Joseph C. Szabo (born December 26,1957) is a former government official who was the twelfth Federal Railroad Administrator of the United States. Nominated by President Barack Obama on March 20,2009,he was confirmed by the United States Senate on April 29,2009. Safety was the top priority of his administration. He stepped down from the position on January 9,2015 and Sarah Feinberg became the Acting Administrator on January 12,2015,and subsequently the permanent Administrator. [1]
Szabo was born into a longtime railroad family. He started his own railroading career in 1976 with the Illinois Central Railroad,where he worked in numerous positions,including as a yard switchman,road trainman,and commuter conductor. He served as the United Transportation Union's State Legislative Director from 1996 to 2009. [2] [3]
Szabo served more than 20 years in municipal government. He began his public service as a zoning commission member in his native south suburban Riverdale,Illinois,where he later served as a park district commissioner,village trustee,and ultimately mayor. He also was a member of the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association executive board and transportation committee and the regional Council of Mayors executive committee. Other prior service included membership on the Executive Council of Chicago Metropolis 2020 (later known as Metropolis Strategies),the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus,and the Legislative Committee of the Chicago Metropolitan Planning Council. Szabo joined the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) as a Senior Fellow in January 2015 and was named Executive Director in June 2015. [5] [6] CMAP serves as the seven-county region’s official comprehensive planning organization. Adopted in October 2010,its GO TO 2040 plan is helping the 284 communities of northeastern Illinois to implement strategies that address transportation,housing,economic development,open space,the environment,and other quality-of-life issues. The agency's ON TO 2050 comprehensive plan was adopted on October 10,2018. [7] Szabo announced his retirement from CMAP on February 15,2019. [8]
Szabo earned the Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Governors State University and received an honorary doctorate from Lewis University for his lifetime commitment to public service. In March 2015,Amtrak honored him by renaming its key operations facility at Chicago's Union Station as the "Joseph C. Szabo Chicago Control Center," which dispatches 580 trains and 120,000 passengers daily. [9]

The Sunset Limited is a long-distance passenger train operated by Amtrak on a 1,995-mile (3,211 km) route between New Orleans,Louisiana,and Los Angeles,California,with major stops in Houston,San Antonio,El Paso,and Tucson. Introduced in 1894 by the Southern Pacific Railroad,it is the oldest continuously operating named train in the United States.

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is an agency in the United States Department of Transportation (DOT). The agency was created by the Department of Transportation Act of 1966. The purpose of the FRA is to promulgate and enforce rail safety regulations,administer railroad assistance programs,conduct research and development in support of improved railroad safety and national rail transportation policy,provide for the rehabilitation of Northeast Corridor rail passenger service,and consolidate government support of rail transportation activities.

The SouthEast Service is a proposed commuter rail line to be operated by Metra,the commuter railroad service for the Chicago metropolitan area. The route of the proposed line would use tracks owned by CSX Transportation and the Union Pacific Railroad.
Amfleet is a fleet of single-level intercity railroad passenger cars built by the Budd Company for American company Amtrak in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Budd based the Amfleet design on its earlier Metroliner electric multiple unit. An initial order for 57 cars in 1973 to supplement the Metroliners on the Northeast Corridor grew to two orders totaling 642 cars,sufficient to reequip all the services on the Northeast Corridor and many other routes around the United States. The first 492 cars,known as Amfleet I and completed between 1975 and 1977,were designed for short-distance service. A second order of 150 cars,known as Amfleet II and completed between 1980 and 1983,were designed for long-distance service. They were the last intercity passenger cars built by Budd.
Plans for high-speed rail in the United States date back to the High-Speed Ground Transportation Act of 1965. Various state and federal proposals have followed. Despite being one of the world's first countries to get high-speed trains,it failed to spread. Definitions of what constitutes high-speed rail vary,including a range of speeds over 110 mph (180 km/h) and dedicated rail lines. Inter-city rail with top speeds between 90 and 125 mph is sometimes referred to in the United States as higher-speed rail.
The Illiana Expressway,also known as the Illiana Corridor,was a controversial proposed toll road in northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana. Formal environmental impact statement studies were begun in April 2011 and were led jointly by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). It was planned as being approximately 50 miles (80 km) in length,mostly in Illinois,connecting Interstate 55 (I-55) in Illinois to I-65 in Indiana. The freeway was scheduled to open in 2018. However,construction plans were shelved in 2015 when Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner issued an executive order delaying the construction of new highways in the state.
The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is a metropolitan planning organization (MPO) responsible for comprehensive regional transportation planning in Cook,DuPage,Kane,Kendall,Lake,McHenry and Will counties in northeastern Illinois. The agency developed and now guides implementation of ON TO 2050,a new long-range plan to help the seven counties and 284 communities of northeastern Illinois implement strategies that address transportation,housing,economic development,open space,the environment,and other quality-of-life issues.
The Port of Chicago consists of several major port facilities within the city of Chicago,Illinois,operated by the Illinois International Port District. It is a multimodal facility featuring Senator Dan Dougherty Harbor,the Iroquois Landing Lakefront Terminus,and Harborside International Golf Center. The central element of the Port District,Calumet Harbor,is maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Illinois High Speed Rail refers to a set of planned high speed rail lines connecting Chicago Union Station to various parts of the state and beyond. Two lines already offer increased speeds.
The Quad Cities is a planned Amtrak Illinois Service intercity passenger train that will operate between Chicago and Moline in the US state of Illinois. The train will duplicate the route and stations of the Carl Sandburg and Illinois Zephyr between Chicago and Wyanet using track owned by BNSF. On the Wyanet–Moline segment,which will include a station at Geneseo,the train will use track owned by Iowa Interstate Railroad.
Pedestrian railroad safety is concerned with the protection of life through regulation,management and technology development of all forms of rail transportation. In the United States there are some 180,000 miles of track. Pedestrian railroad accidents are the leading cause of death on railways. More than 7,200 pedestrians have been killed by trains in the United States since 1997.
Sarah Elizabeth Feinberg is an American civic employee who previously served as the Interim President of the New York City Transit Authority from 2020 to 2021,and a former Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration. She was nominated for the role of MTA Chairperson but was ultimately not selected for the position. Her background is mostly in communications.
