from the IIHF.
The 2007 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships was the 2007 edition of the Ice Hockey World Junior Championship and was held in Mora and Leksand, Sweden between December 26, 2006 and January 5, 2007. The venues were FM Mattsson Arena in Mora, and Ejendals Arena in Leksand. The total attendance was a significant drop off from the 325,000-plus visitors at the previous World Juniors in British Columbia, Canada.
The 2001 IIHF World U20 Championship, commonly referred to as the 2001 World Junior Hockey Championships, was the 25th edition of the Ice Hockey World Junior Championship. The tournament was held in Moscow and Podolsk, Russia from December 26, 2000 to January 5, 2001. The Czech Republic won the gold medal for the second consecutive year with a 2–1 victory over Finland in the championship game, while Canada won the bronze medal with a 2–1 overtime victory over Sweden.
The Bolshoy Ice Dome is a multi-purpose indoor arena located in Olympic Park, Sochi, Russia. Opened in 2012, the 12,000-seat arena was primarily constructed to host hockey competitions during the 2014 Winter Olympics. Following the Games, it became the home arena of HC Sochi, an expansion team of the KHL. The arena has also hosted concerts and other events. Prior to the Games, the arena hosted the IIHF World U18 Championships and Channel One Cup in 2013.
Hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics was held at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, home of the National Hockey League's Vancouver Canucks, and at UBC Winter Sports Centre, home of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport's UBC Thunderbirds. Twelve teams competed in the men's event and eight teams competed in the women's event. Canada won both tournaments with victories against the United States, while Finland won both bronze games, however against different opponents.
The 1999 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships was held in Winnipeg, and five other communities in Manitoba, Canada from December 26, 1998, to January 5, 1999. In the gold medal match at Winnipeg Arena, Russia defeated Canada 3–2 on Artem Chubarov's overtime goal. The bronze medal was claimed by Slovakia, giving the six-year-old country its first medal at an IIHF event.
The Victoria Cup was series of games played between professional ice hockey teams from Europe and the North American National Hockey League (NHL). The event was held twice, in 2008 and 2009.
The Turkish Ice Hockey Super League is the highest level of professional ice hockey in Turkey. It is operated under the jurisdiction of the Turkish Ice Hockey Federation, a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation. Unlike the National Hockey League, the Super League is not divided into conferences; teams compete in a single division. The league currently consists of six teams, from two cities.
On March 3, 1875, the first recorded indoor ice hockey game took place at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal, Quebec. Organized by James Creighton, who captained one of the teams, the game was between two nine-member teams, using a rubber "puck". Members used skates and sticks used for outdoor hockey and shinny games in Nova Scotia, where Creighton was born and raised. It is recognized as the first organized ice hockey game.
The Icehouse is an Australian ice sports and entertainment centre, located in the Docklands precinct of Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia. It is open to the public 7 days a week and offers an extensive range of educational ice-skating classes for customers, as well as pathways to ice sports.
Kirovs Lipmans is a Latvian business person and former ice hockey executive. He served as president of the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation from 1994 to 1995, and from 1998 to 2016; was a member of the Latvian Olympic Committee executive, and sat on International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) committees. He oversaw the increase of artificial ice hockey rinks in Latvia from three to seventeen, and the Latvia men's national team qualify for the top tier of the World Championships then play in four consecutive Olympic hockey tournaments. Lipmans oversaw the construction of Arena Riga for the hosting the 2006 IIHF World Championship, and Latvia was awarded co-hosting duties for the 2021 IIHF World Championship at the end of his presidency.
The Qatari national ice hockey team is the national men's ice hockey team of Qatar. They are controlled by the Qatar Winter Sports Committee and has been a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) since 18 May 2012. Qatar is currently not ranked in the IIHF World Ranking and have not entered in any World Championship tournaments or at any Olympic Games, but have only played once in the Challenge Cup of Asia Division I tournament in 2016, a regional tournament for lower-tier hockey nations in Asia.
The 2017 IIHF World Championship, the 2017 edition of the annual Ice Hockey World Championships, was held from 5 to 21 May 2017 in Cologne, Germany and Paris, France. The official tournament mascots were Asterix and Obelix, the main characters from popular French comic book series The Adventures of Asterix. The logo incorporates the silhouette of deceased German national team goaltender Robert Müller, who succumbed to a brain tumor at just 28 years of age. German tennis player Angelique Kerber, 1. FC Köln and German Olympic soccer team goalkeeper Timo Horn and Paris Saint-Germain F.C.'s Brazilian winger Lucas Moura were named celebrity ambassadors for the event.

Greece became an IIHF member in 1987 and participated in five IIHF tournaments from 1991 to 1999.
HC Bat Yam is an Israeli ice hockey team based in Bat Yam that competes in the Israeli League. HC Bat Yam was founded in 1992 and won their first league title in 1995. In 2010, the club qualified for their first IIHF Continental Cup, however they were knocked out in the first round without winning a game. HC Bat Yam won their second title in 2016 and as a result qualified for the 2016–17 IIHF Continental Cup.
The Philippines national ice hockey team is the national men's ice hockey team of the Philippines. They are controlled by the Federation of Ice Hockey League (FIHL) and a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) since May 20, 2016. Prior to that period, a national team has played in regional tournaments in Hong Kong since the 2000s.
The 2017 IIHF Inline Hockey World Championship Division I was an international inline hockey tournament run by the International Ice Hockey Federation. The Division I tournament ran alongside the 2017 IIHF Inline Hockey World Championship tournament and took place between 25 June and 1 July 2017 in Bratislava, Slovakia at the Ondrej Nepela Arena Rink 2 and Ondrej Nepela Arena. The tournament was won by Slovenia who upon winning gained promotion to the 2019 IIHF Inline Hockey World Championship. While New Zealand and Brazil were relegated to the Qualifications after losing their placement round games along with Hungary who lost the relegation game against Argentina.
