Jessie Gooding (born November 28,1926) is an American politician and a Democrat.
On November 4,1969,Jessie O. Gooding was elected as a Trustee in Jefferson Township,Montgomery County,Ohio. For part of his tenure,Gooding served as the President of the Trustees. On November 4,1997,Gooding was defeated by Angela Jones after 28 years of service to the residents of Jefferson Township. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]
On December 9,1984,Jessie Gooding defeated Tony Whitmore for the Presidency of the Dayton Chapter NAACP. He succeeded Atty. Richard Austin,who led the organization for 8 years. Gooding led the organization for 18 years,retiring on December 31,2002. He supported Floyd B. Johnson to be his successor. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15]
Gooding has been historically recognized for his civil and human rights work. He was inducted into the Ohio Civil Rights Commission Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Dayton Region's Walk of Fame in 2019. Ohio State Representative Willis Blackshear Jr. sponsored H.B. 671 to name portions of S.R. 35,“Jessie Gooding Highway.”During the construction of the new Third St. bridge,the Montgomery County Engineer along with many community members,honored Gooding for his Civil and Human Rights work. From 1960 to 1970,she served for 10 years with the United States Information Agency (USIA) on various cultural projects in Africa. The first African-American woman to graduate from the University of Cincinnati School of Law,Austin was appointed in 1937 as an assistant attorney general in Ohio. George Wilson was an American professional basketball player. The Lowcountry Lowline is a planned linear park in Charleston,South Carolina to be located on 1.7 miles of old railroad roadbed. It will run from Mt. Pleasant Street to Courtland Street. The park is being planned by the Friends of the Lowcountry Lowline. Since 2021,more than $10.25 million in city and federal funding has gone to the planning of the park. The 1973 Wittenberg Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Wittenberg University in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) during the 1973 NCAA Division III football season. In their fifth year under head coach Dave Maurer,the Tigers compiled a perfect 12–0 record and won the OAC championship,defeating Marietta (35–7) in the OAC championship game.
Derrick Lee Foward is an American social activist and leader in the US civil rights movement. He is the 34th President of the Dayton Unit of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He is the youngest person to lead the local organization. Foward was first elected president on November 12,2006,defeating Gladys Gunn,longtime educator in the Dayton Public Schools District,receiving 53.09% of the votes. His first 2-year term commenced on January 1,2007,and expired on December 31,2008. Foward ran unopposed in 2008. He ran for re-election in 2010 and defeated Chris Cortner,retired General Motors Worker,receiving 75.57% of the votes. Foward ran unopposed in the Dayton Unit NAACP elections in the years of 2012,2014,2016,2018,2020 and 2022. He is currently in his eighth 2-year term which expires on December 31,2024. Foward also served in the following leadership roles within the Ohio Conference NAACP:1st Vice President;2nd Vice President;3rd Vice President;and Executive Committee Member.
