Jill Hazelbaker (born 1981) [2] is a communications executive, political campaign spokesperson and campaign staff member primarily for candidates of the Republican Party in the United States. She was the national communications director for John McCain's presidential campaign. She has since worked for Google and is currently Senior Vice President of Marketing and Public Affairs at Uber. Fortune magazine included her in their 2020 '40 Under 40' listing under the technology category. [2]

Early life and education

A native of Salem, Oregon, Hazelbaker attended the University of Oregon, studying Political Science while she worked for the school newspaper, Oregon Daily Emerald . [3] While a student, Hazelbaker had a congressional internship in Washington, D.C. for Rep. Greg Walden, an Oregon Republican.

Political campaign work

In 2002, she worked on Sen. Gordon Smith's 2002 re-election campaign. In 2004, she worked to help Republican Jim Zupancic in his campaign against U.S. Rep. Darlene Hooley, which led to a short stint at the New York-based consulting firm Mercury Consulting. [4]

Hazelbaker served as a campaign spokeswoman for the 2006 US Senate campaign of Republican Thomas Kean Jr. [5] [6] New Jersey graduate student Juan Melli, founder of a weblog and online forum called Blue Jersey, noticed that between July and September one IP address had registered four different accounts, each one claiming to be a Democrat but posting multiple anti-Menendez comments using pseudonyms like usedtobeblue and cleanupnj. The same IP address was also used for multiple Wikipedia edits attacking Menendez. [7] This IP address had also been used to send emails signed by Hazelbaker. [8] [9] [10] Hazelbaker and Kean both denied that she had played any role in astroturfing, although neither denied that the activity originated from a Kean campaign computer. [11]

The Kean campaign also drew scrutiny over its relationship with opposition researcher Christopher Lyon. [12]

On December 21, 2006, Hazelbaker was hired to serve as New Hampshire communications director on the staff of John McCain, who became the Republican candidate for president in the 2008 election. [13] Following a shakeup on the McCain campaign in the summer of 2007, most of McCain's media team resigned. Hazelbaker was then promoted to national communications director. [14] [15]

In 2009 she worked for Michael Bloomberg's campaign for reelection as Mayor of New York. [16] On the Bloomberg team, Hazelbaker was working under Howard Wolfson, the former communications director for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. [17]

In 2020, she endorsed Joe Biden for president. [18]

Business career

After working for Bloomberg, Hazelbaker went to work for Google, [19] where she spent four years and her positions included Senior Director of Public Relations and Internal Communications across EMEA, head of government relations in the EU, and finally head of corporate communications. In a study of executive career paths published in March 2014, she was singled out as the youngest executive studied and for having advanced extremely rapidly due to the nature of political campaigns. [20] From October 2014 to October 2015, she was head of communications for Snapchat. [21] In October 2015 she joined Uber as Senior Vice President of Global Policy and Communications [22] and is currently the Senior Vice President of Marketing and Public Affairs as of June 2019. 2006 United States Senate election in New Jersey

The 2006 United States Senate election in New Jersey was held November 7, 2006. Incumbent Democratic Senator Bob Menendez was elected to represent New Jersey in the United States Senate for a six-year term which ended in January 2013. The seat was previously held by Democrat Jon Corzine, who resigned in January 2006 after being elected Governor of New Jersey. After Corzine was sworn in Governor, he appointed Menendez, then a U.S. Representative, to the vacant Senate seat. Menendez was challenged by Republican State Senator Thomas Kean, Jr. and seven other candidates. Filing for the primary closed on April 10, 2006. The primary election was held June 6, 2006. Menendez became the first Hispanic to hold a U.S. Senate seat from New Jersey, and was the first Latino elected to statewide office in the state.

Rachel Marjorie Joan Whetstone is a public relations executive. Whetstone was in charge of communications and public policy for Google for nearly 10 years. She was senior vice-president of communications and public policy for Uber until April 2017. She then joined Facebook as VP of communications of its WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger products and now holds a similar position with Netflix.

Mike DuHaime, a Republican strategist and public affairs executive, is a managing director at Mercury Public Affairs, LLC, a national public affairs firm. He was the chief strategist for the successful campaign of former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie for Governor of New Jersey in 2009. Christie unseated the incumbent, Democrat Jon Corzine, by nearly 87,000 votes. He served as one of ten members of Gov. Christie's transition team and was the chairman of the authorities subcommittee.

Jill Greenberg is an American photographer and Pop artist. She is known for her portraits and fine art work that often features anthropomorphized animals that have been digitally manipulated with painterly effects. Her photography of animals is regarded for its capability to show a wide range of expressions and feelings that are comparable to that of a seasoned actor or actress. Some of the primates she has captured on film are actually celebrates in their own right, having been featured in different TV shows or movies. She is also highly recognized for her distinct, and stylized photography of celebrities including well known performers such as Gwen Stefani, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Clint Eastwood. She is also known for inserting her own strong opinions into her work. In reference to her work Greenberg states "They're portraits and they're personal but there's a little twist going on. An edge."

On February 21, 2008, in the midst of John McCain's campaign in the 2008 Republican Party presidential primaries, both The New York Times and the Washington Post published articles detailing rumors of an improper relationship between John McCain and lobbyist Vicki Iseman.

Tucker Bounds is a public relations professional, who has been active in Republican politics. He served as a spokesperson for the McCain 2008 presidential campaign. Bounds also served as the Deputy Campaign Manager, Communications, for former eBay CEO Meg Whitman's 2010 gubernatorial campaign in California. He previously worked for Facebook, in Menlo Park, California, for its policy communication team. He is also the co-founder of Sidewire, a political news analysis platform.

Tucker Eskew

Tucker Eskew is a political and communications strategist in the United States who served as Deputy Assistant to the President for Media Affairs and Global Communications under President George W. Bush. He joined Senator John McCain's presidential campaign in August 2008 as senior advisor and counselor to Sarah Palin. He was the founder of Eskew Strategy Group, an Alexandria-based communications firm. In 2005, he merged the Eskew Group into a new bipartisan communications firm called Vianovo.

On November 1, 2008, American vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin fell victim to a prank call by the Masked Avengers, a Quebecer radio comedy duo, who tricked Palin into believing she was talking to French President Nicolas Sarkozy. During the conversation, the fake Sarkozy, speaking in English, talked to Palin about foreign policy, hunting, and the 2008 U.S. presidential election. After it was revealed to Palin that the call was a prank, she handed the phone to one of her assistants who told the comedy duo "I will find you" and hung up.

Christopher Lyon is a political consultant who has worked for Republican party candidates in Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, South Carolina, Florida, Arizona, California, Minnesota, North Carolina, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and on the national level.

Hamby has been described as an early adopter among political journalists of social media. Hamby won an Emmy Award in 2012 for his role in CNN's Election Coverage and an Edward R. Murrow Award for his political coverage on Snapchat.

Stu Loeser is a Democratic communications strategist. He served as the Press Secretary to the former Mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg and was the longest-tenured Press Secretary in the history of New York City.

Kelly Riddell Sadler is a former American political staffer and a former journalist and columnist. She wrote "Water Cooler", a daily political blog for The Washington Times website, and was a regular contributor to the Times on political issues. She served as a special assistant to the president in the White House Office of Communications from May 2017 to June 2018.
