The Italian School of Asmara (officially Istituto italiano statale omnicomprensivo di Asmara - Scuola italiana di Asmara ) was a government-operated Italian international school located in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea. The school closed in 2020. [1]
In 1903, two Italian schools were founded, each with an Italian instructor, to serve the growing Italian colonial population, in Asmara and Keren. [2] The school in Keren later closed. The Asmara school originally served only preschool and grades one to five, but in 1957 added the Scuola dell'Infanzia Montessori, which served ages three to five. [3]
In 1975, the school ceased most operations due to the breakout of the Eritrean War of Independence, and most of the Italian community left. [3] By 1990, the Montessori preschool school grew to three teachers and four classes. [3]
In 2000, Italy recognised the school, arranging an agreement that the school be accessible to all temporary expatriate families for low cost. [2]
In 2012, the Italian and Eritrean governments agree to jointly manage the school, which had been owned by Italy and run as a private school. [4]
As of 2015 [update] , 550 students attended the school. [2]
The school closed in 2020.
There were three divisions:
The high school started operations in the 1935–1936 school year. It started as the Martini four-year state scientific senior high school. It was temporarily converted to a classical high school in the 1937–1937 school year but it reverted to its scientific high school status in the 1955–1956 school year. It became a five-year school in the 1986–1987 school year through a resolution of the academic board and the approval of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE). [6]
As of 2015, 85% of the high school's 330 students were Eritreans, with other nationalities making up the remainder. Previously, its students were almost entirely expatriate Italians. [6]
When the school was founded in 1903 it almost wholly served the children of Italian nationals. Following World War II, the number of native Eritrean students steadily increased. [2] In the 1956–57 school year, Eritrean students made up 17% of the student body, with Italians making up 83%. [2] As of 2015, native students represented 84% of the school, Italians or other Europeans 14%, and children of temporary expatriate workers, as per the Italian agreement with the school, made up 2%. [2] The preschool was 80% Eritrean and 20% Italian or other European. [3]
Sarrià-Sant Gervasi is one of the biggest districts of Barcelona. It's the district with the highest per capita income, the largest proportion of university degrees and the lowest unemployment rate. Situated on the north-west of the city, surrounded by the districts of Les Corts, Gràcia, Eixample and Horta-Guinardó and by the villages of Sant Just, Sant Feliu, Molins de Rei, and Sant Cugat. It is formed by the old villages of Sarrià, Vallvidrera, Santa Creu d'Olorda, and Sant Gervasi de Cassoles. The first written document found about Sarrià dates from the year 987, and the origins of the village are a Roman colony. The old Monestir de Pedralbes belonged to the village of Sarrià, and it is now the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza.
Education in Italy is compulsory from 6 to 16 years of age, and is divided into five stages: kindergarten, primary school, lower secondary school, upper secondary school and university (università). Education is free in Italy and free education is available to children of all nationalities who are residents in Italy. Italy has both a private and public education system.
The Asmara International Community School (AICS) in Asmara, Eritrea, is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program to children from prekindergarten through grade 12. The school was founded in 1994 to serve the needs of the international community and other students seeking English-language education.
Education in Eritrea is officially compulsory between 7 and 16 years of age. Important goals of Eritrea's educational policy are to provide basic education in each of Eritrea's mother tongues as well as to produce a society that is equipped with the necessary skills to function with a culture of self-reliance in the modern economy. The education infrastructure is currently inadequate to meet these needs.
The Liceo Italiano Statale Istanbul or the Istituti Medi Italiani (I.M.I.), popularly known as Liceo Italiano in Italian and İtalyan Lisesi in Turkish, is under legislation a private school which is situated in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, Turkey. Although considered a private school under Turkish law, the Liceo Italiano receives financial support and teachers from Italy.
The University of Asmara (UoA) was a public university in Asmara, Eritrea. The nation's first university, it was founded in 1958 by the "Piae Madres Nigritiae". The school was meant to provide for the local population, though its initial enrollment in the 1950s was entirely Italian. Over the course of its history it has been reopened and reorganised following political changes. In 2006 it was closed and reorganized into other institutions such as the Eritrea Institute of Technology.
Sarrià is a neighborhood in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district of Barcelona, Catalonia. Its main street is Major de Sarrià.
Liceo Español Cervantes, named for Miguel de Cervantes, is a Spanish international school in Gianicolo, Rome, Italy, operated by the Spanish Ministry of Education. It serves classes from primary school up to the bachillerato level. It is owned by the Spanish government and was established in 1973.
Eritrean Pidgin Italian was a pidgin language used in Italian Eritrea when Eritrea was a colony of Italy.
The Istituto Statale Italiano Leonardo Da Vinci is an Italian government-owned Italian international school in Paris, France. Its scuola media and liceo scientifico, along with the school administration, occupies one campus in the 7th arrondissement. The elementary school is housed in a different campus in the same arrondissement.
Istituto Italiano Statale Comprensivo di Barcellona or the Istituto Italiano Statale Comprensivo "Edoardo Amaldi" is an Italian international school in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Owned by the Italian government, it consists of three parts: Scuole secondarie "Edoardo Amaldi", Scuola primaria "Maria Montessori" and scuola dell'infanzia riconosciuta "Maria Montessori". The school administration and liceo occupy one campus, while all other classes are in a Sarrià facility.
