The International Association of Exorcists (Italian: Associazione internazionale degli esorcisti), abbreviated as AIE, is a Roman Catholic organization which was founded in 1990 by six priests including the world-famous exorcist of Rome, Father Gabriele Amorth and Father Jeremy Davies. [1] Its statutes were approved by the Catholic Church on June 13, 2014. [2] The AIE provides training and support to exorcists, and also helps to raise awareness of the issue of demonic possession. It has around 250 members from 30 countries. [3] Its members are all priests who have been authorized by their bishops to perform exorcisms. The organization is composed of mostly Catholic priests, as well as some Anglican and Orthodox priests. [4]

History

Although the membership is restricted and exclusive, by 2000 there were over two hundred members, who meet bi-annually in Rome. The association sends out a quarterly newsletter where members can tell of particularly interesting or difficult cases. An exorcist priest must have the permission of his bishop to join the group.

Within the Roman Catholic Church a priest may only perform an exorcism with the express consent of his bishop or local ordinary, [5] and only, to the extent necessary, after an examination of the patient by doctors and psychiatrists in order to determine that the affliction has no natural origin. [6] A priest is required by canon law to be devout, knowledgeable, prudent, and respected for his integrity.

Father Amorth began the organization in the hopes of increasing the number of official exorcists worldwide and to alert more dioceses about the issue of the increasing number of demonic possessions, which he believed had been ignored or suppressed by some priests and bishops. During his lifetime, Father Amorth was the honorary president of AIE. His successor as president was Father Giancarlo Gramolazzo, who died in November 2010 and was succeeded in turn by Capuchin Father Cipriano de Meo (born January 5, 1924), Fr. Francesco Bamonte, and then by Msgr.Karel Orlita the current president. [7]

The 14-year-old boy was alleged to be a victim of demonic possession, and the events were recorded by the attending priest, Raymond J. Bishop. Subsequent supernatural claims surrounding the events were used as elements in William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel The Exorcist. In December 2021, The Skeptical Inquirer reported the purported true identity of Roland Doe/Robbie Mannheim as Ronald Edwin Hunkeler.

John Todd Zuhlsdorf, also known as Father Z, is an American traditionalist Catholic priest known for his blogging activities. Incardinated in the Diocese of Velletri-Segni, he lived and worked in the Diocese of Madison from 2014 to 2021, broadcasting a daily Tridentine Mass and issuing commentary on individuals and events from a traditionalist Catholic perspective.

Father Lampert was appointed to become an exorcist by Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlien. He is one of the few exorcists known to use social media like Twitter (@FrVinceLampert) on a regular basis. In one article he told the reporter that he is fighting the devil by tweeting about exorcism.

Prey for the Devil is a 2022 American supernatural horror film about a nun who trains as an exorcist under the Roman Catholic Church and confronts demonic possession. The film is produced under the studio Lionsgate and is directed by Daniel Stamm. It stars Jacqueline Byers, Colin Salmon, Christian Navarro, Lisa Palfrey, Nicholas Ralph, Virginia Madsen, and Ben Cross. Lionsgate distributed Prey for the Devil in theaters in the United States and Canada on October 28, 2022. The film received negative reviews from critics and grossed $44.7 million worldwide.

<i>The Popes Exorcist</i> 2023 film by Julius Avery

The Pope's Exorcist is a 2023 supernatural horror film directed by Julius Avery from a screenplay by Michael Petroni and Evan Spiliotopoulos, based on the 1990 book An Exorcist Tells His Story and the 1992 book An Exorcist: More Stories by Father Gabriele Amorth. The film stars Russell Crowe as Amorth, with Daniel Zovatto, Alex Essoe, and Franco Nero in supporting roles.

Jose Francisco "Jocis" Syquia is a Filipino Roman Catholic exorcist. He is the director of the Archdiocese of Manila Office on Exorcism.
