The International Transpersonal Association (ITA) is membership organization in the field of Transpersonal studies.

History

The organization was founded in 1978 by Stanislav Grof, Michael Murphy and Richard Price [1] [2] In 1980 the association was incorporated, in California, as an organization promoting transpersonal education and scientific research. [2] By 1985 the association was based in San Diego and had, by then, hosted a number of international transpersonal conferences. [3] [4] [2]

In 2004 the organization was dissolved, but later re-incorporated. The new ITA was corporated in may 2008. [2]

Representatives of the organization was among the contributors to the Wiley Blackwell Handbook of Transpersonal Psychology (2nd Edition.) [5]

Publications

The association publishes the International Journal of Transpersonal Studies . The journal is sponsored by the California Institute of Integral Studies.

Ken Wilber American writer and public speaker

Kenneth Earl Wilber II is an American philosopher and writer on transpersonal psychology and his own integral theory, a systematic philosophy which suggests the synthesis of all human knowledge and experience.

An altered state of consciousness (ASC), also called altered state of mind or mind alteration, is any condition which is significantly different from a normal waking state. By 1892, the expression was in use in relation to hypnosis, though there is an ongoing debate as to whether hypnosis is to be identified as an ASC according to its modern definition. The next retrievable instance, by Dr Max Mailhouse from his 1904 presentation to conference, however, is unequivocally identified as such, as it was in relation to epilepsy, and is still used today. In academia, the expression was used as early as 1966 by Arnold M. Ludwig and brought into common usage from 1969 by Charles Tart. It describes induced changes in one's mental state, almost always temporary. A synonymous phrase is "altered state of awareness".

Abraham Maslow American psychologist

Abraham Harold Maslow was an American psychologist who was best known for creating Maslow's hierarchy of needs, a theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling innate human needs in priority, culminating in self-actualization. Maslow was a psychology professor at Alliant International University, Brandeis University, Brooklyn College, New School for Social Research, and Columbia University. He stressed the importance of focusing on the positive qualities in people, as opposed to treating them as a "bag of symptoms". A Review of General Psychology survey, published in 2002, ranked Maslow as the tenth most cited psychologist of the 20th century.

Transpersonal psychology, or spiritual psychology, is a sub-field or school of psychology that integrates the spiritual and transcendent aspects of the human experience with the framework of modern psychology. The transpersonal is defined as "experiences in which the sense of identity or self extends beyond (trans) the individual or personal to encompass wider aspects of humankind, life, psyche or cosmos". It has also been defined as "development beyond conventional, personal or individual levels".

Stanislav Grof

Stanislav Grof, also known as Stan Grof, is a Czech-born psychiatrist who has been living in the United States from the 1960s. Grof is one of the principal developers of transpersonal psychology and research into the use of non-ordinary states of consciousness for purposes of exploring, healing, and obtaining growth and insights into the human psyche. Grof received the VISION 97 award granted by the Foundation of Dagmar and Václav Havel in Prague on October 5, 2007.

James G. March

James Gardner March was an American Political Scientist. A professor at Stanford University in the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Stanford Graduate School of Education, he is best known for his research on organizations, his seminal work on A Behavioral Theory of the Firm, and the organizational decision making model known as the Garbage Can Model.

Arnold Mindell

Arnold Mindell is an American author, therapist and teacher in the fields of transpersonal psychology, body psychotherapy, social change and spirituality. He is known for extending Jungian dream analysis to body symptoms, promoting ideas of ‘deep democracy,’ and interpreting concepts from physics and mathematics in psychological terms. Mindell is the founder of process oriented psychology, also called Process Work, a development of Jungian psychology influenced by Taoism, shamanism and physics.

California Institute of Integral Studies

California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) is a private, non-profit university founded in 1968 and based in San Francisco, California. As of 2020, it operates in two locations; the main campus near the confluence of the Civic Center, SoMa, and Mission districts, and another campus for the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the Potrero Hill neighborhood. CIIS has a total of 1,510 students and 80 core faculty members.

The transpersonal is a term used by different schools of philosophy and psychology in order to describe experiences and worldviews that extend beyond the personal level of the psyche, and beyond mundane worldly events.

Sofia University (California)

Sofia University is a private for-profit university in Palo Alto, California. It was originally founded as the California Institute of Transpersonal Psychology by Robert Frager and James Fadiman in 1975.

Jorge N. Ferrer is a US-based Spanish psychologist and participatory thinker, best known for his work bridging participatory theory with transpersonal psychology, religious studies, integral education, and sexuality and intimate relationships. Ferrer is a professor of psychology at California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), San Francisco, where he served as chair of the department of East-West Psychology.

Richard Tarnas Philosopher and cultural historian

Richard Theodore Tarnas is a cultural historian known for his books The Passion of the Western Mind: Understanding the Ideas That Have Shaped Our World View and Cosmos and Psyche: Intimations of a New World View. Tarnas is professor of philosophy and psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and is the founding director of its graduate program in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness.

Transpersonal anthropology is a subdiscipline of cultural anthropology and transpersonal studies. It studies the relationship between altered states of consciousness and culture.

Transpersonal psychiatry is an area of transpersonal studies that integrates the clinical and theoretical framework of modern psychiatry with the spiritual and philosophical worldview of the transpersonal. It is considered to be one of several transpersonal disciplines. The field is associated with the work of Bruce W. Scotton, David Lukoff and Francis Lu.

The Journal of Transpersonal Psychology (JTP) is a semi-annual, peer-reviewed academic journal which is published by the Association for Transpersonal Psychology. The journal is the principal publication in the field of Transpersonal psychology. According to sources the journal is addressing the interface between psychology and spirituality, and the area of spirituality as a legitimate topic for academic studies.

The Association for Transpersonal Psychology (ATP) is a membership-supported organization in the field of transpersonal psychology, founded in 1972. It grew out of the humanistic psychology and counterculture of the late 1960s. The organization has also contributed material to the PsycEXTRA® database. While the association was originally created with the main goal of supporting the publication of the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology (JTP), its mission and vision have evolved over time. The association is currently undergoing a multi-year organizational transformation to better implement its mission of "Inspiring individual, societal, and global transformation." Both ATP and JTP are divisions of the Transpersonal Institute (TI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Allan Combs American consciousness theorist

Allan Combs is an American consciousness theorist who studies the complexity of the mind. Biologist, theoretical neuroscientist and philosopher Walter Jackson Freeman III, wrote of Combs: [His work] "transcends the fading antimony of The Two Cultures and demonstrates the unity of human knowledge in his synthesis of modern brain dynamics with a broad sweep of history and mythology. It is a stunning achievement."
