Inderbir Singh "Ish" Sodhi (born 31 October 1992) is a New Zealand cricketer born in Punjab, India who represents the New Zealand national cricket team in all formats, and Canterbury in domestic cricket. [1] He bowls right-arm leg spin, and bats right-handed. He reached the no.1 ranking for T20I bowlers in January 2018, jumping from no.10 at the end of the previous year. [2] He was a part of the New Zealand squad to finish as runners-up at the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Early life

Sodhi is an ethnic Punjabi and was born in Ludhiana, India to a Sikh family. [3] His grandparents hail from Lahore in Pakistan pre-partition. [4] He moved to Papatoetoe, New Zealand with his family when he was four years old. He attended Papatoetoe High School. [5]

Domestic and T20 career

Sodhi made his debut for Northern Districts in the 2012–13 Plunket Shield season.

In 2017, Sodhi was not named in the Test squad against Bangladesh, which enabled him to play for Adelaide Strikers as an injury replacement for Chris Jordan. On 18 January, in his third game for the Strikers, he ended the match with figures of 6/11 off 3.3 overs to win the match for the Strikers and Man of the Match. These are the second-best figures in Big Bash history after Lasith Malinga's 6/7 from 4 overs between the Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers. [6] [7]

He was the leading wicket-taker in the 2018–19 Plunket Shield season, with 36 dismissals in seven matches. [8] He was released by the Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2020 IPL auction. [9] In July 2020, he was named in the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots squad for the 2020 Caribbean Premier League. [10] [11]

International career

His international debut for New Zealand came in a Test match against Bangladesh during New Zealand's 2013 tour of Bangladesh. He made his Twenty20 International debut against the West Indies in July 2014. In November 2014, Sodhi was selected for a three-test series against Pakistan cricket team. In the first Test, he scored 63, a personal best and the best score by a New Zealand number-ten batsman in Test cricket. Sodhi made his One Day International debut for New Zealand against Zimbabwe on 2 August 2015. [12]

In May 2018, he was one of the twenty players to be awarded a new contract for the 2018–19 season by New Zealand Cricket. [13] In April 2019, he was named in New Zealand's squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. [14] [15] In August 2021, Sodhi was named in New Zealand's squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. [16]

In December 2022, Sodhi was recalled in New Zealand's Test squad after 4 years, for their tour to Pakistan. [17] In the first Test, he picked up his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket, [18] besides scoring his career best 65 runs in the first innings. [19]

Todd Duncan Astle is a former New Zealand cricketer who played for the New Zealand national cricket team. Astle began his cricket career as an opening batsman, representing New Zealand in the 2006 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, but over time playing first-class cricket for Canterbury, he morphed into a bowling all-rounder. He made his Test cricket debut for New Zealand in 2012 in Sri Lanka, but did not play another international match until 2015. He represented New Zealand in all three forms of the game, but was unable to keep a consistent place in the team in any format because of regular injury problems and competition with other spin bowlers. In January 2020, Astle retired from first-class cricket to focus on limited-overs cricket. In February 2023 he retired from all forms of professional cricket.

Southee was a member of the New Zealand team that won the 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship. Southee currently has the highest (international) test batting strike rate among the batsmen with a minimum of 2000 test runs. His (batting) career strike rate is 83.12. He was also a part of the New Zealand squads to finish as runners-up in two Cricket World Cup finals in 2015 and 2019.

The 2014 Asia Cup was the twelfth edition of the Asia Cup cricket tournament. The tournament was held in Bangladesh from 25 February to 8 March 2014. Pakistan were the defending champions, having won the previous tournament. The tournament included the four Asian test-playing nations, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka; and ICC Asian Associate member Afghanistan. This was the first 50-over tournament in which Afghanistan took part. Ten league matches were played along with the final. The title sponsors of the tournament were Arise India and it was powered by Cycle Agarbathis. Sri Lanka Beat Pakistan in the final to become Asia Cup champions for the fifth time.

He has two older brothers, one of whom, Willy Nicholls, is a media correspondent for the Black Caps and White Ferns. He has also been the captain of the reserve A side since 2017. Nicholls was a member of the New Zealand team that won the 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship.

Thomas Ackland Blundell is a New Zealand cricketer. He made his international debut for the New Zealand national cricket team in January 2017. He also plays first-class cricket for Wellington. In April 2019, he was named in New Zealand's One Day International (ODI) squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup, despite being uncapped in an ODI match. The India cricket team toured Sri Lanka between July and September 2017 to play three Test matches, five One Day Internationals (ODIs) and a Twenty20 International match. Ahead of the Test series, the teams played a two-day warm-up match in Colombo.

The England cricket team toured New Zealand between February and April 2018 to play two Test and five One Day International (ODI) matches. Fixtures in round 7 of New Zealand's 2016–17 Plunket Shield season were played as day/night matches, in preparation for a day/night Test match, which took place at Eden Park. In August 2017, New Zealand Cricket confirmed that the Test at Eden Park would be played as a day/night game. In September 2017, the second ODI fixture was moved from McLean Park, Napier to the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, after issues in re-turfing the ground.
