A tsunami warning was issued shortly afterwards, but later cancelled. Two people are known to have died, one from a heart attack and another, a construction worker, crushed by a collapsing wall. It was the second strongest earthquake recorded in Costa Rica's history, following the 1991 Limon earthquake.

He resigned to PRSC after clashing with senior members of the party, who accused him of fund mismanagement in the 2020 municipal elections in retaliation for his resignation.

Twelve contestants, chosen to participate directly through the national casting held by the Concurso Nacional de Belleza de Costa Rica, competed for the title, of whom a 28-year-old model from Guanacaste, Brenda Muñoz, was named the winner.
