Johnny Marines is an American music executive from New York City.

Biography

Marines is of Dominican descent, and grew up in the Lower East Side of New York City. He attended Seward Park Campus and John Jay College School of Criminal Justice. He worked as a police officer in the New York City Police Department from 1993 to 2009, retiring at the rank of sergeant. [1] [2]

Music career

Marines first met Romeo Santos, lead singer/songwriter and co-producer of Aventura, in 2002 and initially performed security functions for the group. In 2003 Johnny became the group's manager. Under Marines' management, Aventura earned a Latin Grammy Award (2007), several Premio Lo Nuestro awards, Latin Billboard Music Awards, Premio Juventud awards, and an MTV Video Music Award for Latin Artist of the Year.

Romeo Santos began his solo career in 2011 with Marines as manager. Santos released the album Formula, Vol. 1 that year. The album went multi-platinum, had five hit singles, and won several awards. Santos released his second album, Formula, Vol. 2 in 2014, which was similarly acclaimed. Santos conducted multiple tours throughout this period, and played venues including Madison Square Garden and Yankee Stadium. In 2017, Santos' third solo album, Golden was released.

From June 2016 until July 2017, Johnny was the President of Roc Nation Latin, a newly formed division within the company.

Philanthropy

In conjunction with Aventura and Romeo Santos, Marines co-funded toy drives in New York and the Dominican Republic and donated turkeys to low-income families during the holidays. [3]

Awards and recognition

Marines was invited to be a guest speaker at Harvard's youth event the Latino Leadership Initiative, in 2011, 2012, and 2013. [4] He has also spoken at Columbia University, Lehman College, and Syracuse University. In 2012, Marines was interviewed to be a part of the "Famosos" section of About.com's celebrity section. [5]

In August 2015, he was named a "Top Latin Player" by Billboard in August 2015 for managing Romeo Santos [6]

With the lineup always consisting of the members Romeo Santos, Henry Santos, Lenny Santos, and Max Santos, they are regarded as one of the most influential Latin groups of all time. All of the members are of Dominican descent, although Romeo is also half Puerto Rican on his mother's side. They were the first major bachata act to have originated in the United States instead of the Dominican Republic. The group was integral to the evolution of bachata music and are the pioneers of the modern bachata sound.

We Broke the Rules is the second studio album by the American band Aventura, released on July 2, 2002, by Premium Latin music. On the album, Aventura incorporated elements of pop, hip hop, and R&B into bachata, giving what critics thought was a new flavor to the genre and extending its appeal to those who preferred urban music styles. The album introduces to the mainstream a new style of bachata known as "the New York school", or "urban bachata", characterized by the inclusion of electric guitars instead of acoustic, and lyrics in Spanish and English instead of just Spanish. In addition, the singing style takes after R&B melodies. The album's themes mainly included heartbreak and melancholy, although it also included social themes like in "Amor de Madre", or "Mother's Love", which is a song describing the lifelong struggle of a prostitute and her son.

Anthony "Romeo" Santos is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer who is best known as the frontman and lead vocalist of the bachata group Aventura. In 2002, the song "Obsesión" was number one in Italy for 16 consecutive weeks. He released several albums with Aventura before the group broke up. Since then, Santos has embarked on a solo career which has created seven number one songs on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs chart and seventeen number ones on the Tropical Airplay chart. Romeo Santos has sold over 24 million copies making him one of the best-selling Latin artists.

The record contains fifteen tracks, most of which were composed by Santos and co-produced with Ivan Chevere. The album experiments with the sound of bachata and other genres including R&B and flamenco. It features several Anglophone and Hispanophone guest artists including Usher, Tomatito, Mario Domm, and Lil Wayne. Recording for the album took place in 2011 at The Castle, Fight Klub, and EMG Studios in New York City. A deluxe edition of the album containing five extra tracks was released exclusively in Walmart retail stores in the United States.

Musically, the album features musical arrangements combining bachata and R&B.

The Lo Nuestro Award for Artist of the Year is an honor presented annually by American network Univision. The Lo Nuestro Awards were first awarded since 1989 and was established to recognize the most talented performers of Latin music. The nominees and winners were originally selected by a voting poll conducted among program directors of Spanish-language radio stations in the United States and also based on chart performance on Billboard Latin music charts, with the results being tabulated and certified by the accounting firm Deloitte. At the present time, the winners are selected by the audience through an online survey. The trophy awarded is shaped in the form of a treble clef.

Aventura Reunion In NYC was a month-long residence by music group Aventura that took place at United Palace in New York City. The concerts started on February 4, 2016, and ended on February 28, 2016. The concerts serverd as a reunon for the band following their break up on 2011 to pursue the individual musical careers. Initually only 4 shows were announced, however more shows were announced due the high demand.
