Pathology is the study of disease and injury. The word pathology also refers to the study of disease in general,incorporating a wide range of biology research fields and medical practices. However,when used in the context of modern medical treatment,the term is often used in a narrower fashion to refer to processes and tests that fall within the contemporary medical field of "general pathology",an area that includes a number of distinct but inter-related medical specialties that diagnose disease,mostly through analysis of tissue and human cell samples. Idiomatically,"a pathology" may also refer to the predicted or actual progression of particular diseases,and the affix pathy is sometimes used to indicate a state of disease in cases of both physical ailment and psychological conditions. A physician practicing pathology is called a pathologist.
Anatomical pathology (Commonwealth) or anatomic pathology (U.S.) is a medical specialty that is concerned with the diagnosis of disease based on the macroscopic,microscopic,biochemical,immunologic and molecular examination of organs and tissues. Over the 20th century,surgical pathology has evolved tremendously:from historical examination of whole bodies (autopsy) to a more modernized practice,centered on the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer to guide treatment decision-making in oncology. Its modern founder was the Italian scientist Giovanni Battista Morgagni from Forlì.
Clinical pathology is a medical specialty that is concerned with the diagnosis of disease based on the laboratory analysis of bodily fluids,such as blood,urine,and tissue homogenates or extracts using the tools of chemistry,microbiology,hematology,molecular pathology,and Immunohaematology. This specialty requires a medical residency.
A Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) performs diagnostic testing of blood and body fluids in clinical laboratories. The scope of a medical laboratory scientist's work begins with the receipt of patient or client specimens and terminates with the delivery of test results to physicians and other healthcare providers. The utility of clinical diagnostic testing relies squarely on the validity of test methodology. To this end,much of the work done by medical laboratory scientists involves ensuring specimen quality,interpreting test results,data-logging,testing control products,performing calibration,maintenance,validation,and troubleshooting of instrumentation as well as performing statistical analyses to verify the accuracy and repeatability of testing. Medical laboratory scientists may also assist healthcare providers with test selection and specimen collection and are responsible for prompt verbal delivery of critical lab results. Medical Laboratory Scientists in healthcare settings also play an important role in clinical diagnosis. An estimated 70% of medical decisions are based on laboratory test results and MLS contributions affect 95% of a health system's costs.
The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is a public academic health science center in Omaha,Nebraska. Founded in 1869 and chartered as a private medical college in 1881,UNMC became part of the University of Nebraska System in 1902. Rapidly expanding in the early 20th century,the university founded a hospital,dental college,pharmacy college,college of nursing,and college of medicine. It later added colleges of public health and allied health professions. One of Omaha's top employers,UNMC has an annual budget of $841.6 million for 2020 to 2021,and an economic impact of $4.8 billion.
Loyola Medicine,also known as Loyola University Health System,is a quaternary-care system with a 61-acre (25 ha) main medical center campus in the western suburbs of Chicago,in the U.S. state of Illinois. The medical center campus is located in Maywood,13 miles (21 km) west of the Chicago Loop and 8 miles (13 km) east of Oak Brook. The heart of the medical center campus is the Loyola University Medical Center. Also on campus are the Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center Loyola Outpatient Center,Center for Heart &Vascular Medicine and Loyola Oral Health Center as well as the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine,Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing,Center for Translational Research and Education,and the Loyola Center for Fitness.
A medical laboratory or clinical laboratory is a laboratory where tests are conducted out on clinical specimens to obtain information about the health of a patient to aid in diagnosis,treatment,and prevention of disease. Clinical medical laboratories are an example of applied science,as opposed to research laboratories that focus on basic science,such as found in some academic institutions.
Rodney Smith Markin,is an American pathologist and authority in the field of laboratory automation. In 1993,he designed and created one of the world's first automated clinical laboratory specimen,device and analyzer management systems. In the mid-1990s,he chaired a standards group called the Clinical Testing Automation Standards Steering Committee (CTASSC) of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry,which later evolved into an area committee of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute.
The Journal of Clinical Pathology (JCP) is a peer-reviewed medical journal covering all aspects of pathology,published by the BMJ Group and co-owned by the Association of Clinical Pathologists. Diagnostic and research areas covered include histopathology,virology,haematology,microbiology,cytopathology,chemical pathology,molecular pathology,forensic pathology,dermatopathology,neuropathology,and immunopathology. Each issue contains reviews,original articles,short reports,case reports,correspondence,and book reviews.
Master of Medicine is a postgraduate professional clinical degree awarded by medical schools to physicians following a period of instruction,supervised clinical rotations,and examination. The degree usually takes three years to complete,but may take up to four years in some countries. It is awarded by only medical subspecialties and usually includes a dissertation component.before enrollment in this program,medical graduate has to pass the entrance test. The degree may complement an existing fellowship in the chosen specialty or be the sole qualification necessary for registration as a specialist.
Nebraska Medicine,is a private not-for-profit American healthcare company based in Omaha,Nebraska. The company was created as Nebraska Health System (NHS) in 1997,when Bishop Clarkson Hospital merged with the adjacent University Hospital in midtown Omaha. Renamed The Nebraska Medical Center in 2003,in 2014 the company merged with UNMC Physicians and Bellevue Medical Center to become Nebraska Medicine. The company has full ownership of two hospitals and 39 specialty and primary care clinics in and around Omaha,with partial ownership in two rural hospitals and a specialty hospital. Nebraska Medicine's main campus,Nebraska Medicine – Nebraska Medical Center,has 718 beds,while its Bellevue Medical Center campus has 91 beds.
The University of Florida College of Medicine –Jacksonville is the largest of the three University of Florida Health Science Center Jacksonville colleges —medicine,nursing and pharmacy. Carol Remmer Angle is an American pediatrician,nephrologist,and toxicologist. Angle is known as one of the nation's leading researchers on lead poisoning. She is professor emeritus at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha,Nebraska. Angle joined UNMC in 1954 and was one of the first women to serve as chair of an academic medical department (pediatrics). She also served as chief of pediatric nephrology,director of the pediatric intensive care unit,and director of medical toxicology. In 1957,Angle along with Dr. Matilda McIntire,founded one of the country's first poison control centers. Angle is a founding member and a prior president of the American Association of Poison Control Centers. For forty years,Angle served as an expert for NIEHS,National Institutes of Health and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency panels investigating heavy metal toxicity. Angle continues as a toxicology consultant,reviewer and editor.

Miguel A. Sanchez is a board-certified pathologist who specializes in anatomic pathology,clinical pathology and cytopathology. Sanchez is chief of pathology and medical director of The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in Englewood,New Jersey. He is best known for his contribution in setting the standards of diagnosis and treatment of breast and thyroid disease praised by the United States Congress in 1994.
Valerie A. Fitzhugh is an American pathologist and Associate Professor of Pathology,Immunology,and Laboratory Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School as well as an Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She is the Chair of the Department of Pathology,Immunology,and Laboratory Medicine at Rutgers and the Chair at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School as well. Fitzhugh specializes in bone and soft tissue pathology and cytopathology and has made the Pathology Power List by The Pathologist Magazine in 2016,2018,and 2019. She is involved in educating pathology residents and she actively uses social media as a platform for education and for improving diversity in pathology and she also studies how effective social media is at enhancing accurate communication of science and medicine.
Sheritta A. Strong is an American adult psychiatrist and an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Strong is a leader in education and advocacy at UNMC,and is the co-director of Medical Student Education in the Department of Psychiatry as well as the Interim Director for Inclusion at UNMC. As a psychiatrist,Strong focuses her clinical attention on treating patients with chronic and persistent mental illness. She is also dedicated to reducing barriers to healthcare access for marginalized populations and she mentors underrepresented scientists and physicians to increase their retention in healthcare. In 2018,Strong was awarded the Nancy C.A. Roeske,M.D.,Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Medical Student Education by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and in 2020 Strong became a Distinguished Fellow of the APA.
Howard E. Gendelman is an American physician-scientist whose research intersects the disciplines of neuroimmunology,pharmacology,and infectious diseases. Gendelman was born in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania. His research is focused on harnessing immune responses for therapeutic gain in HIV/AIDS and Neurodegenerative disease. He is the Margaret R. Larson Professor of infectious diseases and internal medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha.
