The Japan national rugby league team, nicknamed the Samurais, represents Japan in rugby league football. Japan have played some international competition since 1994. The Japanese National Cup, the JRL domestic club competition, was founded in 1998. In 2021 the season was restarted after a break for COVID with five teams in two divisions, three clubs in East Japan, the Abiko Ducks, Mitaka Spartans and South Ikebukuro Rabbitohs; and two clubs in West Japan, the Kamisenryu Sea Turtles and The Kansai Kaminari.

He later coached English club Leeds for two seasons. He is a member of the famous Bell rugby league family that includes George, Ian, Cameron, Glenn, Cathy Bell and Clayton Friend.
Viliamu "Willie" Talau is a former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. A Samoa and New Zealand international representative centre, he played in the National Rugby League (NRL) for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, and in the Super League for St Helens, with whom he won the 2006 Super League Grand Final and the Challenge Cup on four occasions, and for the Salford City Reds.
Robert "Bertie" Campbell is a former Russia international rugby league footballer. A utility player, he was a hooker at school, but played professionally as a prop. Campbell played for Brisbane's Western Suburbs Panthers before signing for Sydney's Western Suburbs Magpies. He later played for Illawarra Steelers and the Gold Coast Chargers.
Chris Joynt is a former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. He played representative level rugby union (RU) for Borders, and at club level for Kelso RFC, and representative level rugby league (RL) for Great Britain and England, and at club level for Wigan, winning the Man of Steel Award in 1980, and Hull Kingston Rovers, as a goal-kicking fullback, and coached at representative level rugby league for Scotland, and at club level Wigan, Hull Kingston Rovers, and Huddersfield.
Graeme Leonard West is a New Zealand former rugby league footballer and coach. Standing at six-foot, five inches, he played in the forwards, captaining English club Wigan Warriors. West also played representative rugby league for New Zealand and is the father of Super League player, Dwayne West.
Richard Huddart was an English professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. A Great Britain and England international representative forward, he played at club level in England for Whitehaven and St Helens, and in Australia for St. George. Huddart was both a Whitehaven and St Helens R.F.C. Hall of Fame inductee.
Michael Sullivan, also known by the nickname of "Sully", was an English World Cup winning professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1950s and 1960s, and coached in the 1970s. He set the record for the most appearances for the Great Britain Lions with 46. This record has been matched but never overtaken. He also holds the record for the most rugby league test match tries by a player of any nationality with 44.
Jack Lindwall (1918-2000) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s and 1940s. A prolific try-scoring three-quarter back, he played his entire New South Wales Rugby Football League career with the St. George club. He is also the older brother of Australian Cricket Hall of Fame inaugural inductee and fellow rugby league player, Ray Lindwall.
