Idris Goodwin is a North American playwright, rapper, essayist, and poet. In July 2022, Idris Goodwin became the third Artistic Director of Seattle Children's Theatre. [1]
Idris Goodwin was born in Detroit, Michigan. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Film, Video, and Screenwriting at Columbia College Chicago. Goodwin received his Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He did graduate work at the University of Iowa Playwrights Workshop.
The first play Goodwin ever wrote was titled Braising in 2001, and was performed in the back of a coffee shop. Goodwin recalls that the play was "thrown together and done on a budget… and miraculously we got a great review." [2]
Since then he has written and had several successful plays produced such as And in This Corner… Cassius Clay (2016), which received the 2017 Distinguished Play Award from The American Association of Theater and Education
And inThis Corner... Cassius Clay (2016) was commissioned by Stage One Family Theater in Louisville, Kentucky, in partnership with the Muhammad Ali Center. During Metro Theater Company's follow up production, they initiated The Cassius Project, which included a website with details of Ali's life, juxtaposing it with major points of the civil rights movement.
How We Got On (2013), was developed at the Eugene O'Neill Playwriting Conference and premiered in the Actors Theater's 2012 Humana Festival and was also nominated for an ATCA Steinberg New Play Award.
Goodwin has earned awards from the Hip Hop Theater festival, The Illinois Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ford Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the Edgerton Foundation. In 2017, Goodwin won the Blue Ink Playwriting Award for HYPE MAN:a break beat play. The play takes place in wake of a controversial police shooting and it was selected as the winner in a pool of 543 submissions. [3] HYPE MAN received its world premiere at Company One in 2018. It won the Elliot Norton Award for Best New Play that same year. Numerous theatres across the country produced Hype Man through 2018 and 2019 including, The Flea Theater and The Fountain Theatre.
Goodwin lectures at colleges, high schools/middle schools, and other venues all throughout the United States. He also credits playwright Lorraine Hansberry, playwright August Wilson, and Chuck D of Public Enemy as inspirations for his work. [2]
Goodwin has been featured on Def Poetry Jam, and was part of the cast on the documentary film What's On Your Plate (2009), a narrative about two eleven-year-old African-American exploring their place in society. He also performed on PBS’s Sesame Street, and for National Public Radio. [4] He is also featured in the 2010 Youth Poetry documentary Louder Than a Bomb.
Write Bloody Books published "These are the Breaks" Goodwin's collection of essays and poems in 2011. The collection of essays was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in the same year. It was in this book, along with his 2010 album Break Beat Poems that Goodwin coined the term Break Beat Poetry.
In May 2020, Idris Goodwin became the Director of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College [5]
He currently serves as the Artistic Director of Seattle Children's Theater [6]

Kwame Kwei-Armah is a British actor, playwright, director and broadcaster. In 2005, Kwei-Armah became the second black Briton to have a play staged in the West End of London when his award-winning piece Elmina's Kitchen transferred to the Garrick Theatre. He was the first black Briton to head a major British national theater, when he took the directorship of the Young Vic in 2018. Kwei-Armah was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2012 Birthday Honours for services to drama.

Franco D'Alessandro is a New York-born playwright, poet, author, and educator. In the mid 1990s, he had eight one-act plays produced Off-Off Broadway in five years. The American playwright has had twenty-two international, Off-Broadway, and regional productions of his work and has been published or produced in eight languages over 11 countries on four continents. His Off-Broadway hit play Roman Nights explores the tumultuous lives of stage and screen legends Anna Magnani and Tennessee Williams. This play was a critical and commercial success in New York (2002) and London (2004); various productions of the play have been touring much of the world ever since, including a two-year run in South America and 15-year run in the Czech Republic and Eastern Europe. The play has been running somewhere on the globe every year for 20 years and has been nominated for and/or received various awards the world over. More recently, he has made local headlines in Westchester County, where, according to reports, in his role as a teacher, he was engaged in inappropriate communications with his students (minors) outside of the classroom.

Eduardo Oscar Machado is a Cuban playwright living in the United States. Notable plays by Machado include Broken Eggs, Havana is Waiting and The Cook. Many of his plays are autobiographical or deal with Cuba in some way. Machado teaches playwriting at New York University. He has served as the artistic director of the INTAR Theatre in New York City since 2004. He is openly gay.

Since then his plays have been produced and presented internationally and published in half a dozen anthologies.

The Seattle Children's Theatre (SCT) is a resident theatre for young audiences in Seattle, Washington, founded in 1975. Its main performances are at the Seattle Center in a 482-seat and a 275-seat theatre, and its main theater runs from June through September. SCT also has a drama school with its own performances during the summer, connecting education and the arts.

Karen Zacarías is an American playwright. She is known for her play Mariela in the Desert. It was the winner of the National Latino Playwriting Award and a finalist for other prizes. Mariela in the Desert was debuted at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. Zacarías is the founder of the Young Playwrights' Theater located in Washington, D.C.
Kristiana Rae Colón is an American poet, playwright, actor, educator, Cave Canem Fellow, creator of #BlackSexMatters and co-founder of the #LetUsBreathe Collective. She was awarded 2017 Best Black Playwright by The Black Mall. Her plays have premiered in Chicago, New York, London, and other cities. Colón is the author of several plays and poems. She earned the 2013 Drinking Gourd Poetry Prize. Her play, Octagon, won Colón the Arizona Theatre Company 2014 National Latino Playwriting Award. Kristiana's writing, producing, and organizing work to radically reimagine power structures, our complicity in them, and visions for liberation.
Aleshea Harris is an American playwright, spoken word artist, author, educator, actor, performer, and screenwriter. Her play Is God Is won the American Playwriting Foundation's Relentless Award in 2016. In 2023, her play On Sugarland was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
