Jacqueline C. Romero (born 1970/1971) is an American lawyer who serves as the United States attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Romero is the granddaughter of Spanish immigrants. [1] She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of New Jersey in 1993 and a Juris Doctor from Rutgers Law School in 1996. [2] [1]
Romero was an associate at Lowenstein Sandler from 1996 to 1998. From 1998 to 2000, she served as a trial attorney in the United States Department of Justice. From 2000 to 2006, she was senior counsel for the United States Mint. From 2006 to June 21, 2022, she served as assistant United States attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. [3] [4] [5]
On April 22, 2022, President Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate Romero to serve as the United States attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. [2] On April 25, 2022, her nomination was sent to the Senate. [6] On June 9, 2022, her nomination was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee; Senators Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley and Marsha Blackburn were recorded as voting "Nay". [7]
On June 13, 2022, her nomination was unanimously confirmed in the United States Senate. She was sworn into office on June 21, 2022. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Romero is the first woman appointed by a president and confirmed by the Senate to hold the position of U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District, in addition, she is the first woman of color and first LGBTQIA+ person to become U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District. The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania is one of the original 13 federal judiciary districts created by the Judiciary Act of 1789. It originally sat in Independence Hall in Philadelphia as the United States District Court for the District of Pennsylvania, and is now located at the James Byrne Courthouse at 601 Market Street in Philadelphia. There are five Eastern District federal courtrooms in Pennsylvania: Philadelphia, Lancaster, Allentown, Reading, and Easton.
