Iron Fist is an Indian Air Force exercise held at Pokhran, Rajasthan. It has been held twice: 2013 and 2016.

Iron Fist 2013

The Iron Fist 2013 was the Indian Air Force's first day-night exercise. [1] It was conducted on 22 February 2013 at the Pokhran firing range. The main objective was to display network-centric operations capabilities of the Indian Air Force. More than 100 aircraft (equal number of aircraft were at standby) and 30 different weapon platforms participated. Along with aircraft, National Security Guard and Garud commandos displayed their tactical skills. [2] [3] [4] [5] The final day of the exercises saw several dignitaries arrive to see a demonstration of capabilities including President of India, Prime Minister, Defence Minister, Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Chief of Indian Navy and several more. A four-hour live telecast of the event was broadcast by Doordarshan National.

Live telecast

The live telecast was an attempt by the IAF to showcase its capabilities. It was accompanied by music and live commentary describing the aircraft, capabilities, mission under progress, target, weapon details, pilot and crew names and also live footage from the cockpit.

The live telecast was divided into four phases.

The flypast was done with several aircraft to start the events of live exercise. It consisted of the following displays:

  1. 3 Mi-8 helicopters with the tricolor
  2. MiG-27 flying at 450 km/hour with Iron Fist 13 banner in tow
  3. Jaguar showing live footage of the main spectator stand from aircraft cameras
  4. Rejuvenated Tiger Moth
  5. Pilatus PC-7 Mk2 aerobics
  6. MiG-29 (Supersonic flypast)
  7. All 5 variants of MiG-21 in service with IAF in an Arrowhead formation
  8. 5 Jaguar aircraft in Arrowhead formation
  9. 5 Upgraded MiG-27 in Arrowhead formation
  10. 5 MiG-29 in Arrowhead formation
  11. Formation flight of Jaguar, MiG-21 Bison and MiG-27
  12. 3 Su-30 MKI in Vic formation
  13. HAL Cheetah + HAL Chetak + HAL Dhruv + HAL LCH
  14. Aerobatics by HAL LCH

The Exercise showcased offensive operations like destroying communication centers, runways, hangars, fuel & ammunition buildings, etc. deep behind enemy lines. Major Offensive demonstrations:

  1. Dive attack by Mirage 2000 after scouting of ground targets by Jaguar and IAI Herons
  2. Mig-21 Bison attacking ground target with 64 mm Rockets
  3. Su-30MKI dropping 1000 lb Guided bomb (Aborted)
  4. Mig-27 firing 40 mm Rockets on ground targets
  5. Su-30MKI firing runway penetrating bombs
  6. Jaguar demonstrating precision bombing
  7. Su-30MKI firing precision guided bombs
  8. Jaguar firing 3 x 1000 lb bombs
  9. HAL Tejas demonstrating swing role capability: an LGB on ground target quickly followed by an R-73 launch to shoot down a simulated interceptor
  1. MANPADS firing
  2. Garud Commandos carrying out a Search & Rescue mission from a Mi-17 escorted by Mi-35.
  3. OSA AK-M Surface to air firing
  4. Mi-35 firing 80 mm Rockets on ground targets
  5. BAe Hawk trainer aircraft two 125 kg bombs followed by 68 mm rockets
  6. MiG-21 fire S-24 (240 mm caliber) heavy rockets
  7. Su-30MKI fire 26 x 250 kg bombs demonstrating carpet bombing
  8. 2 C-130J deploy 60 paratroopers
  9. Mi-17 demonstrating quick slithering operation
  10. Mi-17 demonstrating deploying of a Fast Attack Vehicle with 5 Guards who conduct a surgical strike and return to the Mi-17 for quick escape
  11. IL-76 dropping heavy cargo with parachutes escorted by 2 Mig-29 who intercept and fire R-73 missile at an interceptor
  12. C-130J demonstrates an assault landing on a short field deploys 26 commandos and quickly takes off in about 1000 feet and flies away with complex maneuvering
  13. Mi-17 demonstrate fire control using slithered buckets

After these live weapons demonstrations, several aerobatics display and other events continued before commencing of Phase 4: Night Operations.

Targets were briefed before the firing commenced. All aircraft fired flares before deploying targets to enhance visibility. Following operations were carried out:

  1. An-32 modified to deploy weapons 10 x 1000 lb carpet bombing demonstration
  2. MiG-27UP firing S-24 heavy rockets
  3. Mirage-2000 firing dumb bombs
  4. MiG-27UP firing S-24 heavy rockets
  5. Jaguar firing 3 × 1000 lb bombs from 500 feet altitude
  6. Jaguar firing 4 × 1000 lb bombs in dive
  7. Su-30MKI firing 18 × 250 kg bombs (Aborted)
  8. Jaguar 4 × 1000 lb bombs
  9. Mi-17 Night Slither operation to drop Garud commandos under search light
  10. Pechora SAM-3 ripple firing to an airborne target at 10 km range
  11. Mi-35 firing S-24 heavy rockets fired with assistance of newly included NVG & FLIR avionics
  12. IL-78MKI firing 300 flares to announce end of Iron Fist 2013
  13. An-32 firing 50 flares

Iron Fist 2016 was held on 18 March 2016. It featured the participation of 181 aircraft, 103 of them fighter planes. It also included a display of the firepower of Tejas LCA for the first time. [6]

Mikoyan MiG-27 Series of Soviet attack aircraft

The Mikoyan MiG-27 is a variable-sweep ground-attack aircraft, originally built by the Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau in the Soviet Union and later licence-produced in India by Hindustan Aeronautics as the Bahadur ("Valiant"). It is based on the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23 fighter aircraft, but optimised for air-to-ground attack. Unlike the MiG-23, the MiG-27 did not have widespread use outside Russia, as most countries opted for the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23BN and Sukhoi Su-22 instead. It remains in service only with the Kazakh Air Forces in the ground attack role. All Russian, Indian, Sri Lankan and Ukrainian MiG-27s have been retired.

Indian Air Force Aerial service branch of the Indian Armed Forces

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the air arm of the Indian Armed Forces. Its complement of personnel and aircraft assets ranks fourth amongst the air forces of the world. Its primary mission is to secure Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare during armed conflict. It was officially established on 8 October 1932 as an auxiliary air force of the British Empire which honoured India's aviation service during World War II with the prefix Royal. After India gained independence from United Kingdom in 1947, the name Royal Indian Air Force was kept and served in the name of Dominion of India. With the government's transition to a Republic in 1950, the prefix Royal was removed.

Aero India

Aero India is a biennial air show and aviation exhibition held in Bengaluru, India at the Yelahanka Air Force Station. It is organised by the Defence Exhibition Organisation, Ministry of Defence.

Astra (missile) Beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile

Astra is an Indian all weather beyond-visual-range active radar homing air-to-air missile, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation. It is the first air-to-air missile developed by India. Astra is designed to be capable of engaging targets at varying range and altitudes allowing for engagement of both short-range targets at a distance of 10 km (6.2 mi) and long-range targets up to a distance of 110 km (68 mi). Astra has been integrated with Indian Air Force's Sukhoi Su-30MKI and will be integrated with Dassault Mirage 2000, HAL Tejas and Mikoyan MiG-29 in the future. Limited series production of Astra missiles began in 2017.

BrahMos Fastest supersonic cruise missile

The BrahMos is a medium-range stealthy ramjet supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarine, ships, aircraft or land. It is the fastest supersonic cruise missiles in the world. It is a joint-venture between the Russian Federation's NPO Mashinostroyeniya and India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), who together have formed BrahMos Aerospace. It is based on the Russian P-800 Oniks supersonic anti-ship cruise missile. The name BrahMos is a portmanteau formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia.

HAL AMCA Indian Stealth fighter programme

The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is an Indian programme to develop a stealth, multirole, air superiority fighter for the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy which will also include 6th Generation niche technologies. The design of the aircraft is carried out by Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), an aircraft design and development agency constituted under Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It is expected to be produced by a public-private joint venture between the DRDO, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and an Indian private company. The development cost is estimated to be around ₹15,000 crore.

Sukhoi Su-30MKI Indian variant of the Su-30MK multirole fighter aircraft

The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is a twinjet multirole air superiority fighter developed by Russia's Sukhoi and built under licence by India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force (IAF). A variant of the Sukhoi Su-30, it is a heavy, all-weather, long-range fighter.

Sukhoi Su-30MKM Malaysian version of the Su-30MK multirole combat aircraft

The Sukhoi Su-30MKM is a supermaneuverable fighter of the Royal Malaysian Air Force. It is a variant of the Su-30 series fighters, with many significant improvements over the original Su-30MK export version. The Su-30MKM was developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau and is based on the Su-30MKI of the Indian Air Force. Both aircraft have common airframe, thrust vectoring engines and digital fly-by-wire system, however the MKM version differs from the MKI mainly in the composition of the onboard avionics. It can carry up to 8,000 kg (17,637 lb) payload over a 1,296 km un-refueled combat radius.

The history of the Indian Air Force began with its establishment in 1932 and continues up to the present day.

Kalaikunda Air Force Station Indian Air Force Station in West Bengal, India

Kalaikunda Air Force Station (ICAO: VEDX) is an Indian Air Force Base near Kharagpur, located in the West Midnapur district of the state of West Bengal. It was the home of No. 18 Squadron IAF, the Flying Bullets. The squadron flew the Indian license-built Mikoyan MiG-27ML till its decommissioning in April 2016. A squadron of Su-30 MKIs is now at the base.

The Indian Air Force has been undergoing a modernization program to replace and upgrade its aging and outdated equipment since the late 90s to modern standards. For that reason it has started procuring and developing aircraft, weapons, associated technologies, and infrastructures. Some of these programs date back to the late 80s. The primary focus of current modernization and upgrades is to replace aircraft purchased from the Soviet Union that currently form the backbone of the Air Force.

Sudarshan laser-guided bomb Laser guided bomb

Sudarshan is an Indian laser-guided bomb kit, developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a DRDO lab with technological support from another DRDO lab Instruments Research and Development Establishment (IRDE), for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The DRDO Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon (SAAW) is a long-range precision-guided anti-airfield weapon developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It is designed to be capable of engaging ground targets with high precision up to a range of 100 kilometres (62 mi).

Exercise Indradhanush (Hindi:Rainbow) is a joint air force exercise conducted by the Royal Air Force and the Indian Air Force. The exercise is tasked to enhance mutual operational understanding between the two air forces via close interaction. The exercise started in 2006 and has held four editions so far.

On 27 February 2019, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) conducted six airstrikes at multiple locations in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). The airstrikes were part of the PAF military operation codenamed Operation Swift Retort and were conducted in retaliation to the Indian Air Force (IAF) airstrike in Balakot just a day before on 26 February.

The High Speed Low Drag (HSLD) bomb is a family of new generation short range air-dropped precision-guided munition that is currently being developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This general-purpose bomb is made for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and can be used against the destruction of strategic high value enemy infrastructure from stand-off distances. HSLD is comparable to Mark 80 series of bombs used by United States Air Force (USAF).
