Ijeoma Akunyili (also known as Ije Akunyili) is a Nigerian American medical practitioner.

Education

She graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in literature. She had a Masters of Public Administration from Harvard then went on to work as a Junior Professional Associate for the World Bank. [1] She attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine. [2] She had her emergency medicine residency at the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. [3]

Career

Ijeoma was the regional medical director for TeamHealth's Northeast Group where she managed the operations of nearly 20 emergency departments, critical care, and hospitalist service lines in New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania and New York. [4] [5] She had also served as the chair of emergency medicine at Waterbury Hospital. [6] She is the current President of the Connecticut College of Emergency Physicians. [7]

On January 11, 2023, Jersey City Medical Center announced the appointment of Ijeoma as their Chief Medical Officer becoming the hospital's first Black Chief Medical Officer.

Personal life

She is married to Aris Brou with two children. [9] Ije is the first daughter of Dr. Chike Akunyili [10] and Dora Akunyili, former director-general of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control. [11]

<i>Ije Awele</i> 2022 drama film

Ije Awele is a 2022 Nigerian drama film directed by Emeka Ojukwu and executive produced by Emeka Nwokocha. It stars Victoria Nwogu, Onyeka Onwenu, Jide-Kene Achufusi, Seun Ajayi, Keppy Ekpeyong, Ngozi Nwosu, Ejike Asiegbu and Esther Uzodinma. It is a story about an abuse survivor molested by her father, she finds out in her later years that her mother has known all the while and has been giving her contraceptives, covering up for her father in order to save the family name. This leaves her feeling betrayed, even when she finds love.
