Michael Jude Pate (born 1964 or 1965) is an American lawyer who serves as a justice of the Alaska Supreme Court. He previously served as a judge of the Sitka Superior Court from 2018 to 2023.
Pate was born in Nuremberg,Germany while his father was stationed in the U.S. Army,he spent his childhood primarily in the Netherlands and Kansas. [3] He attended AFCENT High School in the Netherlands. [4] He received a Bachelor of Science in journalism from the University of Kansas and a Juris Doctor from Lewis &Clark Law School. [3] [4]
From 1994 to 1999,Pate served as trial counsel for the Sitka Tribe of Alaska. From 1999 to 2006,he was in private practice and from 2006 to 2018 he was an assistant public defender. [3] In February 2018,Governor Bill Walker appointed Pate as a judge of the Sitka superior court, [5] to replace retiring Judge David George. He was sworn in on June 1,2018. [6]
Pate was one of seven candidates who applied for the upcoming vacancy. [7] On January 20,2023,Governor Mike Dunleavy announced the appointment of Pate to the Alaska Supreme Court to fill the upcoming vacancy made by the mandatory retirement of Chief Justice Daniel Winfree. [8] With his appointment,Pate is the first justice to come from someplace other than Juneau,Anchorage or Fairbanks since 1960. [9] He assumed office in March 2023. [10]
Since 2010,Pate has coached the Sitka High School mock trials,been a member of the Judicial Conference Planning Committee since 2020 and a member of the Fairness,Diversity,and Equality Committee since 2018. [4] [11]

Craig F. Stowers was an American lawyer and jurist who served as an associate justice,and the 18th chief justice,of the Alaska Supreme Court. He was appointed by Governor Sean Parnell in 2009 as an associate justice to replace retiring Justice Robert Eastaugh. Stowers was one of seven candidates recommended to the Governor by the Alaska Judicial Council out of a record 25 applicants.

He was a judge of the Alaska Court of Appeals from October 2008 until his appointment to the high court. Prior to that,he worked as a lawyer throughout Alaska since arriving there in the late 1970s. He also served as a state trial court judge in Kodiak and Valdez. On November 30,2020,Bolger announced his plans to retire effective June 30,2021.

He defeated former U.S. senator Mark Begich in the 2018 gubernatorial election after incumbent governor Bill Walker dropped out of the race. He was reelected in 2022.

Incumbent Independent governor Bill Walker was seeking re-election in what was originally a three-way race between Walker,Republican former Alaska state senator Mike Dunleavy,and Democratic former Alaska U.S. Senator Mark Begich. Despite Walker dropping out on October 19,2018 and endorsing Begich,Dunleavy won in what was the only gubernatorial gain by a Republican candidate in 2018. As of 2024,this was the last time the Governor’s office in Alaska changed partisan control. Walker later unsuccessfully ran for Governor of Alaska in 2022.
