International Society for the History of Pharmacy

The International Society for the History of Pharmacy (ISHP) is a non profit international society devoted to the academic study of the history of pharmacy. The umbrella organization of 29 national societies promotes research, teaching and publication in pharmaceutical history. It regularly organizes congresses and awards a research grant every two years. Publication organs are an annual newsletter and the peer-reviewed journal Pharmaceutical Historian, which is published in cooperation with the British Society for the History of Pharmacy. [1]

History

On August 18, 1926, Otto Raubenheimer from the US, the Austrian Ludwig Winkler and the Germans Fritz Ferchl, Georg Urdang, Walther Zimmermann, founded the Gesellschaft für Geschichte der Pharmazie (Society for the History of Pharmacy) in Innsbruck, Austria [2] The Second World War interrupted the society's activities but after that it reformed and in 1949 gave itself the name Internationale Gesellschaft für Geschichte der Pharmazie [3] and also appears under equivalent English- or French-language names: International Society for the History of Pharmacy or Société Internationale d'Histoire de la Pharmacie.

International congresses

The society holds a biennial International Congress. These congresses are an open platform for research presentations and also discussions about history of pharmacy in an truly international context.

The history of pharmacy as a modern and independent science dates back to the first third of the 19th century. Before then, pharmacy evolved from antiquity as part of medicine. The history of pharmacy coincides well with the history of medicine, but it's important that there is a distinction between the two topics. Pharmaceuticals is one of the most-researched fields in the academic industry, but the history surrounding that particular topic is sparse compared to the impact its made world-wide. Before the advent of pharmacists, there existed apothecaries that worked alongside priests and physicians in regard to patient care.

The International Society for Alpine History promotes research on the history of the European Alps and publishes an annual Journal. The Laboratorio de Storia delle Alpi at the Università della Svizzera italiana is the secretariat of the Society and develops its own scholarly agenda.

The Archiv der Pharmazie is a monthly peer-reviewed scientific journal covering all aspects of chemistry in the life sciences. The journal was established in 1822 and is published by Wiley-VCH on behalf of the Deutsche Pharmazeutische Gesellschaft. Until 2019, the editor-in-chief was Holger Stark. He was succeeded in 2020 by Andreas Link.
