James Kinchen (born March 1, 1958) is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1980 to 1992. [1] Nicknamed "The Heat", Kinchen is best known for his bout against Thomas Hearns for the inaugural WBO super middleweight title. He also challenged twice for world titles at light heavyweight.

Amateur career

Kinchen started his career out of McKinney, Texas as a three-time Golden Gloves champion, as well as three-time Southwestern AAU champion. He ended his amateur career with a record of 127-12.

Professional career

Kinchen made his professional debut on August 8, 1980, defeating O'Daniel Marks via first-round knockout (KO) at the Dallas Convention Center. He won his first title on November 24, 1984, stopping Alex Ramos via ninth-round KO for the USBA middleweight title. [2] He later captured the vacant NABF super middleweight title on October 13, 1988 with a unanimous decision victory over Marvin Mack. [3] Less than a month later he challenged Thomas Hearns for the newly-created WBO super middleweight title, replacing an injured Fulgencio Obelmejias. [4] Kinchen knocked Hearns down in the fourth round of the fight, but ultimately lost a close majority decision. [4] Kinchen also challenged for the WBA and IBF light-heavyweight world titles.

Boxing in the 1980s was shaped by many different situations, such as the continuous corporate battles between the different world sanctioning organizations, the void left by Muhammad Ali as the sport's ambassador and consequent search for a new boxing hero, the continuous presence of Don King as the sport's most famous promoter, the surge of rival promoters as Bob Arum, Butch Lewis and Murad Muhammad, and major rule changes. Alex Ramos is a former middleweight boxer from the 1980s. A native of Manhattan, New York, whose parents were from Puerto Rico, Ramos won four Golden Gloves titles in New York City in the late 1970s (1977–1980) and was on the USA Boxing team from 1978–80. Ramos was nicknamed "The Bronx Bomber" after Joe Louis, whose nickname was "The Brown Bomber".

In professional boxing, the undisputed champion of a weight class is the boxer who holds world titles from all of the major sanctioning organisations simultaneously. There are currently four major sanctioning bodies: WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO. There were many undisputed champions before the number of sanctioning bodies increased to four in 2007, but there have only been 13 boxers to hold all four titles simultaneously. As of June 2022, Canelo Álvarez, Jermell Charlo and Devin Haney are undisputed champions in the super middleweight, light middleweight and lightweight divisions respectively.

Alfonso López III is an American professional boxer of Mexican descent. López fights out of Houston, Texas raised out of Cut & Shoot, Texas. He currently holds the WBC-NABF bridgerweight title in 2021-22. He has held the WBC-NABF light heavyweight title since 2019, also former WBC-Continental Americas super middleweight title in (2010) and the WBO-NABO light heavyweight title in (2019). As of September 1, 2022, López is ranked 6th in the World in the WBC rankings.
