Freestyle music, also called Latin freestyle or (initially) Latin hip hop, is a form of electronic dance music that emerged in the New York metropolitan area and Philadelphia, primarily among Hispanic Americans and Italian Americans in the 1980s. It experienced its greatest popularity from the late 1980s until the early 1990s. A common theme of freestyle lyricism originated as heartbreak in an urban environment typified by New York City.
Exposé is an American Latin freestyle vocal group formed in 1984 in Miami, Florida. Primarily consisting of lead vocalists Jeanette Jurado, Ann Curless, and Gioia Bruno, the group achieved much of their success between 1984 and 1993. They became the first group to attain four top-10 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 since their debut album, including 1988 number-one single "Seasons Change." In March 2015, Billboard magazine named the group the eighth most-successful girl group of all-time.

Pretty Poison is an American dance group based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Group members are Jade Starling ; Whey Cooler ; and Kaya Pryor (percussionist). Thomas Hays was also a guitarist as was Lou Franco. Pretty Poison is best known for their hit "Catch Me ", a top 10 U.S. Billboard Hot 100 hit in 1987.
Book of Love are an American synthpop and electronic band, formed in 1983 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and later based in New York City. Led by vocalist Susan Ottaviano, the band also includes keyboardists Ted Ottaviano, Lauren Roselli and Jade Lee. The band gained its first exposure as the opening act for two Depeche Mode tours in 1985 and 1986. The group has been described by the Houston Press as "forward thinking" for lyrics dealing with sexual orientation and gender roles.

Lisette Melendez is an American freestyle/Latin pop/dance-pop singer. She is best known for her Top 40 hit "Together Forever", which reached No. 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1991, and its follow-up "A Day In My Life ", which peaked at No. 49. Both songs were dance music hits and are credited as helping renew interest in Freestyle music in the early 1990s, which had been fading in popularity due to the drop in mainstream pop music and rise of grunge at the time.

"Catch Me " is a song released by American group Pretty Poison in 1987. It was included on the soundtrack to the film Hiding Out, which starred Jon Cryer and came out the same year; the song later appeared on Pretty Poison's debut album, Catch Me I'm Falling (1988). It was the group's biggest hit single to date, peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart in late September 1987. Later that same year, the song charted inside the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number eight and remaining in the top 40 for 14 weeks. The single was certified gold by the RIAA on March 9, 1989. In the UK the song entered the Top 100 for two weeks at the end of January 1988 and peaked at number 85.
"You Make Me Feel " is a 1978 song by American disco/R&B singer Sylvester. It was written by James Wirrick and Sylvester, and released as the second single from Sylvester's fourth album, Step II (1978). The song was already a largely popular dance club hit in late 1978, as the B-side of his previous single "Dance ", before it was officially being released in December. Music critic Robert Christgau has said the song is "one of those surges of sustained, stylized energy that is disco's great gift to pop music".
Catch Me I'm Falling is the 1988 official debut album by the American dance-pop group Pretty Poison, who consisted of Jade Starling and Whey Cooler. It contains the title track "Catch Me ", which was a top ten hit in the U.S. and also hit number one on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart the previous year. The second single off the album was a remix of their 1984 dance hit "Nighttime", which references Whodini's 1984 song "Freaks Come Out at Night", and was a top 40 hit in May 1988. The third single, "When I Look into Your Eyes", peaked on the dance chart in September of the same year.

T.P.E. Featuring Adam Marano is the debut album of the dance-pop and freestyle project T.P.E. created by music producer Adam Marano. The album was released in 1992 by Micmac Records. Of the four singles released from the album, the only one to succeed was "Then Came You", which reached No. 91 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1991. Other singles of this album were "Forever and a Day", released in 1992, "Sex U Down", released in 1993 and "Dance with Me", released in 1994. The album also contains the participation of freestyle singers that were already popular locally in Philadelphia such as Denine and Jade Starling, a member of the group Pretty Poison.
Harper Starling is an American singer, songwriter and dancer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her song "Euphoria" with The Perry Twins peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart.
The National LGBTQ Wall of Honor is an American memorial wall in New York City dedicated to LGBTQ "pioneers, trailblazers, and heroes". The wall is located inside of the Stonewall Inn and is a part of the Stonewall National Monument, the first U.S. National Monument dedicated to LGBTQ rights and history. The first fifty nominees were announced in June 2019 and the wall was unveiled on June 27, 2019, as a part of the Stonewall 50 – WorldPride NYC 2019 events. Each year five additional names will be added.
