Jenni Barclay is a professor of volcanology at the University of East Anglia. She works on ways to mitigate volcanic risks, the interactions between rainfall and volcanic activity and the communication of volcanic hazards in the Caribbean. Barclay leads the NERC-ESRC funded Strengthening Resilience to Volcanic Hazards (STREVA) research project as well as a Leverhulme Trust programme looking at the volcanic history of the Ascension Islands.

Early life and education

Barclay became interested in the natural environment as a child, particularly volcanoes, tsunamis and avalanches. She enjoyed watching scientists from the Climatic Research Unit on BBC Horizon. [1] Barclay studied geology at the University of Edinburgh. [2] She moved to Bristol for her doctoral degree, and studied degassing processes in silicic volcanoes. [2] During her postdoctoral fellowships she investigated magma storage in the Soufrière Hills volcano, an eruption which began on 18 July 1995. [2] She identified that the Soufrière Hills magma contained amphibole, quartz, plagioclase, pyroxene, magnetite and ilmenite at pressures of 115 to 130 Megapascals. [3] She worked at the University of California, Berkeley and University of Geneva, as well as serving as a duty scientist at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory. [2]

Research and career

In 1999 Barclay was appointed to the University of East Anglia. Her research combines geological investigations into the dynamic processes of volcanoes with analysis of the social and cultural landscapes in which they erupt in. [4] [5] She served as Principal Investigator on Strengthening Resilience to Volcanic Hazards (STREVA), looking to develop a practical volcanic risk assessment framework, which was supported by the Natural Environment Research Council and Economic and Social Research Council. [6] [7] [8] During STREVA Barclay worked with people from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to document the historical and culture record of the 1902 and 1979 La Soufrière eruptions. [9] As part of the programme, the researchers worked with the University of the West Indies to create a portable exhibit that toured the Caribbean. [9] She combined historical archives, field measurements and meteorological modelling to reconstruct the La Soufrière eruptions. [10] This allowed her to understand how the wind flow around volcanoes controls the movement of ash plumes through the atmosphere, depositing ash both close to the volcano and far away. [10] In her work with communities in Ecuador Barclay showed that volcanic risk can be improved with collaborative monitoring. [11] This work has inspired her latest project, Tomorrow's Cities, which looks at urban disaster risk in cities including Quito. [12] Barclay has argued that the deaths that occur due to pulses of gas and solids after a volcano are avoidable. [13]

Public engagement

Alongside her research, Barclay is committed to outreach and public engagement. [14] She focuses on communicating the relationships between the hazards and surface topographies; for example, the difficult situations that arise when land that is important to communities becomes too dangerous as a place to live. [14] STREVA resulted in a series of films that gave a voice to affected communities. [15] [16] In 2011 Barclay worked with Top Trumps to create a volcano themed version of the game. [17] To create the game, Barclay consulted her colleagues to rank the thirty volcanoes for their explosiveness and deadliness. [18] Barclay used the funds raised from Volcano Top Trumps to fund annual competitions to help people affected by volcanoes. [19] They helped children in Ecuador make a book about volcano legends, the sales of which raised more money for the local community. She has created websites to communicate the relationship between hazards and landscape. [20] [21] She has appeared on the BBC, as well as speaking at Pint of Science, the Norwich Science Festival and the Natural History Museum. [22] [23] [24]

Awards and recognition

2022 - Reginald Daly Lecture of the American Geophysical Union. [25] This is presented 'annually to a recipient who exemplifies Daly's work with outstanding contributions to volcanology, geochemistry, or petrology.'

2015 - UK Volcanic and Magmatic Studies Group of the Geological Society of London, Thermo-Fisher Award, [26] awarded annually to an individual who 'has made a significant contribution to our .. understanding of volcanic and magmatic processes'.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Auckland volcanic field</span> Volcanic field in New Zealand

The Auckland volcanic field is an area of monogenetic volcanoes covered by much of the metropolitan area of Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, located in the North Island. The approximately 53 volcanoes in the field have produced a diverse array of maars, tuff rings, scoria cones, and lava flows. With the exception of Rangitoto, no volcano has erupted more than once, but the other eruptions lasted for various periods ranging from a few weeks to several years. Rangitoto erupted several times and recently twice; in an eruption that occurred about 600 years ago, followed by a second eruption approximately 50 years later. The field is fuelled entirely by basaltic magma, unlike the explosive subduction-driven volcanism in the central North Island, such as at Mount Ruapehu and Lake Taupō.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Soufrière Hills</span> Volcano on Montserrat in the Caribbean

The Soufrière Hills are an active, complex stratovolcano with many lava domes forming its summit on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. After a long period of dormancy, the Soufrière Hills volcano became active in 1995 and has continued to erupt ever since. Its eruptions have rendered more than half of Montserrat uninhabitable, destroying the capital city, Plymouth, and causing widespread evacuations: about two-thirds of the population have left the island. Chances Peak in the Soufrière Hills was the highest summit on Montserrat until the mid-1990s, but it has since been eclipsed by various rising and falling volcanic domes during the recent volcanic activity.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lava dome</span> Roughly circular protrusion from slowly extruded viscous volcanic lava

In volcanology, a lava dome is a circular, mound-shaped protrusion resulting from the slow extrusion of viscous lava from a volcano. Dome-building eruptions are common, particularly in convergent plate boundary settings. Around 6% of eruptions on Earth are lava dome forming. The geochemistry of lava domes can vary from basalt to rhyolite although the majority are of intermediate composition The characteristic dome shape is attributed to high viscosity that prevents the lava from flowing very far. This high viscosity can be obtained in two ways: by high levels of silica in the magma, or by degassing of fluid magma. Since viscous basaltic and andesitic domes weather fast and easily break apart by further input of fluid lava, most of the preserved domes have high silica content and consist of rhyolite or dacite.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vulcanian eruption</span> Volcanic eruption with dense ash clouds

A Vulcanian eruption is a type of volcanic eruption characterized by a dense cloud of ash-laden gas exploding from the crater and rising high above the peak. They usually commence with phreatomagmatic eruptions which can be extremely noisy due to the rising magma heating water in the ground. This is usually followed by the explosive clearing of the vent and the eruption column is dirty grey to black as old weathered rocks are blasted out of the vent. As the vent clears, further ash clouds become grey-white and creamy in colour, with convolutions of the ash similar to those of Plinian eruptions.

These include gases trapped in cavities (vesicles) in volcanic rocks, dissolved or dissociated gases in magma and lava, or gases emanating from lava, from volcanic craters or vents. Volcanic gases can also be emitted through groundwater heated by volcanic action.

The Silverthrone Caldera is a potentially active caldera complex in southwestern British Columbia, Canada, located over 350 kilometres (220 mi) northwest of the city of Vancouver and about 50 kilometres (31 mi) west of Mount Waddington in the Pacific Ranges of the Coast Mountains. The caldera is one of the largest of the few calderas in western Canada, measuring about 30 kilometres (19 mi) long (north-south) and 20 kilometres (12 mi) wide (east-west). Mount Silverthrone, an eroded lava dome on the caldera's northern flank that is 2,864 metres (9,396 ft) high, may be the highest volcano in Canada.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Volcanic hazards</span>

A volcanic hazard is the probability a volcanic eruption or related geophysical event will occur in a given geographic area and within a specified window of time. The risk that can be associated with a volcanic hazard depends on the proximity and vulnerability of an asset or a population of people near to where a volcanic event might occur.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Multi-component gas analyzer system</span>

A multi-component gas analyzer system (Multi-GAS) is an instrument package used to take real-time high-resolution measurements of volcanic gases. A Multi-GAS package includes an infrared spectrometer for CO2, two electrochemical sensors for SO2 and H2S, and pressure–temperature–humidity sensors, all in a weatherproof box. The system can be used for individual surveys or set up as permanent stations connected to radio transmitters for transmission of data from remote locations. The instrument package is portable, and its operation and data analysis are simple enough to be conducted by non-specialists.

Marie Edmonds is a professor of volcanology and geology in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Cambridge whose research focuses on the physics and chemistry of volcanic eruptions and magmatism and understanding volatile cycling in the solid Earth as mediated by plate tectonics. She is interested in the social and economic impacts of natural hazards; and the sustainable use of Earth's mineral and energy resources. Professor Edmonds is the Vice President and Ron Oxburgh Fellow in Earth Sciences at Queens' College, Cambridge; and the Deputy Head of Department and Director of Research at the Earth Sciences Department, University of Cambridge.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ubinas</span> Volcano in southern Peru

Ubinas is an active stratovolcano in the Moquegua Region of southern Peru, approximately 60 kilometres (37 mi) east of the city of Arequipa. Part of the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes, it rises 5,672 metres (18,609 ft) above sea level. The volcano's summit is cut by a 1.4-kilometre-wide (0.87 mi) and 150-metre-deep (490 ft) caldera, which itself contains a smaller crater. Below the summit, Ubinas has the shape of an upwards-steepening cone with a prominent notch on the southern side. The gently sloping lower part of the volcano is also known as Ubinas I and the steeper upper part as Ubinas II; they represent different stages in the volcano's geological history.

Susan Loughlin MBE is a British volcanologist. She was Director of the Montserrat Volcano Observatory from 2004-2006, and has been Head of Volcanology for the British Geological Survey since 2008.

Erouscilla "Pat" Joseph is a volcanologist, and Director of the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre, which oversees seismic and volcanic monitoring of the English-speaking Eastern Caribbean. She led the volcanological management of the 2021 La Soufriere eruptions on Saint Vincent, for which the Seismic Research Centre received global accolades.
