The Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports was established in 1983 in Aru, Pahalgam, when chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir suggested its creation to Prime Smt Indira Gandhi. The institute was formed on the lines of other national mountaineering institutes in the country (i.e., the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering). [1] Aru was chosen as a natural location for the institute with its rolling hills and easy access to mountain passes. [2] The institute currently offers training in Mountaineering courses, Skiing courses and Adventure Courses. [3]

History

Under the direction of the Central Government, a recce[ check spelling ] team, under Brig Gyan Singh selected the site for the institute in Aru village, Pahalgam. In 1983, the institute was registered under the Registration of Societies Act No XXI of 1980 on 12 Sept. The first meeting of the institute was held in Feb, 1984 and it was decided that the institute would be head by a serving officer of the armed forces with experience in mountaineering activities. Lt Col (later Brig) SS Kahlon was chosen for the job by the Ministry of Defence. The State Government also agreed to transfer 101 acres of land in Aru village for the same. The first Basic Mountaineering Course was conducted in June–July 1985 with 17 students from a temporary hut in Aru. [3] In the 1989, militancy rose to its peak in the Kashmir Valley and conflict engulfed the entire region. [4]

Activities

The institute currently undertakes the following activities:

Summer courses

During the pleasant summer season, the institute conducts its Basic and Advance Mountaineering Course. This institute also conducts Mountain Expeditions with Advance Mountaineering Course. The course fee is heavily subsidized by the Govt of India and the Govt of Jammu and Kashmir also sponsors a certain portion of the courses. [5] These are graded courses and are accepted by all mountaineering bodies in the country. To boost adventure tourism in the state, the institute conducts regular and special adventure courses for adventure tourists. [6]

Winter courses

During winters, the institute conducts Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Skiing in Aru and Pahalgam. It also conducts special courses for NDRF, SDRF on Mountain Search and Rescue. [7]

Pahalgam, known as Pahalgom is a town and a notified area committee in Anantnag district of the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a popular tourist destination and hill station. Military operations in Poonch (1948)

Military operations took place in Poonch district, then part of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, in 1948 during the conflict in Jammu and Kashmir between the Indian Army and Pakistani and Azad Kashmir rebel forces. Poonch withstood a siege by these forces from November 1947 until relieved by an Indian offensive, Operation Easy on 20 November 1948. The besieged garrison, commanded by Brig. Pritam Singh, was maintained by air supply. Military operations ended with Poonch town and the eastern part of Poonch district in Indian hands and western part of the Poonch district in Pakistani hands.

Skiing in India

Skiing in India is an activity that mostly takes place in the northern states of India, where the Himalayas are situated. Skiing is administered by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation in India. The Himalayas provide an excellent skiing experience owing to their great height which makes for long descents. Heliskiing is also gaining popularity in places like Manali and Gulmarg. However skiing in India suffers from lack of infrastructure. There are also security concerns in Gulmarg which is 20 km (12 mi) from the Line of Control, however since 2002, it has been peaceful, which has led to an increase in skiing activity in the region. Some of the most popular skiing locations in India are Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir, Solang in Himachal Pradesh and Auli in Uttarakhand. The skiing season in India is from January to March.

The Lidder Valley or Liddar Valley in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India, is a Himalayan sub-valley that forms the southeastern corner of the Kashmir Valley. Popular sports in Jammu and Kashmir include cricket, football and winter sports along with sports like golf, water sports, Ice stock sport and adventure sports. The National Winter Games have been held in Gulmarg in 1996, 2004 and 2008. The first Khelo India Winter Games were held in February and March 2020 in Leh and Gulmarg. Jammu and Kashmir won the most gold medals while the Indian Army team came second with 8 gold medals. The second edition of the winter games were also held successfully in Gulmarg in 2020 with Jammu and Kashmir coming first and Karnataka second.

The National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS) is an autonomous institute under the Indian Ministry of Defence, which provides specialized training in mountain rescue, mountaineering and adventure sports. The institute was founded by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and is located in Dirang of the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. NIMAS is the first National Institute of India mandated to conduct adventure courses in the field of land, air and aqua.

The sanctuary spreads over 511 square kilometres (197 sq mi), lies 76 kilometres (47 mi) east of Srinagar. It was declared a game reserve in 1945 under the Dogra Rule and later upgraded to a sanctuary in 1981.
