The Fort Walton Mound (8OK6) is an archaeological site located in present-day Fort Walton Beach,Florida,United States. The large platform mound was built about 850 CE by the Pensacola culture,a local form of the Mississippian culture. Because of its significance,the mound was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964.
The Hickory Ridge Cemetery Archeological Site (8ES1280) is an archaeological site in Pensacola,Escambia County Florida. It is located north of Big Lagoon and west of Pensacola. During excavations in the 1980s carbon dating was done on burnt wood fragments associated with burials in the mound,with a determination that the site had been used c. 1450. Analysis of ceramics suggested it was a Mississippian culture site,probably from the Late Bottle Creek Phase or Early Bear Point Phases of the Pensacola culture. It was a cemetery associated with a village nearby,(8ES1052). On September 22,2000,it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
The Old Christ Church,also known as Christ Church,built in 1832 in Pensacola,Florida is a historic Episcopal church building. It is one of the oldest surviving church buildings in Florida. On May 3,1974,it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Martha Dunagin Saunders is an American professor and academic official. A native of Mississippi,she earned her Bachelor of Arts in French from the University of Southern Mississippi;her Master of Arts in journalism from the University of Georgia;and her Doctor of Philosophy in communication theory and research from Florida State University. Saunders has served as the chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and the ninth president of the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) where she replaced embattled president Shelby F. Thames. She is currently serving as president of the University of West Florida in Pensacola,Florida.
George Robert Fischer was an American underwater archaeologist,considered the founding father of the field in the National Park Service. A native Californian,he did undergraduate and graduate work at Stanford University,and began his career with the National Park Service in 1959,which included assignments in six parks,the Washington,D.C. Office,and the Southeast Archaeological Center from which he retired in 1988. He began teaching courses in underwater archaeology at Florida State University in 1974 and co-instructed inter-disciplinary courses in scientific diving techniques. After retirement from the NPS his FSU activities were expanded and his assistance helped shape the university's program in underwater archaeology.

They spoke a Muskogean language. They are the source of the name of Pensacola Bay and the city of Pensacola. The Pensacola culture was a regional variation of the Mississippian culture along the Gulf Coast of the United States that lasted from 1100 to 1700 CE. The archaeological culture covers an area stretching from a transitional Pensacola/Fort Walton culture zone at Choctawhatchee Bay in Florida to the eastern side of the Mississippi River Delta near Biloxi,Mississippi,with the majority of its sites located along Mobile Bay in the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta. Sites for the culture stretched inland,north into the southern Tombigee and Alabama River valleys,as far as the vicinity of Selma,Alabama.
Richard Deo Daugherty was an American archaeologist and professor,who led the excavation of the Ozette Indian Village Archeological Site in Washington state during the 1970s. The Ozette Indian Village,which was buried and preserved in a mudslide in the 1700s,has been called "the most significant archaeological dig of the 20th century" in the Pacific Northwest. Daugherty collaborated closely with the Makah during the dig,which uncovered more than 55,000 artifacts.

Janet Friedman (1945–2002) was an American archaeologist who made major contributions to cultural resource management. She was also an early contributor to the development of wet site archaeology. As head archaeologist for the United States Forest Service (USFS) and later as Federal Preservation Officer for the Department of Agriculture (USDA) and member of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP),Friedman was actively involved in developing the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 (ARPA) from its naissance. She was a member of the Society for American Archaeology (SAA),the Women's Council on Energy and the Environment,and the Mid-Atlantic Archaeological Conference and,as one of the first female students in Washington State University's (WSU) Anthropology doctoral program,she actively mentored women in cultural and environmental sciences throughout her career,promoting gender equality in the field.
Bennie Carlton Keel is an American archaeologist who has made contributions to the foundational understanding of Cherokee archaeology and culture,North Carolina archaeology,and to the development of Americanist cultural resource management (CRM).
