Jane Friedman is the Co-Founder of Open Road Integrated Media, [1] which sells and markets ebooks. [2] She was the President and Chief Executive Officer of HarperCollins Publishers Worldwide, one of the world's leading English-language publishers, from 1997 to 2008.

Friedman is credited with inventing the author's tour, now a staple of the industry. [3] Friedman founded and became president of the first audio books division of a trade publisher.

Early life

Friedman was born to a Jewish family, [4] the daughter of Ruth and Bert Lippman; her father was a graphic artist and her mother was one of New York's original Miss Subways. [5] After graduating from Hewlett High School, Friedman earned a B.A. degree in English from New York University in 1967. [5]

Career

She was Executive Vice President of Random House, Inc., Executive Vice President of the Knopf Publishing Group, Publisher of Vintage Books, and Founder and President of Random House Audio Publishing. She came to HarperCollins from Random House. Her departure from HarperCollins was reported in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times on Wednesday, June 5, 2008. [6]

She has served on the board of the Association of American Publishers, Literacy Partners, Yale University Press, and Poets & Writers, Inc. [7] She is also a member of the American Advisory Committee of the Jerusalem International Book Fair, the Advisory Committee to the MFA program in creative writing at The New School and is a Vice-Chair of the Entertainment, Media and Communications Division of the UJA Federation of New York. In 2011, Jane secured $8 million in funding from investment companies Azure Capital, Golden Seeds and Kohlberg Ventures. [9]

Friedman lives in Manhattan and East Hampton, New York. [10]

Victoria Barnsley is a British businesswoman and entrepreneur. In 1984, she co-founded the publishing house Fourth Estate after raising £80,000 from four backers via the Business Expansion Scheme, a scheme which provided investors with tax incentives. In 2000, the company was acquired by HarperCollins, a subsidiary of News Corporation, for a figure believed to be about £10.2m. In addition to its ebook publishing business, Open Road Integrated Media is the parent company of book publisher Open Road Media and content brands Early Bird Books, The Lineup, The Archive, Murder & Mayhem, A Love So True, and The Portalist.

Susan Laurie Kamil was the publisher as well as editor-in-chief of the Random House Publishing Group.

Pranay Gupte is an American journalist of Indian origin, writer of biographical and non-fiction books, documentary film producer, and television and radio commentator. He worked for many years as a New York Times staff reporter and international correspondent in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, and later as a global affairs columnist for Newsweek. In 1991, he founded The Earth Times, a newspaper that focused on environmental affairs, economic development, and issues relating to population and family planning. He has written many books, including Mother India: A Political Biography of Indira Gandhi, which appeared in 1992 and in a second edition in 2009.
