Istanbul Sapphire, or Sapphire, is a skyscraper located in the central business district of Levent in Istanbul, Turkey.

Contents

It was Istanbul's and Turkey's tallest skyscraper between 2010 and 2016, and the 4th tallest building in Europe when its construction was completed in 2010. [3] Sapphire rises 54 floors above ground level, and has an above-ground roof height of 238 meters: the building has an overall structural height of 261 meters including its spire, which is part of the design and not a radio antenna. [3] Designed by Tabanlıoğlu Architects, it is a shopping and luxury residence mixed-use development managed by Kiler GYO. [3] It is also the country's first ecological skyscraper.

As of 2023, Istanbul Sapphire is the 5th tallest skyscraper in Istanbul and Turkey, behind the 352 m (1,154 ft 10 in) tall Turkish Central Bank Tower [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] in the Ataşehir district on the Asian side of the city; Metropol Istanbul Tower A (70 floors / 301 metres including its twin spires) [10] [11] [12] [13] also in the Ataşehir district; and Skyland Istanbul Towers 1 and 2 (2 x 284 metres), [14] [15] located adjacent to Nef Stadium in the Huzur neighbourhood of the Sarıyer district, on the European side.

History and architecture

Istanbul Sapphire was designed by Tabanlıoğlu Architects as a high-tech structure which consists of 64 floors (54 above-ground and 10 basement floors), communal living floors, extensive parking spaces, a large shopping mall, and 47 floors for residential use. [3]

There are special floors with private gardens between every 3 floors, and every 9 floors are separated from each other by a communal living area or mechanical floors. [3] Design of the gardens are proposed with a number of alternatives and the consistency of garden maintenance is under the residence management company's responsibility.

Turkey's deepest excavated construction pit

The foundation pit excavated for the project – 42.5 meters deep – is the deepest foundation pit excavated for any structure in Turkey.

Construction work

Construction of the project began in 2006 and was completed in 2010. [3] The building's official opening ceremony took place on 4 March 2011. [1]

The project is built on a land plot of 11,339 m2 (122,050 sq ft) and has an overall total construction area of 157,800 m2 (1,699,000 sq ft), which includes a 35,000 m2 (380,000 sq ft) shopping mall.

Opened on 6 June 2006, it unites a 160-store shopping mall, a 30-floor office tower and a 22-floor residential block with 179 residential apartments into a complex undulating around a dramatic architectural “canyon”. The total construction area of the project is 250,000 m2, with 30,000 m2 of rentable office area, 37,500 m2 of rentable retail area, 180 residential flats, 160 stores, 9 theater halls with a capacity of 1,600 spectators, and a parking facility for 2,300 vehicles. Each floor of the office tower has a total usable office space of 1,167 m2. The complex rises on an area of 29,427 m2.

Architecture of Turkey or Turkish architecture in the Republican Period is the architecture practised in Turkey since the foundation of the republic in 1923. Büyükdere Avenue is a major avenue which runs through the districts of Şişli, Beşiktaş and Sarıyer on the European side of Istanbul, Turkey. It begins at Şişli Mosque and runs in an eastward direction partly under the viaduct of the inner-city motorway O-1 through Mecidiyeköy, Esentepe, until reaching Zincirlikuyu; where it joins with Barbaros Boulevard and turns northward passing through Levent, Sanayi Mahallesi, Maslak and by the Fatih Forest, ending at the Hacıosman Slope on the Sarıyer district border. Its total length is 14 km (8.7 mi). From Zincirlikuyu to Maslak, it forms a border line between the districts of Kağıthane in the east and Beşiktaş in the west. It is named after the Büyükdere neighborhood of Sarıyer district, where it connects to. It is a major artery of the Istanbul Central Business District, which is not located in the historic center of the city.

Skyland İstanbul is a mixed-use complex of three skyscrapers in the Huzur neighborhood of the Sarıyer district in Istanbul, Turkey. It comprises the Skyland Residence Tower, Skyland Office Tower and Skyland Hotel Tower. The buildings were designed by Peter Vaughan of Broadway Malyan.

Istanbul's Central Business District as the real estate industry refers to it, is not the historic city center, but a 7-km-long north–south corridor of modern areas mostly along Barbaros Boulevard and Büyükdere Avenue. As of late 2021, 33% of the Class A office space in the metropolitan area was located in the CBD, of which about 790,000 sqm in Maslak, 690,000 sqm in Levent, 500,000 sqm in Zincirlikuyu/Esentepe/Gayrettepe and 100,000 sqm in Etiler.
