Jeffrey Pinsler

Jeffrey Pinsler SC PBM is a Singaporean legal academic and lawyer. He was appointed an Emeritus Professor at the National University of Singapore's Faculty of Law in May 2022, having previously served as the Geoffrey Bartholomew Professor of Law and Senior Professorial Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Legal Education. In his time at NUS, Pinsler has served as Vice Dean, Chair of the Faculty Search Committee [1] and was also a member of the University's Board of Discipline. [2] In August 2022, he concurrently took on an appointment as a consultant at Drew & Napier. [3]

Education and academic career

Pinsler graduated from the University of Liverpool and started out his legal career as a lawyer in Drew and Napier from 1981 to 1985 [4] in the field of admiralty under Mr GP Selvam. [5] He subsequently joined the faculty of the National University of Singapore's Faculty of Law in 1986, where he has remained ever since. Pinsler also holds an LLM from the University of Cambridge.

Professional recognition

Pinsler is "regarded as the leading authority in evidence, procedure, and ethics and professional responsibility". [6] He has produced 16 major works and multiple articles in his capacity as writer and/or general editor, many of which are essential references by practitioners and regularly relied on by the Singapore Courts, and he has been cited in over 600 judgements. [2]

In 2004, Pinsler was awarded the LL.D. by his alma mater, the University of Liverpool, in recognition of his "supreme academic distinction in law". [5]

Awards

Pinsler was appointed Senior Counsel in 2008, [7] and is one of the few Senior Counsel in academia in Singapore. He also received the Academy Publishing Award in 2018. [8]

Pinsler received the Public Service Medal in 2006 [9] and was also awarded the NUS Law Long Service Award in 2015 [10] and 2020. [11]

Personal life

Pinsler is married to Leena, [12] a consultant with Drew & Napier LLC.

The National University of Singapore Faculty of Law is Singapore's oldest law school. NUS Law was initially established in 1956 as the Department of Law in the University of Malaya. After its establishment, NUS Law was Singapore's only law school for half a century, until the subsequent establishment of the SMU School of Law in 2007 and the SUSS School of Law in 2017. NUS Law is currently located at the NUS Bukit Timah Campus. The current dean of NUS Law is Andrew Simester. Cavinder Bull is a Singaporean lawyer and the chief executive officer of the law firm Drew & Napier. He has an active practice in complex litigation and international arbitration.

Adrian Tan Gim Hai was a Singaporean lawyer and author. Known for writing the Teenage Textbook series of books in the 1980s, he was the 27th president of the Law Society of Singapore and a partner at TSMP Law Corporation.

Yeo was succeeded as dean in 2017 by Goh Yihan. At the time he stepped down, Yeo was said to have "been instrumental in developing SOL into a leading law school in Singapore and in Asia".
